The Reactivity of Metals
Today’s Objectives
By the end of this lesson, you will:
see that a metal will displace a less reactive metal from a solution of one of its salts
remember the reactivity series
be able to work out the products of displacement reactions to write word equations
The Reactivity of Metals
Reactivity – a measure of how readily and violently a substance will react with another substance
Grrrunt!!!Please Potassium
Stop Sodium
Calling Calcium
My Magnesium
Zebra Zinc
In Iron
Class, Copper
She Silver
Grunts! Gold
To help us remember…
The Reactivity of Metals
Displacement – when a more reactive metal takes the place of another one in a compound
The Reactivity of Metals
Angelina is more reactive than Jennifer….
…so Angelina displaces Jennifer and wins Brad!
The Reactivity of MetalsWhat about a real chemical reaction…?
…Magnesium and Copper Sulphate
Magnesium + CopperSulphate
Copper + Magnesium Sulphate
The Reactivity of Metals
- Place four pieces of one of the metals in a spotting tile, each piece in a separate well
- Cover the metal with a few drops of a metal salt solution
- Record results in table
Remember to wear your safety goggles!!
Sodium could displace copper from copper
sulphate solution
TRUE
The Reactivity of MetalsTrue or False?
Gold could displace silver from silver nitrate solution
