A New Regional Conference Our chapter’s recent growth spurt and its return to operational excellence has not gone unnoticed.
Increasingly, IISE Headquarters has recognized the activities taken on by the Greater Wichita Chap-
ter. Features in the Institute’s newsletters and ISE Magazine have let other chapters share in our
best practices and lessons learned. Other chapters have contacted our chapter’s leaders to get infor-
mation about our strategy. The attention has been flattering, humbling, and certainly welcomed.
Especially welcomed has been the attention by the other chapters and the leaders of the South
Central United States Region within IISE. Current Regional Vice President (RVP) Niranjan Kulkarni and
former RVP Brandon Laird have been major catalysts in providing visibility to our chapter and help-
ing to set a direction for our future. They have also challenged us to grow the chapter in both
breadth and depth, teaming with the other chapters in Kansas; namely the Kansas City professional
chapter, and the Wichita State and Kansas State student chapters.
As noted in our Spring edition of The Org Chart, Wichita State is slated to host the 2020 South
Central Regional Conference in early March. This three day conference has long focused on bringing
together students from across the region, primarily for a scholastic paper competition. The chal-
lenge has been made by the RVPs to expand the regional conference as an event for all students and
professional IISE members in our region. After a coordination meeting with officers from the Wichita
State student chapter and several lively discussions, our chapter’s leadership decided in early June
to take on this challenge by planning a parallel professional track for the conference.
With the coming new semester, the plan is for the leaders of our chapter to work with the WSU
student chapter to set a complementary agenda of activities, collaborate with the other Kansas
chapters, and formulate a financial plan for the conference, which includes fundraising events.
Last month, members of the Greater Wichita Chapter were e-mailed about this effort with an invita-
tion to help with various planning activities (See related story Regional Conference Planning on Page
6). Thanks to those that have volunteered to help. If you want to lend you support, please contact
the chapter’s leadership team at [email protected]
Our Next Big Chapter Event Our next big event is a tour of the Wichita's new Mark Arts center. Originally founded as the Wichita
Art Association in 1920, Mark Arts is the area’s oldest and most comprehensive visual arts
organization. For more than 95 years, Mark Arts has made art and arts education available to the
citizens of Wichita and the surrounding communities.
Mark Arts offers a 5,000-square-foot main gallery with annual exhibitions showcasing regional and
national artists. Other exhibition spaces include the youth gallery and School of Creativity Commons.

A Message from the President
Chapter Membership
Please allow me to make an empathic point here:
My graduate degrees from Wichita State have Industrial Engineering
as the granting discipline, even though my masters program special-
ized in Operations Research and my doctoral plan of study included
just one IE course. I have no formal training in the fundamentals of
Industrial Engineering, yet I am a licensed Professional Engineer in
Industrial Engineering. I am currently very involved in the society
most associated with Industrial Engineering. But I am not an
Industrial Engineer ... never have been, never will be.
I’m a Systems Engineer.
With all due respect to Bard of Avon, there is a lot in a name. We
Systems Engineers have always had an identity crisis due to confu-
sion about the nature of our practice. For example, like many of
you, I work in the airplane building business. There, ‘Systems
Engineering’ traditionally means flight systems, not the discipline of
understanding, designing, and integrating disparate systems. There
are many like me in IISE who are laboring under the banner of
Industrial Engineer, but at best, we are working at its fringe.
When the Institute adopted Systems to its moniker, it may have
exasperated the SE identity crisis. While I personally welcomed
adding Systems to our name (because it makes me feel less of a
charlatan), many looked at this as IEs usurping another profession.
I have been told that SEs don’t feel welcome in the new IISE. That is
unfortunate, because combining Industrial Engineering with
Systems Engineering broadens the very nature of what our profes-
sion and this institute is about. Our historic alignment with manu-
facturing and construction now mirrors our modern efforts in health
care, biomedical engineering, transportation, energy, agriculture,
sports/entertainment, services, technology, information, and other
sectors with which we had only an affiliation in the past. Through
this marriage of disciplines, we are indeed experiencing the Rise of
the Industrial Systems Engineer (see the related story on Page 5).
To all my Systems Engineering colleagues, IISE is
your society! This chapter - while honoring its
legacy - is focused on a future with Industrial
and Systems Engineering as its identity.

Chapter Financial Report Continued from Page 3
Wichita has been blessed with a large number of compa-
nies employing ISEs. Many of the members of the Greater
Wichita Chapter have realized fulfilling careers under the
banner of multiple organizations. One of the most
successful is Mr. Joseph Schmidt.
