35 New Saints Canonized
During the Rite of Canonization, Sunday,
Oct.15, 2017 Pope Francis proclaimed 35 new
Catholic saints, among them Spaniard Father
Manuel Miguez Gonzalez, a late 19th and early
20th century figure who dedicated his life to the
education of women, which is the reason some
consider him a “feminist” saint.
Others canonized by Francis on Sunday
were Father Angelo of Acri, Italy, a Capuchin
Franciscan, as well as 33 martyrs, known as the
“Martyrs of Natal,” that they were assassinated in a
wave of anti-Catholic persecution by Dutch
Calvinists in Natal, Brazil. Among them were 28
lay people, two priests murdered for their faith in
Brazil, and three young children from Mexico. All
are considered the first Christians killed for their
faith in the New World.
In introducing the new saints, Francis said that
without love the Christian life is “empty,” like a
soulless body, “an impossible ethic, a collection of
rules and laws to obey for no good reason.” For
God, Francis said, “it is not enough that we should
do our duty and obey His laws. He desires a true
communion of life with us, a relationship based on
dialogue, trust and forgiveness.” The pope warned
of one of the most dangerous evils for one's faith
life: routine. He said "This is the danger: a
Christian life that becomes routine, content with
'normality,' without drive or enthusiasm, and with a
short memory." The Holy Father referred to the
Christian life as a “love story with God. "He noted
that “The Saints who were canonized today, and
especially the many martyrs, point the way.”

Many thanks to all the community members who
answered the call to volunteer on November 22, for the
“Meals for the Heartland” event that is being hosted at
the Panorama school. At this time all of the volunteer
shifts are filled! We will not be able to accommodate
any more volunteers that day.
Thank you!
Life is Primary
Our participation at Mass is meant to spur us on to
create a better world, in which all life, including the
unborn, is protected. In his encyclical letter on the
Eucharist, Pope John Paul II wrote the following:
“Certainly the Christian vision leads to the expecta-
tion of “new heavens” and “a new
earth” (Rev 21:1), but this increas-
es, rather than lessens, our sense of
responsibility for the world today. I
wish to reaffirm this forcefully at
the beginning of the new millenni-
um, so that Christians will feel more obliged than
ever not to neglect their duties as citizens in this
world. Theirs is the task of contributing with the
light of the Gospel to the building of a more human
world, a world fully in harmony with God's plan.”
Month of the Souls in Purgatory
Our Catholic traditions comfort us amid the changes
of life, as we come together in November we
remember those who have passed into the promise of
eternal light and peace. We pray, in gratitude, for the
blessing of their life and love for us. We ask that
Jesus would hold all who grieve their loss close to
His merciful heart. We ask that they would be com-
forted by God's healing presence as they continue
their own journeys toward heaven.
Witnessing to the Sanctity of Human Life:
The Example of Jerome Lejeune, M.D.
In 1959 Lejeune discovered the cause of Down’s
Syndrome.
He committed himself to the pro-life cause when
he discovered that children with Down’s Syndrome
were being aborted in ever greater numbers. In
1991, he wrote a summary of his reflections on
medical ethics:
1). Christians, be not afraid. It is you who possess
the truth. Not that you invented it but because you
are the vehicle for it. To all doctors, you must re-
peat: "you must conquer the illness, not attack the
patient."
2). We are made in the image of God. For this rea-
son alone all human beings must be respected.
3). Abortion and infanticide are unspeakable
crimes.
4). Objective morality exists. It is clear and it is
universal.
5). In so-called pluralistic societies, they shout it
down our throats: "You Christians do not have the
right to impose your morality on others." Well, I
tell you, not only do you have the right to try to
incorporate your morality in the law but it is your
duty.
In 1993, Blessed Pope John Paul, his close friend,
appointed Lejeune as the first president of the Pon-
tifical Academy for Life.
French bishops have introduced his cause for
canonization.
