SYSTEMIC STRESS MANAGEMENT
Gilbert Brenson-Lazan
WISDOM OF MY FATHER
…thirty years later.
AN IMPORTANT RELATIONSHIP
PRESSURE: application of
continuous forve on one body on
another that it is touching.
TENSION: two or more equal and
opposite pressures.
STRESS: systemic
decomposition resulting from an
excessive intensity of tension.
STRESS:
THAT UNBEARABLE DESPERATION THAT
RESULTS WHEN SANITY PREDOMINATES OVER THE OVERWHELMING
DESIRE TO GIVE THAT S.O.B. WHAT HE OR SHE
DESERVES.
THE ESSENCE OF OF STRESS
Stress is an inner turbulence caused by an individual perception of certain external event, not by the event itself.
Any given problem can be a
justification for some and a
challenge for others: take your
choice.
STRESS DEPENDS UPON CORTISOL
A defensive
hormone
secreted by the
adrenal glands
(related to
adenaline).
HOW WE GENERATE CORTISOL
Physically:
◦ Nutritional imbalance
◦ Smoking (directly or indirectly)
◦ Excessive use of alcohol
Socially:
◦ Arguments
◦ Telling and hearing lies
◦ Negative Recognition
◦ “Stuck” Relationships
◦ Excessive competition
Mentally:
◦ Negative thoughts
◦ Repression of emotions
◦ Stubbornness or
Inflexibility
◦ Mockery and belittlement
Spiritually:
◦ Spiritualization
◦ Dependence
◦ Escapism
◦ Excessive proselytism
MANIFESTATIONS OF
CORTISOL EXCESS (STRESS)
ADDITIONAL MANIFESTATIONS IN
TEAMS AND AND ORGANIZATIONS
ALL OF THE PREVIOUS, PLUS: Increased absenteeism, illness and
accidents Reduced job performance Increased interpersonal conflict
WE CAN ALSO GENERATE ENDORPHINS
A chemical
substance that
creates feelings of
well-being and
stimulates the
immune
system.

THE CONSTANT BATTLE
Our attitudes, thoughts,
feelings and behaviors can
generate Endorphins and
Cortisol.
Endorphins and Cortisol
destroy each other.
Therefore it is not enough to
just lower Cortisol or raise
Endorphins.
Both must be done
simultaneously.

Stress Management
WHAT IS RESILIENCE?
“The ability to face
internal or external
crisis and not only
effectively resolve it,
but also learn from it,
be strengthened by it
and emerge
transformed by it,
both individually and
as a group.”
Brenson-Lazan, 2003
Resilience requires:• Personal Development• Interpersonal Development• Vision• Strategic Thinking
THE HOPE:
“Everything can be taken from a
person except one thing: the freedom to choose a specific attitude when faced by a crisis.”
-Viktor Frankl
ORGANIZATIONAL RESILIENCE
Learn as a community
Recognize effective and ineffective actions, outlook and the consequences
Apply effective leadership styles
Take care of each other.
ESPECIALLY FOR CAREGIVERS:
Generate more
endorphins and reduce cortisol.
Know your personal limits
Maintain a strong support network
Be appreciative, solution-focused and future oriented.
“The road to successful change requires a patient compassion for the pain and fear of all those involved.”
Thomas Merton