Raised in Sharon, KS, Joe graduated from high school in a class of ten students that included singer Martina McBride. From there he attended Kansas State University where he joined (then) IIE in 1987 as a student. At KSU he earned a B.S. in Industrial Engineering. He has remained an avid fan of K-State sports—especially football! In his professional career, Joe has had the rare experience of “completing the cycle” of the major Wichita aviation industry by working at Boeing, Cessna, Hawker Beechcraft, Learjet, and — for the last eight months — Spirit AeroSystems. He also worked for Apex and Excel in Hesston, KS. Through most of his career, Joe has been a Quality Engineer. During his tenure at Textron, he obtained Six Sigma Green Belt status. Currently, Joe is an Industrial Engineer in his position at Spirit. He has also worked in Manufacturing Engineering and has been an MRP Analyst and Scheduler. Among the major efforts Joe has worked on during his career was an SAP implemen-tation and several new model programs while at Cessna. Joe Schmidt has been an active participant in the Greater Wichita Chapter of IISE. His attendance at chapter events is among the most faithful of our members. He especially enjoys the IISE plant tours and the networking opportunities which let him keep in-touch with former co-workers. Joe earned a Professional Engineer license in Kansas. He is also an active member in the American Society for Quality (ASQ), where he is a Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) and a Certified Quality Auditor (CQA). Joe’s personal ambition is to keep learning. He understands the changing nature of technology and seeks to make it work for him and those around him. Recently, Joe was welcomed to our chapter’s leadership team as a board member. In his volunteer work, he will help foster relationships with other Wichita STEM societies. Joe is the proud father of daughter Ariel who is currently enrolled in the Occupational Therapy graduate program at Creighton University.

IISE Annual March 2, 2018 Orlando, FL
Chapter members Laila Cure, Bayram Yildrim, Joan Wagner, Raye Vu, and John Huffman attended the
annual IISE conference held in Orlando, FL at the royal Palms Resort at Universal Studios. The conference
featured meetings and technical sessions covering various aspects of traditional Industrial and Systems
Engineering. It also featured a look ahead at emerging technical practices in model and simulation,
machine learning and artificial intelligence, blockchain architecture, IoT and Industry 4.0 digitalization, and
enterprise analytics. John Huffman presented a paper of "Enterprise Architecture and its Impact on ISEs",
which introduced the potential for applying systems engineering techniques to enterprise data and
supporting infrastructure.
WESCON Controls Tour June 17, 2018 WESCON Controls, Inc. — Wichita, KS
The chapter was given an excellent review of the operations and a tour of the Wichita facilities for WESCON
Controls, Inc. The Wichita plant has been in operation since 1947 and has undergone incredible expansion
through the year. Much of the equipment used to make cable was engineered by WESCON. Among the
controls manufactured by WESCON are: Light Duty Mechanical Controls, Panel Controls, Push-Pull Controls,
Brake Cable and Lever Systems, Remote Valve Controls, Rotary Push-Pull Lever Controls, Commercial
Controls, and Electronic Controls.
Wingnuts Baseball August 17, 2018 Lawrence-Dumont Stadium - Wichita, KS
Forty members and their guests attended the kick-off event for our fundraising activity in support of the
2020 Regional Conference to be held at WSU. For the fifth time, our chapter held a tailgate party prior to
the Wichita Wingnuts baseball game at historic Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The tailgate party consisted of
a BBQ with lots of excellent dishes provided by our members. Lawn games were available and folks spent a
nice couple of hours before the game meeting each other and catching up on family news. Also during the
tailgate party, the chapter presented a recognition award to Shawn Sauerbry for his outstanding work on
his senior design project from WSU. The ballgame started out great for the Wingnuts as they jumped to a
2-0 start on a monster home run. Unfortunately, the score didn't stand up as the visiting Chicago Dogs
countered with five unanswered runs. Still, it was a beautiful summer night in Wichita and the nice box
seats made things comfortable. After the game, the Wingnuts put on a fireworks spectacular which was an
event in itself. August 2018
2018 marks the second year of the Institute of
Industrial and Systems Engineers; a change
from the longstanding Institute of Industrial
Engineers.
The addition of Systems in our name opened
the door for wonderful possibilities. Most
people think of engineering as the practice of
‘building things’. We build industrial systems.
Increasingly, those in our discipline are being
looked upon to integrate the components of
industry into new systems. This includes herit-
age processes that were never designed to
integrate with modern methods.
