NEWSLETTER 13/2016 6 MAY 2016
Dear Parents and Friends of St Clare’s
As I write our HSC students, their teachers and parents are meeting to discuss the progress that
our Year 12’s have made and the challenges they face as they seek to maximise their potential
and achieve their post-secondary school goals. These discussions are a great help to all parties.
They inform parents and students about progress and help teachers gain further insight into how
students are “travelling” outside of school hours. Parents can share their concerns and reinforce
to their sons and daughters the importance of their education as a means of “getting where they
want to go.” My thanks to the many families who attended and to our staff for their fine work
on behalf of our young people.
This week our Year 10 students gathered to unveil a plaque in remembrance of Jay Waring-
Smith brother of Eamon Smith who passed away earlier this year. Members of the family
attended the gathering including his mother, Paula, father, Tony and his brother Connor as well
as his nanna, Betty and grandmother, Mary. Following a moving ceremony which included
prayer, music and quiet reflection a plaque was unveiled in the St Clare’s memorial garden by
Hugh Carney, Logan Wallis, Wade Harry and Keirren Cochrane as a mark of solidarity and
support for Eamon and his family. Thanks to Year 10 Student Coordinator, Marian Parvin and
students, Renee Elliott, Jennifer Wesley, Macabe Grass, Rhys Hood, Matthew Parvin,
Benjamin Cross and Ruby McIntosh who lead us in prayer and Teisha Farr and Charlotte
Higgins for their musicianship. A special thanks to Des Augey who attended as a
representative of the Augey family as the garden has been created in memory of Adam. The
ceremony was a wonderful expression of care and support for those experiencing the pain of
loss and grief.
There is an increasing body of evidence that shows that being concussed is a serious injury
which could have a devastating long-term effect on an individual’s ability to lead a happy and
fulfilling life. If your child receives a blow to the head, or is concussed while playing weekend
sport please ensure that their wellbeing has been assessed by a qualified person before they
attend school. Also a note should be sent to your child’s Student Coordinator reporting the
incident so the young person’s wellbeing can be monitored.
On Tuesday night I had the pleasure of attending the Year 10 Elective Music class performance
night. The team work and collaborative approach shown by the group was outstanding. Their
performance was very much enjoyed by parents, friends and staff and highlighted the great
level of musical talent in the year level. My thanks to the musicians and teacher Carmel Brown
for their fine work.
At our staff meeting this week our teachers continued the discussion about excursions. We
noted the positive learning that takes place when students are out of class and the opportunities
for learning a change of environment may create. We also shared frustrations about paper
work, contacting students who don’t attend meetings, student’s absence from class and
subsequent problems of collecting student’s work and ensuring catch-up exams are completed.
In the next few weeks I will be meeting with students to talk about excursions. I will be asking
them to tell me when an excursion has contributed positively to their understanding and
learning and to tell me about their frustrations regarding the excursion process at the school.
I would welcome any feedback from parents regarding school excursions, field trips and the
like. Feel free to share your thoughts by email or phone, or you could attend our next Parents
and Friends meeting which will be held in the school library next Wednesday, 11 May at 6 pm.
Enrolment interviews for the St Clare’s Year 7 cohort of 2017 are well under way. Families
who are new to the school are being interviewed by school executive members while students
with siblings at the school are interviewed by Studies and Student Coordinators. If you know
of a family who is yet to complete the enrolment paperwork, could you give them a gentle
reminder that the process is under way. St Clare’s is administered by the Catholic Schools
Office based in Newcastle and implements the enrolment guidelines posted on the CSO
website.
We are delighted to report that St Clare’s Debating Teams competing in the Taree and District
Eisteddfod won three out of the four Finals: Junior by a Year 7 team, Intermediate by a Year
10 team and the Senior Division by our Year 12 team. More information in next week’s
newsletter.
As you move through the newsletter you will be struck by the great amount of time, energy and
enthusiasm students and staff invest in leaning at the school. A great deal of this learning takes
place outside the classroom and outside school hours. Students and staff invest many hours to
ensure that their efforts are productive in terms of learning and useful to the community. In all
cases our young people are a credit to their family and St Clare’s High School. As a
community we have much to celebrate!
God Bless
Principal

