MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Settlers Family
It is indeed hard to believe that another academic year has ended. Time has
passed so quickly. It has been an exciting year built on many successes,
peppered with a few challenges, but nevertheless a year of positive growth.
By now you have received the final end of year report. We are particularly
proud of our overall 2016 end of year results and have the best pass rate
recorded in the recent history of the school. A notable achievement has
been a 100% pass rate in grade 11.
Once again this term has been characterised by an endless array of activities, events and achievements, a core
part of the schools ethos and success. A few memorable highlights include Senior and Junior Prize Giving
where we had the opportunity as a school to acknowledge our academic, sporting, cultural and pastoral
successes. We bid a bittersweet farewell to the Matric Class of 2016 and wished them well as they tackled
and completed the NSC examinations. We now anxiously await the release of the 2016 NSC results on
5 January 2017. A new set of learner leadership was announced from various leadership bodies within the
school. Congratulations young leaders, we look forward to your tenureship. Remembrance Day, the grades
8, 9 and 11 socials, the final end of year examination, the Christmas and Variety Concerts, Interhouse sport –
all contributed to a busy, exciting and sometimes stressful fourth term. We held our inaugural Summer Market
on 26 November 2016. Well done Fundraising Committee and thank you for all the hard work. Thank you
to all the families who supported the event through donations and/or feet through the gate. I have however
made a mental note that has to be actioned in the forthcoming years, that our parental support is not what it
should be. I want to encourage and invite all The Settlers families to become involved in future events.
Social responsibility was once again the pillar that received much focus this term. The season of giving started
with the grade 12’s donating their school shoes on the last day of the NSC exam, the non-perishable food
collection from the Christmas Variety Concert, our annual collection of grocery items for our amenities staff
and the generous donations towards the retirement gifts for “Mama”, Lindelwa Mruwetyana. Thank you
Settlers families for your generosity.
I wish to thank each staff member (teaching staff, administrative staff and amenities staff) for the hard work and
commitment evident throughout the year and not only this term. We are grateful and appreciate all they offer
to the learners of TSHS.
Take care and have a safe holiday and a blessed festive season!

prepare their vision and mission for 2017. They then presented their theme “Settlers Blueprint” for 2017
to the school at their first prefect’s assembly. They really are a powerhouse of leaders and have many exciting
plans for 2017. Hlonelwa Lutuli was also selected as one of 50 learner leaders from across the Western and
Eastern Cape to attend the Burger Youth Leadership camp.
The RCL voting and announcement of the group for grade 9 to 12 has also been completed. We will complete
the process with Grade 8 voting early in 2017. Tafadzwa Makosa is the chairperson, Kaylin Leo the vice
chairperson, Erin Jackson the secretary and Mihlali Bence the treasurer.

GRADE 9
HAIR WORKSHOP
At the end of term 3 we workshopped the hair rules with all grades and on Saturday 29 October we had a
very successful and insightful parent workshop on hair rules and the code of conduct. It was a meaningful
opportunity to interact with the parent body regarding their expectations and views on this matter. We
will continue engaging with the various role players in 2017 and hope to have a workable solution in the
near future. The current status regarding hair rules is maintaining the status quo while we review the rules.
NOVEMBER EXAMINATIONS
The November examinations went well and absenteeism during this time, even on non-writers days was at
a minimum. For most of the learners their end of year report brings much joy and relief that their worst
fears have not been realized. Mrs Abrahamse and Mrs de Vries are available for any learner or parent who
requires assistance during the post exam period.
Our role as parents is to support our children and we need to see situations where we can assist our
children to deal with disappointments as opportunities to teach them this vital life skill. We are all assured
of having to deal with disappointments at some stage in our lives and how we deal with these often turn
out to be defining moments in our lives.
LATE ARRIVALS
Late arrival for school remains a very big problem and we appeal to parents to use this holiday to make
transport arrangements that will ensure punctuality, as it is a basic requirement for any successful
employment in the future of your child.
2017
The focus will be on general appearance of learners and back to basics with zero tolerance for defaulters.
Please refer to the code of conduct including uniform (particularly dress length, hair and bag regulations)
on the school website or in your child’s homework diary to ensure that all requirements are met from the
first school day of 2017. Parents are also reminded that if a girl wishes to have braids it must be the same
colour as the roots of her hair.
2016 has been a busy yet successful year for the pastoral management committee. We wish to thank all
those parents and learners who have supported the school in its efforts to maintain standards and nurture
values that are so important to the development of well-adjusted and positive young adults. We look
forward to your continued support in 2017.