While the addition of Systems to our name is
significant, no less important is the addition of
the preceding and. ‘Industrial and Systems
Engineers’ begs questions. Does it mean that
we are two complementing engineering disci-
plines in a single institute? Are they two labels
for the same thing? Is it an acknowledgement
that one is supplanting the other? Is it a chick-
en-and–the-egg thing with one being the
forerunner of the other? Is it a reflection of
something new?
The answer to all these questions may be
‘yes’. While IEs and SEs have traditionally
been treated as separate disciplines, since the
1980s there has been significant overlap of
interests, especially in related degree curricu-
la. Recently IE and SE departments at universi-
ties have been merging or adopting each
other’s names. In many countries, the names
are used interchangeably.
Most excitingly, IE and SE is merging into an
inter-discipline of Industrial Systems Engineer-
ing (denoted ISE). Use of the phrase has been
picking up steam in academic and govern-
ment circles. The magazine of our society is
named ISE. We use the term liberally here in
The Org Chart to describe our interdisciplinary
bent. The department at WSU is Industrial,
Systems, and Manufacturing Engineering
while KSU named its department Industrial
and Manufacturing Systems Engineering.
It may all be a matter of semantics for now,
but we may be heading towards the day that
our institute really is IISE?
Earning Power
Employment watchdog PayScale has recently
updated its list of the highest-paying bache-
lor’s degrees. The report includes early
career pay (0-5 years) and mid-career pay
(10+ years). PayScale also assigned a % high
meaning (which is the percentage of alumni
who believe that they’re making a difference
in the world). 45 of the 50 listed disciplines
are STEM or STEM-related.

Upcoming Chapter Events The following are the near-term events and activities of the chapter. E-mail notices will be sent to all
members as reminders and to communicate updates.
Regional Conference Planning
The following is a reprint of a recent e-mail (sent July 10, 2018) to our chapter’s members soliciting their
participation for planning activities for the 2020 IISE South Central Regional Conference.
Dear IISE Chapter 56 Member,
Our last newsletter (Spring 2018) contained an article about the South Central United States
Regional Conference being held at Wichita State in early March of 2020. For some time now, this
conference has brought together participants from the seventeen universities scattered throughout
Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas that have IISE student chapters. The main event of
the conference is the student paper competition, but there are also networking and educational
opportunities throughout the three days of the conference.
During the recent Annual IISE Conference, I met with our Regional Vice President (RVP) Niranjan
Kulkarni and our past RVP Brandon Laird to discuss the future activities of our chapter and things we
can support to strengthen our region. The BIG IDEA that came from this is to expand the 2020 South
Central Regional Conference at WSU to include a ‘Professional Track’. This track will be open to
professional members of IISE and others from industry. The Great Lakes Region did this at their
recent regional conference to great success.
Our chapter leaders’ met to discuss this and were unanimous in taking on this challenge.
Hosting even a modest-sized conference will be a formidable task for both the WSU student chapter and for our chapter. There will need to be continuous coordination in scheduling events. Funds need to be raised, affordable prices need to be set, and regular communications (especially advertis-ing) needs to be made. While March 2020 sounds far off, we need to start organizational tasks now! To get the ball rolling, we have four avenues to activity that we are pursuing:
Professional Planning Team – We are seeking volunteers to plan the professional track. We
hope to have a kick-off meeting in the coming weeks. Continued on Page 7
Joint Planning with WSU – Regular interaction with WSU is vital. We will need to coordinate the professional track with student activi-ties (What do we do in parallel? What do we share?, etc.).
Joint Planning with Kansas Chapters – Kansas is one of the most active states in IISE and we have been discussing a closer collabora-tion between the Kansas City, Wichita, Kansas State, and Wichita State chapters. There has been some informal discussion about a cooperative event at the Regional Conference.
Sponsorship and Fund Raising – Perhaps the most daunting task is funding the conference. We seek to make the conference afforda-
ble to all who attend. To help, we will seek corporate sponsorships and conduct fund raising activities. For example, the recent Wichi-ta Wingnuts Baseball and Tailgate party on Aug. 17 was a fund-raising activity.
I am appealing to all our members to get involved in this activity. If you would like to be on our planning team, please let me know. I any case, please support our fund raising efforts. All the best,
John E. Huffman, Ph.D., P.E. President of the Greater Wichita Professional Chapter (56) of The Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers
The response to this original appeal has been lukewarm at best. To-date, only one member who is not on the leadership team for the chapter has
volunteered their service. We intend to launch the planning sessions this month. We do not expect this to be a heavy time consuming activity if we
get enough volunteers to distribute the work. Please consider this request and let us know your intentions to participate by responding with an e-
mail to [email protected]. Thanks!
