T A T T I N G T a l t i n g Shutt les are shaped l ike the one illustraled. Some are made w i t h a hook at one e n d w h i c h is used to p u l l the thread through picots in j o i n i n g . However , tor a be­g inner tlic one wit l iout a hook is easier to manage as the hook liindevs speed a n d is apt to be in the way. WINDING T H E S H U T T L E I f the bobbin is removable a n d has a hole at one side, tie the thread and w i n d the bobbin u n t i l fu l l . I f bobl i in is not removable w i n d thread a r o u n d bobbin in center of shutt le but never al low thread to project beyond the shutt le .

T h e s implest form of tatt ing is the r ing . T h i s is m a d e w i t h one shutt le only. W h e n m a k i n g a design of chains a n d rings two shuttles or 1 b a l l a n d 1 sh iut le are used.

W h e n a design of rings worked w i t h two colors is made , use 2 shuttles. W h i l e l e a r n i ng we suggest us ing " S T A R " B r a n d Mercer ized Crochet Cot ton Size 20.

I t must be r e m e m b e r e d whe n l e a r n i n g to tat that the knot is made on the shutt le thread a n d not wi th it thoiigli a l l act ion is done w i t h the shutt le thread. T h i s is accom­p l i shed by easing the thread a r o u n d fingers a n d p u l l i n g the shutt le thread taut.

DOUBLE S T I T C H U n w i n d the s h u i i l e so the thread is abont 12 inches long. H o l d the slnitt le between the t h u m b a n d forefinger of r ight h a n d , w i t h the thread coming from back of l iobbin , take the end of t l u e a d between the t h u m b a n d forehnger of the left h a n d a n d pa.ss it a r o u n d ll ie outstretched fin­gers, crossing it u n d e r the t h u m b . W i t h the shutt le i n your h a n d , pass the shutt le thread u n d e r a n d over the h a n d jus t below the po int of fingers. B y p u l l i n g the shutt le thread, the stitch slips back and forth . I f it does not, the stitch has been locked by a wrong mot ion a n d must be made over aga in . JOSEPHINE PICOTS Single knots or Joseph ine picots. Tl i is is a series of single knots or jus t ha l f of a double . F o u r or five knots for a s m a l l Josephine picot a n d 10 to 12 knots for a larger picot.
