Dear family of St Patrick’s Catholic Parish – not only you in Emerald with whom I have been most involved,
but also you in Anakie and throughout the Gemfields, you in the Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church and
Primary School communities, you from Rolleston, Woorabinda, across all the schools, and in all the
communities throughout the Central Highlands (not all of whom I had the privilege of meeting, but all of
whom I have prayed for and have felt equally held in loving prayer), it is with great thankfulness and joy, as
well as with some sadness, that I start to draw to a close my diaconal ministry amongst you all. I write to you
from the Santa Teresa retreat centre in Ormiston, Brisbane – a place my classmates and I have visited many
times over the past 7 years, and where we now gather one last time to complete our journeys towards the
Priesthood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.
Each of us came to the Seminary by virtue of a call we felt in our hearts. That call has been tested in various ways, and has thus been
developed and matured. It has been affirmed in a particular way by those to whom we were entrusted, the formators at Holy Spirit
Seminary, who patiently and generously accompanied us throughout our seminary lives. But it must be noted that our vocations were also
affirmed by you, the faithful, with sincerity and joy. You have cradled us in love and in prayer the whole way through. Together with the
Seminary community, you have safeguarded our vocations and helped us grow into the people God is calling us to be.
It is tremendously humbling to have walked this road with people such as yourselves, and to now reach the end of one journey and find
therein the beginning of another. Our Seminary journey is almost complete. Soon we will be priests, living and working amongst you,
seeking to serve you as together we drive the mission of our Lord forward, making God’s love and grace known to the ends of the earth,
establishing God’s reign of justice and peace, letting each soul enjoy the freedom of the salvation won for us on Calvary, and the fullness of
life in the Spirit which Jesus brought us into in the mystery of his Resurrection, Ascension, and the ongoing miracle of Pentecost.
I thank you all for the immense kindness you have shown me, and for the many ways you have encouraged me. I thank Frs Truc and Yon for
taking me under their wings over the past six months, for their friendship and for the great respect and liberty they gave me to engage in
ministry with my own imagination and gifts. I thank also, in a particular way, Cathy and Francie on the Parish Office, for their constant
support and the trust they gave me. This team has brought me countless blessings while in Emerald. Maria Hoare, Anne Hattie and Pam
Milner have also been a wonderful support, allowing me to enjoy collaborating with their respective communities. I also thank the school
communities for the way you have always welcomed me. These encounters at school Masses, sacramental meetings, in your classrooms, or
in the playground, are very precious to me, and I pray they continue to bear good fruit for you in your lives, as they do in mine.
There is more I could say, and more people who deserve thanks, but I will express this another time. I am praying for you all while on
retreat. I know that the best (and only legitimate) thanks I can give you is to be the best priest I can be for
the rest of my life. So, with God’s grace, I will do this. Over these days, and forever after, I will see you in the
Eucharist.
Yours most sincerely,
Deacon Ashwin

OPENING HYMN
HOLY GOD, WE PRAISE THY
NAME. Grosser Gott. Traditional. AOV 2:129
Holy God, we praise Thy name; Lord of all, we bow before Thee! All on earth Thy scepter claim, All in Heaven above adore Thee; Infinite Thy vast domain, Everlasting is Thy reign.
Hark! the loud celestial hymn Angel choirs above are raising, Cherubim and seraphim, In unceasing chorus praising; Fill the heavens with sweet accord: Holy, holy, holy, Lord. Holy Father, Holy Son, Holy Spirit, Three we name Thee; While in essence only One, Undivided God we claim Thee; And adoring bend the knee, While we own the mystery.
PENITENTIAL RITE: I confess to Almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary, ever–Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.
GLORY TO GOD Mass Shalom Colin D Smith and Paul
Mason Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. GOSPEL Matthew 28:16-20
A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Baptise them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
The eleven disciples set out for Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had arranged to meet them. When they saw him they fell down before him, though some hesitated. Jesus came up and spoke to them. He said, 'All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you. And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.' The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. THE NICENE CREED
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen
OUR SUPPER INVITATION Kevin Bates SM. As One Voice Vol 2:185
Take of my bread and eat, drink my new wine. Take of my life and live, branch of my vine. Let me befriend you now, eat, take your fill. Don’t be afraid to dream, love has its will. Take up your burden now, walk till you find just what the journey means, walk while there’s time. Food for the journey will answer your need. Don’t be afraid to walk, love, my love will lead. Take of my bread and eat, drink my new wine. Be a sweet nourishment to good friends of mine. Let me befriend you now, eat take your fill. Share with your people, that love has its will. Take of my bread and eat, drink my new wine. Take of my life and live, branch of my vine. Copyright © 1985 Willow Publishing P/L. One License online. Used with permission. Licence No. 622478A
GLORY AND PRAISE TO OUR GOD Daniel L Schutte. As One Voice Vol 1. No 16
Refrain: Glory and praise to our God, Who alone gives light to our days. Many are the blessings he bears To those who trust in his ways. We, the daughters and sons of him Who built the valleys and plains, Praise the wonders our God has done In every heart that sings. In his wisdom he strengthens us, Like gold that's tested in fire. Though the power of sin prevails, Our God is there to save. Copyright (c) 1976 New Dawn Music. OCP Publications. All rights reserved.
