What is the Ecodesign Directive?
Aims to lower energy usage and environmental impacts of energy related products throughout their whole life cycle.
Introduced into European Union Legislation in 2005
Amended in 2009
Working plan for 2012-214
How Does the Directive Work?
1. European Commission adopts working plans to identify products to target.
2. Each product studied to determine possible benefits from ecodesign.
3. Draft submitted to Consultation Forum.
4. Draft voted on by Regulatory Committee.
5. Reviewed by European Parliament.
What Type of Products are Targeted?
Energy Using Products (EUPs)
Products that directly consume or generate electricity.
Boiler, Electronics, Washing Machine etc.
Lighting
Transformers, Industrial Fans
Energy Related Products (ERPs)
Products that do not directly use energy, but have effect on energy consumption.
Windows
Insulation Materials
Shower Heads
Projected Energy Savings
More than 80% of the environmental impact of a product is determined at the design stage.
First 13 measures projected to reduce electricity usage in EU by 12% of 2009 levels.
Benefits to European Consumers and Industry
Ensure the use of more energy efficient products that have reduced environmental impact.
“Sustainable Competitiveness”
Standardized regulations for all countries in European Union.
“Economies of Scale”
Energy Labeling Directive
Works in tandem with Ecodesign Directive
Grade products on a scale
Guides consumers towards products with better energy ratings
Phases out products with worst energy ratings
Expectations of Industries
Meet limits set by individual product measures
May require full life cycle analysis of products
Include information requirements for consumers
Any product that does not meet the requirements will not be approved for CE marking
Conclusions
Better products for consumers
Better products for the environment
Greatly help the EU meet energy reduction goals
