Eat five or more fruits
and vegetables every
day.
Fruits and vegetables provide
vitamins, minerals, and other
nutrients that are important for
growth and development.
Different cooking styles and can
change the flavor and texture of your
food. If you do not like carrots raw,
that does not mean you will not like
them roasted!
Some healthy ways to prepare your
vegetables are steaming, sautéing,
boiling and roasting.
Not every food is love at first bite. It
can take up to 7 to 10 tries before
you like a new type of food, so keep
trying it! You never know which new
food might become your new favorite
snack.

Schools across the county have partnered with the Florida
Department of Health in Okaloosa County to present Healthy
Okaloosa Schools. Together we are making Okaloosa County a
Healthier Place to Live, Learn, Work and Play!
Limit recreational
screen time to
two hours or less
each day.
A great way to reduce screen
time is by getting outside! Your
backyard provides a wonderful
ecosystem to study. Search your
plants for living creatures, such
as insects, birds, fungi, worms,
and more! Record the wildlife you
find to see how it changes over
time. Write down detailed notes
about each living creature you
find and then try to identify it.
This is a great way to discover
our natural environment.

Be physically
active at least
one hour every
day.
Kids and teens need 60 minutes
of physical activity every day to
stay healthy!
Some easy ways to get more
activity into your daily routine
are:
• Take a family walk around
the neighborhood
• Have a family dance party in
your living room
• Toss or kick a ball around in
the yard
• Do morning stretches or yoga
• Play tag in your backyard
Good brushing habits keep your teeth
healthy! Brush for at least 2 minutes, 2
times a day. That is just 4 minutes every
day. And never share your toothbrush!
This spreads germs and could make
your and the person you share with sick.

Eliminate use of and exposure to
tobacco and nicotine
products.
Smoking is one of the worst
things you can do to your
body. Smoking can cause cancer and
heart disease. It can also make your
breath smell bad, turn your teeth yellow,
make your sick more often, make it hard
for you to play sports, and empty your wallet (cigarettes and
tobacco products are expensive). Do yourself a favor and do not
start!

It can be hard to drink enough water every day, but it is
very important during the summer months. Our bodies
lose water through breathing, sweating, and digestion.
Use these tips to help you stay hydrated and energized:
• Use frozen fruit instead of ice cubes
• Flavor water with fruits like cucumbers, lemons, and limes
• Use a stainless steel tumbler to keep your drink cold all day