CULTURE (Mr Smuts)
The fourth term has been a term full of auditions and preparation for 2017.
The new chairpersons for the more than 40 different societies have been announced and they are hard at work
to ensure a successful season. The Chairpersons attended a seminar to prepare them for this task.
The casts for next year’s Musical Extravaganza and the One Act Plays have been chosen and these learners will
start rehearsals early in January.
INTERACT
Interact keeps social awareness alive in our school with continuous projects, which gives learners the
opportunity to show they care. Our matric learners contributed by donating their school shoes as they
completed their final exam. Another major project this term was the special hampers for all amenities staff
members. We thank the school for their generous contributions.
GRADE 12 ART EXHIBITION
The Visual Art and Music learners displayed their work at the Grade 12 Art Exhibition and Music moderation
concert. We congratulate our Grade 12’s on the fantastic work displayed.

END OF YEAR CONCERT
The final cultural event was the spectacular End of Year concert. Many learners took this opportunity to
audition and to ensure that new talent will be discovered. Congratulations to all the performers on a fantastic
show.
CHRISTMAS VARIETY CONCERT
The Cultural season ended with the Christmas Variety Concert. Parents and visitors could join in this special
programme which included performances by the choir, orchestra, jazz band, soloists and drama group. Part of
the concert was the collection of non-perishable food items. A large amount of items were collected and all
these items were delivered to the Bellville Night Shelter.
2016 was a most successful Cultural season and this could not have happened without the hard work and
dedication of the learners, teachers and parents. All Settlers learners have the opportunity to excel outside of
the classroom. We wish all our learners, staff and parents a well-deserved break to get ready for an even
better and busier cultural season in 2017!

JUNIOR AND SENIOR PRIZE GIVING
These two very prestigious ceremonies were aimed at recognising the Academic, Sport and Cultural achievers
of the school, as well as those who have shown great endeavours throughout the year. Both guest speakers
related well to the learners and had a fine message for the young adults. At the Senior Prize Giving the learner
leaders reported back to the school with regards to the achievements in the 4 pillars, namely the Academic,
Sport, Culture and Pastoral spheres, whilst at Junior Prize Giving Grade specific reports were delivered by
representatives of the grade. Outstanding reports were delivered by all the learners.

VALEDICTORY
The school bid farewell to the Class of 2016 in a very moving ceremony attended by both the learners and
their parents. Farewell speeches were delivered by the Head Boy and Head Girl who moved many to tears.

TEACHERS DAY
All teachers were spoilt by their classes or their grade on Teachers day. As this day was celebrated in the
holidays, we decided to acknowledge the wonderful work of the teaching staff at a later stage. Each staff
member felt very spoilt.
NTA – National Teachers Awards 2016
We are very proud of Mrs Abrahamse as she was awarded the runner up position
in the category of Excellence in Secondary School Teaching at the Regional

