Four divisions of Johns Hopkins – the schools of arts and sciences, engineering, business and education – offer more than 50 degree and certificate programs at the University’s 36-acre Montgomery County Campus in Rockville. Enrollment at MCC currently totals about 4,000, and consists mostly of working professionals who study part-time.

The campus is also home to the MCC Start-Up Center, which provides space for entrepreneurs in the earliest stages of starting a business, and for others seeking to establish an initial presence in the area. As of 2010, seven fledgling companies were operating in this space. In addition to those in the Start-Up Center, 11 other technology companies were operating in 23,000 square feet of space leased from MCC.

In 2010 the National Cancer Institute started construction of a new 575,000 square-foot research center at the Montgomery County Campus. Over time, up to 2 million square feet of additional research space could be developed on the Campus. Several million square feet of additional research and office space could be developed at the University’s 108-acre Belward Research Campus site, part of Montgomery County’s planned Shady Grove Life Sciences Center.

Montgomery County Campus

Suburban Hospital, founded in 1943, is a 222-bed community hospital located in Bethesda, primarily serving residents of Montgomery County. Suburban, which employed 2,166 people in 2010, joined the Johns Hopkins Health System in June, 2009.

Through its HeartWell program, the Hospital conducts free clinics several days each week at senior centers in Montgomery County.

The School of Education’s PRO-MAT program – the Professional Immersion Masters of Arts in Teaching – is a partnership between Johns Hopkins and the Montgomery County Public Schools aimed at recruiting and training new teachers for high-need areas in Montgomery County. After an intensive summer session, participants in the program – all of whom have strong academic backgrounds in specific subject areas – work full-time as teachers in Montgomery County schools, while studying part-time for an MAT degree.
