Dear Friends:
Recently I was outside a local business and noticed a large crowd waiting by a van parked outside
the business. The van belonged to another company called Flirty Cupcakes. Flirty Cupcakes is a
Chicago based business and you can hire them for corporate or private events. They sell cupcakes
from their van, and will come right out to your business door. I saw this van in February and I was
with my company’s HR administrator. The company sponsoring the event told us that it was very
successful but thought that the spring or summer would be a better season. It turns out that
Flirty Cupcakes was inspired by memories of an ice cream truck in the summer. The owner re-
called those days of excitement as a child waiting for the ice cream truck to come by and decided
to create something for adults to be able to experience a similar excitement. It seems that Flirty
Cupcakes is reaching this goal.
I am amazed that there is such buzz about cupcakes. In March I read an article about a cupcake
ATM to be opened at Sprinkles in Beverly Hills California, and eventually there would be cupcake
ATMS in 10 different locations. You simply insert your funds and a cupcake will come out. The
cupcake ATM will charge $4 per cupcake and only credit or debit cards will be accepted. The se-
lection of cupcakes will be changed on a daily basis but the most popular will remain and be avail-
able every day.
As we approach the end of the 2011-2012 chapter year we have an opportunity to examine how we
keep you satisfied with your membership benefits in the Calumet Chapter of the IMA. I firmly be-
lieve we offer excellent technical speakers on topics of interest to you and look forward to hearing
your input of topics, speakers, and locations for our next chapter year. I also hope you mark your
calendar to save the date of May 15, 2012 for our final meeting of the 2011-2012 featuring Chuck
Carlson. I would have never thought of the ways of distributing cupcakes but together with your
help we can bring the enthusiasm of the Calumet Chapter to even more accountants and finance
professionals in business.

"I don't have the time." "My family takes up
all my time in the evenings." "I get too tired
at night to study." "It's busy at the office at
this time of the year." Does this sound fa-
miliar? If you are a CMA candidate, chances
are you have previously uttered some varia-
tion of one or more of these statements.
Unfortunately, there isn't a "one size fits
all" solution to these hurdles. Start by being
honest with yourself. What sacrifices are
you willing to make to add value to your
professional life? What times of the day are
you the most productive? Does a quiet or
busy study space work better for you?
On average, candidates should dedicate 10-
20 hours per week studying for the CMA
exam. Therefore, you will need to deter-
mine what time-consuming activities can
temporarily be given up or deferred until
after you have completed the CMA exam.
These sacrifices can be anything, like giving
up your favorite morning talk show for a
couple of months or not going out to dinner
with friends as often.
When I started preparing for Part 1, I made
a point to tell my friends I couldn't go to as
many of our weekly functions because I
needed to prepare for the CMA exam. They
were very understanding and sometimes
kept me on track because they would make
sure to ask how my studies were going. I
was sad to miss out on the events, but the
sacrifice was well worth it when I could tell
my friends I had passed Part 1.
Once time has been carved out, you must
determine when is the best time to study.
Many people are most productive early in
the morning, when they are fresh and usu-
ally not disturbed. This time of day might be
good for working parents. They can get up
before the children start their day and get a
solid hour or two of undisturbed study
time. An added benefit is that you complete
your CMA review first each day, not later as
a last priority. Others might prefer to study
at night. Late hours after friends, family, or
roommates are no longer around to distract
you for whatever reason. Again, you must
be the one to determine when the best and
most productive time to study is for you.
Ultimately, if you are honest with yourself
and set up a regular schedule with clear
objectives, you will get into a routine and
find that you can manage your time effec-
tively.
Share your success! I would like to
hear how you passed the CMA exam.
