2016 gratitude report
STANDING WITH IMMIGRANTS & REFUGEES SINCE 1910
EDUCATION EMPLOYMENT IMMIGRATION ADVOCACY
On behalf of the board, staff, volunteers and clients of Tacoma Community
House, we are pleased to share our 2016 Gratitude Report with you. Thanks to your support, TCH was able to serve over 3,500 individuals in the South Sound through our four core programs of education, employment, immigration and advocacy (for victims of crime) last year.
Now more than ever, TCH and its services are needed in our community. We offer a welcoming, safe place for immigrants, refugees and other community members to pursue their dreams. We provide information and education to immigrants and refugees in this challenging environment.
Through your generous support, we have been able to expand our services to meet the growing demand. In 2016, we
started Project Nightingale, in which we partner with Bates Technical College to provide Certified Nursing Assistant training and job placement. We took our successful Crash Course to Employment to Puyallup, offering the class to DSHS clients there.
In Education, we have added Chromebooks into several classrooms, bringing the latest technology tools to more of our students and accelerating their learning.
Immigration Services continues to see high demand for its services of Citizenship, family reunification visas and Deferred Action, especially given the current political climate.
The Client Advocacy program continues to partner with other organizations such as Northwest Immigrant Rights Project and the YWCA to improve access to a range
of services for those who have experienced domestic violence and other crimes.
Read2Me continues to serve 400+ young readers through the dedicated efforts of nearly 200 volunteers.
So many people were able to pursue their American Dream through your support. You can read some of their stories in this report. Thank you so much for your commitment to those we serve and to a more welcoming community for all!

PROGRAMS IN ACTION AZIZ and his family began receiving threats from the Taliban while he worked as an interpreter for the U.S. Army in Afghanistan. In 2014, Aziz and his wife, MARYAM, arrived in the U.S. as refugees seeking protection. The couple soon found TCH, where Maryam began studying English and Aziz met with our employment department. We were able to find Aziz a job within one week. The Ahmads now own their own home and have dreams of opening a small business! (PHOTO: JESSICA UHLER PHOTOGRAPHY)
“I am grateful for everything [TCH] has given me. Thanks to this place my life is now different. The sofa used to be my place of refuge. Now I go out and enjoy every day with my daughters and my boyfriend. Sixteen years had to go by for me to start living again; however it is never too late.”
—Anonymous Advocacy Client
MANUEL immigrated to the U.S. from Mexico in 1964, 35 years before his wife ZEFERINA could join him. With help from our immigration department, both earned their citizenship in 2016 and no longer have to fear being separated from their children—or each other.
YURIDIA earned her GED® in two months with help from our Basic Education for Adults (BEdA) classes. She also earned her Nursing Assistant certification through our employment department’s Project Nightingale!
