“ Ours is a culture of engagement, not observation.
We’re not sitting on the sidelines here. Research
shows that students learn best when pursuing
answers to questions they truly hold. By helping
students see that learning is about inquiry, we
counteract the broader view that learning is about
memorization. The gift of The White Mountain
School is a culture of inquiry and engagement.”
TIM BREEN, PH.D | HEAD OF SCHOOL
We are a school of inquiry and
engagement.
Grounded in our Episcopal heritage,
we prepare and inspire students to
lead lives of curiosity, courage and compassion.

White Mountain students are curious! A full range of courses,
from entry level to honors and from the AP program to a dynamic
list of elective offerings, ensures that student interests are well-
served. The LASR Program provides opportunities for every
student to conduct major inquiry-driven work around a personal
interest or question. Additionally, every student explores the
world beyond campus through our Field Course Program that
asks, “Where can we best teach that topic?”
“ Most of my courses are
discussion-based. There is always
an opportunity to talk about our
specific interests. I love that our
school makes time for that.”

CLUBS
At The White Mountain School everyone matters.
Everyone. We value our close-knit community. In
his book, The Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell
explores the importance of community size by
demonstrating that the relationships between
people are stronger and more genuine in
communities under 150. Because of our size,
students and teachers forge deep relationships
that last a lifetime.

“Everyone at WMS is so welcoming.” As a 9th grader Ericia led a step dance activity
during an all-school diversity program. Students and teachers loved her workshop,
and that’s when Ericia co-founded the Step Club— now one of the most popular clubs
on campus. She says, “With all the support of the faculty and students, I wasn’t scared
to start a new club. You can add your talents to the community without worrying
about being new. Everyone here is willing to try new things.”

White Mountain students learn to engage in our culture of authentic
inquiry from day one. The LASR Program is our way of celebrating
true passion by helping each student explore his or her interests
deeply. It stands for Leadership, Arts, Service, and Research, the
four catalysts for student project ideas. LASR is emblematic of our
School’s dedication to authentic inquiry. It draws on the best current
research in teaching and learning. Our dedicated faculty and staff
know how to encourage students to ask questions related to the
topics in life that intrigue them.

“My goal is to be able to send out a kit that has everything you need to build
a vegetable growing machine.”

yEngagement in the LASR Program encourages
students to think about learning in a non-traditional
way. Instead of researching an assigned topic,
students pursue the questions that flow from their
own interests and passions. Research on college
success is clear: successful students ask great
questions, know how to find and use resources,
deal effectively with ambiguity, manage their time
well, and communicate clearly. LASR projects focus
squarely on these skills.
“ I want children with disabilities to
experience the liberation of movement.
I created a dance class for local

Is the classroom the only place to learn? We don’t think so.
White Mountain students immerse themselves in a week-
long, off-campus Field Course each semester. These unique
experiences allow for in-depth, academic exploration in an
authentic setting. Each Field Course provides an incomparable
opportunity for students to explore and develop interests
beyond the walls of the traditional classroom.

JERRY | SHANGHAI, CHINA
“Be ready for adventure.” This is Jerry’s motto.
He seeks adventure at WMS, and he has an uncanny
ability for capturing it on film. The photos on this
page are from Jerry’s collection of over 1,000 images
from the Natural History of the Mojave Desert Field
Course. Field Course offers time and space for Jerry to
learn about his surroundings in his own way, through
photography. In his time at White Mountain, Jerry has
studied in Arizona, California and right here in our own
backyard on Mount Washington.

RECENT FIELD COURSES
The White Mountain School is a long-time leader of the green schools
movement. As the first high school in the country to have a dedicated
Sustainability Studies department, we believe it is important that students
learn not just about the theory of sustainability but also how to take action
within their own lives and the community in which they live.

“I’ve learned that everything in my life is related to sustainability.”
Kyra’s busy schedule includes taking a challenging course load,
participating in the rock climbing program, and anything and everything
that has to do with sustainability. “Right now in Sustainability Club we’re
building prototypes of solar-powered lighting systems based on what we
learned on the Field Course in Nicaragua. These lights can be installed
right into the tin roofs of the homes we visited. They will bring light to
villages that have no access to electricity.”
“ My White Mountain education has pushed
me to see how interrelated everything
is, and my courses have deepened my
understanding of the world.”

White Mountain students make meaningful
contributions to our school community and the
broader world. From Morning Meeting to Family Style
Dinner to Light Blue-Dark Blue Team competitions
to Community Service Day, there is a great spirit
of togetherness here. We understand the value of
service to others. A service-related activity is offered
each week. You can also join an international service
trip, become trained as an adaptive sports coach in
snow sports or swimming, or volunteer after school
at the Boys and Girls Club, to name a few. Above all
else, The White Mountain School is a community of
compassionate people.