CAREERS CORNER:
This week, Careers Corner features:
Years 12 – Careers Day 2
Year 11 – Semester 1 Report uses
Year 10 – selection of Mathematics for 2017 Year 11 AND a general notice for Years 10 -
12 regarding new entry procedures for the NSW Police Force.
Year 12 students will have their second Careers Day next Friday, 13 May 2016. The day is
structured to focus on the needs of two broad groups:
Group 1
Students who have as their goal to study at university in 2017 or after a gap year
Students who are sure that they want to study with a private provider e.g. ACPE, William
Blue etc.
Group 2
Students wishing to gain employment short or long term either locally or elsewhere
Students looking for traineeships or apprenticeships
Students who have no idea what they want to do and are pretty sure that university is not a
high priority
A collaborative planning effort including:
mentoring by our previous long-term Careers Adviser, Carol Healey,
support from ex-student Noni Hardes (nee Loughland, Class of ’08), and
consultation with student leaders
has produced a very full program which addresses the needs of all students.
Noni has recently returned to Taree to work with ETC - Enterprise and Training Company,
and is providing the link to various support agencies such as TAFE, Centrelink, VERTO, Mid
Coast Connect, and Great Lakes Community Resources, all of whom will be in attendance
on the day.
Final details of the program will be published in Careers Corner next week.
An update for the Defence Forces Gap Year Program:
Applicants must have completed Year 12 and be aged between 18 and 24 years old as of
1 April 2017 (Navy), 31 May 2017 (Army) or 7 April 2017 (Air Force). The pay is of the
order of $57,000 p.a.
Year 11 students need to be mindful that the Semester 1 Reports which will follow the
approaching Mid-Course Examinations will need to be appended to, and/or referenced in, many
applications in both 2016 and 2017. These applications include:
early entry to university
scholarships
accommodation
school reference
employment
Accordingly, every effort should be made to maximise marks and to attract favourable
comments by teachers.
Year 10 students are approaching another important time in their lives as they will soon be
selecting 2017 Year 11 courses. These choices may be influenced by the decision by the
University of Sydney to insist on 2 Unit Mathematics (NOT General Mathematics) as a pre-
requisite to entry into some courses in 2019.
From: the University of Sydney website (http://sydney.edu.au/study/maths)
Mathematics course prerequisites
To apply for some courses, students are required to complete mathematics through their high
school studies. The University is introducing mathematics course prerequisites for some
courses from 2019 to help students thrive in their science, technology, engineering and
mathematics related degrees and prepare them to tackle future career challenges.
Meeting the requirement
Students need to achieve Band 4 in the NSW Higher School Certificate (HSC) Mathematics
(not General Mathematics) to enrol in a range of courses, including economics, commerce,
engineering and IT, project management, psychology, pharmacy, veterinary science and
science. [It also includes many combined courses which include one or more courses from this
list e.g. B Information Technology/B Laws]
Please note, students (currently in Year 11) who defer their offer to study at the University in
2018 are not required to meet the mathematics course prerequisites. These students will be
assessed on current requirements for their chosen course.
Other universities MAY follow this requirement but, as it is getting later into the year, this is
more likely to apply to current Year 9 students rather than current Year 10s.
NSW Policing Recruitment Process – 2016
All students in Years 10, 11 and 12 have been sent an email regarding NEW recruitment
processes for entry into the NSW Police Force. These changes are significant as the NSW
Police Force has introduced a fairly extensive new recruitment process. In brief:

2. Your driver’s licence must be free of ‘incident’ for 12 months
3. Sit the Police Entrance Examination

HOSPITALITY HAPPENINGS: During the last school holidays, 25 students from Mr
Laurent and Mr Constantine’s Year 10 and 11 Hospitality classes, volunteered to help with the
“Australian Rotary Health” function which was held on 16 April in Queen Elizabeth Park, on
the bank of the Manning River.
These students excelled themselves on Saturday and Saturday night when they prepared the
venue, some food and then waited on tables for 420 guests. Students worked from 3 pm until
10 pm and were very professional in the manner in which they carried out their duties.
Once again the students lead by
example and received high
praise from the Rotary
Committee as well as the guests.
I was very proud of the students
and would like to congratulate
them.

Teacher
YEAR 10 HOSPITALITY: Five Year 10 Hospitality students assisted with the catering for
the parish ladies dinner on Wednesday
night. The students were impressive in
the manner in which they plated and
served the meals. They also
enthusiastically cleared the tables and
washed up the dishes. The function was
a fundraiser for the homeless and needy
in the Taree community. Congratulations
and well done Hannah Brown,
Monique Cushway, Kiara Andrews,
Danielle Murray and Layla Solomon.