– congratulation!
STAFF END OF YEAR FUNCTION
A lovely lunch was attended by all the staff at an
outdoor venue. The staff managed to relax whilst
enjoying a good lunch and fine collegiality.
CHILDRENS CHRISTMAS PARTY
A group of Prefects dressed up as Christmas elves
and entertained the staff children at the Annual
Christmas Party. Games like musical chairs and
statues was played until father Santa arrived with his sack of gifts. The children
all had a chance to sit on Santa’s lap to receive their gift. Lots of eating, running
around and playing with their presents led to a very successful party.
FAREWELLS
At the end of this year we will say farewell to a number of
Academic and Administrative staff. We have had the privilege
of having 3 interns for the past six months. Caryn, Stanley and
Jermaine have been very helpful in assisting wherever they
could. We trust that they learnt many new skills that they will
put to good use in their future careers.
We also would like to thank Ms Osman (Economics), Mrs
van Schoor (Mathematics), Mr Davids (Economics) and Mrs
Goeiman (Geography) for assisting us this past term in the
various departments. Mr Ortell has ably assisted the
Afrikaans department for two terms and for this we thank

as she gets married in December and starts teaching at Protea

photocopying l is also leaving to take up a new position. We thank
her for all she has contributed to The Settlers this past year and
wish her well.

Opportunities for All
We also say a sad farewell to four longstanding
teachers at The Settlers High school. Mrs Toerien
(Physical Science), Mr Page (Economics), Miss
Rangolie (Technology) and Mrs Ingpen (English). All
have made enormous contributions in their various
areas of expertise whilst at The Settlers High. A
special farewell assembly was held for them where
each was bade farewell to by learners at the school.
We wish all of them all the very best as they take
up new positions at various school in Cape Town.
Gifts were given and speeches made to them as
part of a special lunch held in their honour.
RETIREMENT
The school also celebrated Mrs
Lindelwa Mruwetyana on reaching
retirement age after 14 ½ years at
The Settlers High as a member of the
Maintenance Team. ‘Mama” as she is
fondly known, has been a stalwart in
keeping the bathrooms at the school
ship shape daily, always going about
her tasks with a spring in her step and a smile on her face. She always referred
to the bathrooms as her ‘offices’ and took great pride in keeping them clean.
She also knows the names of many of the children and could often be heard
offering sound advice to learners in trouble. A special Retirement lunch was
held in her honour and attended by some of her family members and past staff.
As a token of how much she is loved the learners collected enough money per
grade to buy her some much needed kitchen appliances. Mama, we thank you
for your years of service and wish you much good health and happiness for
your retirement. Enjoy the rest after many years of service.
THANK YOU
To the Contact Manco staff, Mrs Theunissen, Mrs Less, Mrs Adams, Mrs Janse van Rensburg and Mrs van der
Merwe (co-opted) - thank you so much for your help throughout this very busy term, it is much appreciated.
A big thank you to the Waitrons Unlimited Society for all their help at many of the functions.
To the parents, thank you for your continued support at our functions and sports matches and for transporting
your children to and from activities. Both the learners and teachers appreciate the interest you show. We
wish you Seasons Greetings, may you and your families have a wonderful festive season. Stay Safe!

FOR THOSE I HAVE TAUGHT
Written by Mrs Chantelle Ingpen (with apologies to Shakespeare)
When you think that, next year, I might miss you;
might miss your constant talking while I teach
ev'ry day of the week, tantamount to
a freak who becomes the teach who must preach.
Then think again, Settlers, for I will not -
miss your sunny smiles or your lazy laughs
at my rendition of the Bard, a lot.
No more than you'll miss my sarcastic barbs,
or futile rants about common errors,
about informal style and tone of voice.
No, you won't miss all the grammar terrors
or poetic rhymes that were not your choice.
But I will miss, oh, more than just a bit,
how each one of you has a special wit.
FOR THE SETTLERS
Written by Mrs Chantelle Ingpen (with apologies this time to Elizabeth Barret Browning)
How will I miss you? Let me count the ways:
I will miss your unquenchable spirit,
your unexpected hugs on the bad days,
and your laughs at jokes that are a near hit.
I’ll mostly miss the times I could just ask
and there would be an eager one or two
who’d take the opportunity or task
to spin that special Settlers charm, and you
would win the prize, just because it’s a fact
that nowhere else on earth is there a school
with talent, wit and soul more jam-packed
than this one, which, with ev’ry molecule
I will miss in ways that I cannot count -
just know - it will be a mighty amount.
