GET THE PICTUREAfter their release from Egypt, God led the people He rescued to Mt Sinai. There, God gave them His law. Now that they are saved and brought into relationship with Him, they need to know how to live with God. God began to build a nation, complete with a constitution based on the Ten Commandments.
Despite witnessing a dramatic theophany (appearance of God), while Moses was away on the mountain with the Lord, the people persuaded Aaron to fashion a golden calf – reminiscent of Baal worship. Almost immediately they forsook the covenant they had made with Yahweh and began to engage in idolatry.
At this time God gave a great deal of attention to the planning and construction of the tabernacle and the rules of sacrificial worship by which Israel might approach Him. He also instituted the priesthood.
