Summary and overview

for the first time snow preservation systemfor the first time adjustable snow temperature from -4 to -8 C or morefor the first time fully air-conditioned

Therefore:no expensive repetitive snowmakingno freezing-over of snow due to geothermal energy

Result: The world-wide unique snow preservation system provides for air-conditionedand constant training conditions at any time.

Looking at the future of sports, one has to consider two questions:

1.) What secures today’s level of winter sports achievements?2.) What could lead to an increase in the present performance?

Answering these points one has to take into account several factors. We start with the performance pyramid of competitive sports.

Performance pyramid of competitive sports (illustration)This picture shows clearly that the security to develop top athletes increases thebroader the basis of young athletes (bottom of pyramid).Next to the “human factor” the global climatic changes are a crucial aspect for thesuccess of winter sports in the future. A study of the Geographical Institute at theUniversity of Zurich arrives at the following conclusion: “The climatic change causesdifficulties in the skiing regions; because of the global warming only regions above1,500 meters over NN have the guarantee of snow.”

Some influences, which will lead to this result, are:

missing precipitation leading to melting glaciersthe temperature of the atmosphere, which rose about 0.5 C (1.1 F) duringthe last 100 yearsa forecasted rise in temperature of 2 – 3 C (4.4 – 6.6 F) within the next 50 yearsa rise of the snow line to approx. 1.800 m until 2050the decrease of snow coverage in the mountains

In the near future, these factors will lead to a lack of ideal training possibilities forthe winter sports community, because of the missing snow guarantee during thewinter months.

Even the world-wide ski federations have recognised the explosiveness of the topic. At the Forum Nordicum, which took place in Cavalese (Italy) in October 2002, thehead of the FIS, Bengt Eric Bengtsson, concluded:

“…that an important prospect for the disciplines of cross-country skiing lies – amongother things – within the development and use of ski tunnels.”
