Still Image Analysis Editing
One Editing technique used in the trailer is the eye line match. It shows the woman’s confused state as she
is concentrating to see what is in the distance, then cuts to show what she is focusing on. The is
conventional to the genre because, it adds in suspense to the scene as one minute it shows confusion in
the woman’s face then cuts to a mysterious photo. This shows that it must be a significant and meaningful
photo to the film. This is also conventional to the form because, the trailer is mysterious and cuts to shot
takes of different scenes therefore showing that it is fast paced. The lighting is very dark which creating the
effect of it being very mysterious and obscure. The woman is seen to be very shadowy creating the effect
that she is not very important. She looks as if she is wearing rich clothing as they look silk like.
Another editing technique used was cutting,
this is a significant feature in a film trailer
because, it gives you an insight into the film as
it’s showing you a lot of short clips one after
another at different times rather than long
takes on certain clips. It is specific to the genre
as, a thriller is packed with hidden messages
and action scenes therefore to include certain
parts in a trailer they must make them short
takes. The form of a thriller, is usually
characterised by a mood of violence, the tone
of a thriller is usually coarse, slick and explicit
and the film trailer presents all of them.
The conventions of a thriller trailer
is to keep the audience of the edge
of their seat. The trailer is very
gripping and full of twists and turns
with the amount of scenes included
in the trailer therefore it certainly
keeps them on the edge. They tend
to create suspense, tension and
uncertainty. The dark scenes in the
trailer point of the uncertain moments.
This editing technique what they used, is called fade in/out. They have used
this so that it creates tension as you don’t know what to expect next when the
screen turns black. This is conventional to the genre as, thrillers are all about
the unexpected. The trailers want to draw you into wanting to watch the film
but they don’t want to give away too much information therefore they include
the suspense scenes where you don’t see what happens at the end of them. On
the other hand, this is conventional to the form because, the trailer includes a
lot of short takes and cutting away of scenes, it keeps the audience engaged
and wanting to watch it.
