BOR 2012
Berklee On the Road (BOR) took place for the first time in Brazil from November 1 to 4, in the “Jardins” branch of Souza Lima School of Music. BOR is an intensive course in improvisation designed for all musical styles in which Berklee and Souza Lima together teach classes during four consecutive days and students leave with a certificate from the two institutions.
BOR 2012
This course has been taking place for 20 years now in Puerto Rico and for the past 15 years in Italy. In both of these places, the course lasts up to a week and has an average of 500 students per year. Here in Brazil, this was the first year, but it will become and annual event.

In this first edition, Fernando Huergo (bass), George Russell Jr. (piano) and Casey Scheuerell (drums) came from Berklee. Lupa Santiago (guitar) and Guilherme Ribeiro (piano) represented Brazil and Souza Lima. During the four days, there were master classes every morning. After lunch, in addition to the master classes, students also had ensemble practice with the professors.

So that all students could take advantage of all the professors, the student group was divided into four parts and the professors traded off teaching the different groups. On one of the nights of BOR, there was a concert, but on the other nights student jam sessions ruled the evenings, which led to lots of interaction between all the participants, who had come form all four corners of Brazil and all of Latin America.

“Students of all levels wound up winning,” commented Lupa Santiago. And he already announced that next year the second edition of the BOR will take place: “The course is neither for solely advanced level students nor for just basic level students. There are challenges for all levels,” Lupa explains. “This is a super dense course and everyone will end up with lots of material to work on.”