The practises will culminate in a combined concert on Friday, 27 May 2016, at the Taree
Baptist Centre, 441 Kolodong Road, Taree at 7 pm. This is a very exciting collaboration and
will be an excellent concert. Our students will open the show and will perform the finale with
the African Choir.

DIO TOUCH: On Thursday, 28 April, four school touch teams travelled down to Maitland to
compete in the Diocesan Touch Football Tournament. Each team had four round games and
had to place either 1st or 2nd in their pool to proceed through to the finals. All teams were very
successful on the day with each team making it to the semi-finals. Unfortunately none of our
teams progressed through to the final but they all put in a big effort, displaying a high level of
touch skills. The day was also used as a selection for the Diocesan Representative teams. The
following people were selected:
U/15 Girls: Emma Yarnold and Thalia Simon
U/15 Boys: Mitchell Black, Lleyton Henry and Jack Wood
Open Girls: Makayla Foster
Open Boys: Tom Steedman and Tanna Hinton

Combined Catholic Colleges (CCC) Sport Selection process REMINDER: Any student
who wishes to trial for CCC selection must follow a specific registration process. CCC trials
are for students who excel in their chosen sport and who wish to trial for a position to represent
the Combined Catholic Colleges. Students should inform the Rep Sport Coordinator of their
interest in trialling and students must be approved by the school to attend these selections.
The following sports require individual online registration which takes you straight to
NSWCCC selections: AFL, Baseball, Basketball, Cricket, Diving, Golf, Hockey, Netball,
Rugby League, Rugby, Softball, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball.
Selections for these sports occur at different times throughout the year, some of the sports
mentioned have already occurred in Term 1. The details and deadlines for each sport are
outlined on the following website https://www.csss.nsw.edu.au.
To be eligible to trial for CCC selection in Athletics, Cross Country, Swimming, Football
and Touch the process begins from being selected in the school representative team, then
trialling for the diocesan team before proceeding to CCC selections if successful.
Any queries about the process should be directed to Miss Rowsell or you can access the website

SCHOOL SOCIAL – BACK IN TIME: Our first school social was held on Wednesday
night- the first week of Term 2!
The theme was “Back in time”. We saw some wonderful outfits that students had put a lot of
time into. It was a wonderful way to start the term and I thank all the students who came and
were on their best behaviour. I would also like to thank all the staff who gave up their time;
especially “Eagle eye Evans” who made sure all students partied in a safe manner.
We had a wonderful parade of best dressed outfits as you can see below and the deserved
winners were very happy to receive a voucher from the canteen. Thank you to Mrs K who
ensured the students remained well hydrated throughout the night!
We look forward to seeing the students at our next social to be held later in the year.
Jane Polson, SRC Coordinator
MATHS WORKSHOP - Mathematics Workshop provides the opportunity for every student to
obtain assistance and support in improving their understanding of
mathematics. Four mathematics teachers are available each week
to explain the concepts you are finding difficult or give
assistance to enable you to complete your homework,
assignments or any work that you may have missed due to
absence from class.
WHEN IS IT ON? Wednesday lunchtime - every week.
Bring your lunch!
WHERE? Room 10
We hope to see you there!
Mrs Julie Rowsell- Mathematics Coordinator
LEAVE NOTES & STUDENT MESSAGES: It would be appreciated if parents/guardians
would send in a written note if their child needs to leave early for appointments etc. Notes
should be handed in at the front office in the morning before roll call. If parents/guardians
need to notify their child of a change of afternoon arrangements, it is necessary to phone the
school prior to 2:25 pm (End of Lunch – Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday) or prior to
1:55 pm (End of Lunch – Thursday Sport) as it is often difficult to locate students if their last
lesson is a PE Prac or there has been a room change. Students cannot be collected from the
school during school hours by anyone other than a parent or guardian without written
permission. Thank you.
LATE NOTES: Lateness to school is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained to
the school the same way as other forms of absence. Arriving Late for school requires a
handwritten note from a parent/carer or a phone call from a parent/carer or the absence is
recorded as an unexplained partial absence. Thank you.
SCHOOL CLINIC: Students are reminded that if they are unwell whilst at school they are to
advise their teacher who will then send them to the Front Office. If necessary, the office staff
will contact a parent while the student waits in the Clinic. Students are not to contact parents
on their mobile phones as this leaves teachers and office staff unaware of the situation and is
also in breach of the school policy – use of mobile phones. Thank you.
