APRIL TIDBITS
April 1st is April Fool’s Day which originated in 1693 and is believed to have been in-spired by The Nun’s Priest’s Tale from Geoffrey Chau-cer’s Canterbury Tales.
There were originally 29 days in April until Julius Caesar added a 30th day when the Julian calendar was created.
SPRING IS UPON US
It’s hard to believe that the 2020 - 2021 school year is almost over! Over the next few weeks
most of our students will be taking end-of-year or STAAR tests to demonstrate what has
been learned this year. We wish all of our friends the best of luck on their tests and hope
that they all approach the situation with a positive, worry-free attitude. Here are some tips
to help your student prepare for test days:
Before: Although your student is probably getting all of the preparation
they need at school, there’s always opportunity at home to get some extra prep work in
areas where you know he or she might struggle. TEA even has a place where students
can practice on previous years’ tests just to get used to question formats and how the
test looks.
On Test Day: Get a good night’s sleep, eat a healthy breakfast, and make sure your
child heads to school with a positive mindset.
Afterwards: Take tim e to go over the results with your child. Discuss the
things they did well on and the areas where there is room for improvement.
Testing can be big and scary (and stressful!) for our students. It’s important to remind them
that the test isn’t about what they know but how well they’ve been taught what they are
supposed to learn. The tips above can help test day be a much more positive experience
(especially if you toss in an ice cream cone at the end of test day!).
SUMMER IS AROUND THE CORNER
Once we get past the testing mentioned above, students have just a few weeks of school left
before summer. We always spend this time planning for our 21st Century ACE summer
programming. This year is no different except for the fact that we’re planning for three
different summers: face-to-face, virtual, or some mix of the two. At the time of this newslet-
ter being written, we do not know exactly what our summer is going to look like. We hope
to have some face-to-face component and we will also likely have a virtual component to
accommodate as many students as possible.
We will share more as soon as we know it. Keep reading our newsletters, make sure you are
getting our Remind messages, and follow us on Facebook @TCISD21stCenturyACE.

ELEMENTARY PROGRAM ENRICHMENT
The face-to-face programming at Kohfeldt, Guajardo and Roosevelt-Wilson Elementary Schools is provid-
ing students with daily enrichment activities that enhance their regular day academics. These activities
incorporate a varied learning experience into fun instruction where students often don’t even realize they’re
still “learning”. See the pictures below and on the next page, and stay tuned for more details on some virtu-
al student showcases that we are planning for your student’s respective campus.

MORNINGS @ FRY
With fourth term grade deadlines approaching (yes, your child should have brought grades home yester-
day!), Levi Fry’s morning program has placed an extra focus on helping students get caught up academical-
ly. Let us know if there is a specific area or subject where you think your student needs extra attention.
BLOCKER SEWING CLASS
Our surprise hit class of the semester has been Ms. Patrick’s sewing class at Blocker Middle School! The
combination of her calming presence as an instructor and the mesmerizing ability of sewing to allow it’s
participants to get lost in their creations has kept students “yarning” for more. Below you can see some of
their beautiful creations!

BUILDING STEAM AT TCHS
Students at Texas City High School continue to create with our Mindworks STEAM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, Art and Math) learning kits. Below are some pics of our piñata projects in preparation for
Cinco de Mayo as well as one student’s pastel interpretation of Batman.
TRASH BASH 2021
Students and families from several of our program sites showed up at Rainbow Park on March 27th for the
annual Trash Bash. Due to the pandemic, the event was organized a little differently with groups being
asked to conduct smaller scale clean ups on their own. In just a few hours we were able to pick up approxi-
mately 100 pounds of litter from the park grounds. Great work, ACE students and families!!!
