A Reflection by
Deacon James Ogbonna
July 22, 2018
The gathering of God’s people is a consistent theme in all our readings this
Sunday. The Church is inviting us to celebrate Christ the good shepherd
who gathers his scattered people and leads them to the Father.
Through the prophet Jeremiah, as we see in today’s first reading (Jeremiah
23:1-6), God condemns the leaders of Israel. These leaders did not care
for or attend to the needs of the people. Basically leaderless, the people
became dejected, confused, and vulnerable which led them to become
lawless. They turned away from God and were taken into captivity by the
Assyrians.
God did not abandon his people like the Israelite leaders did. He promised
to bring them back from captivity and to gather them into one people again.
He promised to raise a righteous leader for them; one that would govern
them wisely with compassion and mercy. This leader would teach them
the right things to do and would take care of their spiritual and temporal
needs. In today’s gospel reading (Mark 6:30-34), we see the fulfillment of
Jeremiah’s promise of a righteous leader in the person of Jesus Christ.
Jesus exemplifies the good shepherd as he attended to the needs of his
flock; seeing to it that they were healed and restored. Taking pity on the
people, Christ did not abandon them for the rest that he had planned on
spending with his disciples.
In our present-day society we are much like the Israelites in Jeremiah’s
prophecy; divided, scattered and driven away. We continuously demon-
strate that as individuals and families we are drawn in different directions,
buckle under many of the demands that are made of us, and driven apart
from one another due to conflicts in the practical and moral life which we
are supposed to live according to the commandments of God. Jesus looks
down on us and pities us as he did on the vast crowds 2000 years ago.
As a compassionate Lord and the good shepherd, Jesus knows our situa-
tion. He knows the pressures we feel, he knows our needs, concerns and
worries. He will take pity on us and will not keep his distance from us if we
invite him into our lives. Jesus became the good shepherd and laid down
his life for his sheep. Past or present, Jesus’ sacrifice frees all of us from
sin and death.
There is a pervasive helplessness in our current world. There are reports
of people fleeing their countries in fear of their leaders. There are reports
of Christians being persecuted. The fearful take risks that cause drown-
ings in the sea; they risk starving to death in dangerous deserts. They
face the possibility of imprisonment for violating immigration laws; yet they
are running from oppression in government and violence inflicted by gangs,
drugs and abuse. The struggle by many due to the lack of good
leadership, both at home and abroad, is a mirror image of what we learned
through Jeremiah’s prophesy in our first reading today. Sadly, Jeremiah’s
prophesy is relevant in our time.
Our Lord, whose own family fled from Herod’s persecution, sees it all. We
must collaborate with God and do whatever He wants us to do in order to
heal us. In our second reading, Ephesians 2:13-18, St. Paul reminds us
that we have been brought together by the blood of Christ. He exhorts us
to follow the example of Christ in promoting peace and justice among the
people we relate to and people under our care.
So dear brothers and sisters, as we live our daily lives let us not create
barriers between each other and the economic, gender and racial distinc-
tions that readily divide us. Instead let’s work toward breaking down all
barriers between us; as Christ has done for us. This message of hope is
as significant today as it was thousands of years ago. And we could not
be reminded of it at a better time; now that we are passing again through
all forms of political and social crisis, including the greatest refugee migra-
tions that the world has witnessed. Let us thank God that He has provided
Christ as our good shepherd. Let us also pray that as our shepherd Jesus
will continue to bring us together and that we will always remember the
promise in today’s responsorial psalm, “The Lord is our shepherd; there is
nothing we shall want”. +
Stewardship
“Stewardship is a decision of the will not a feeling, although good feelings
often follow. We can’t wait for our attitudes regarding stewardship to
change our behavior. By changing our behavior our attitudes will change
to match the gospel way of life.” - EMERITUS EUGENE J. GERBER

Prayers of the Faithful
Sunday, July 22, 2018
Confident in God's love and endless compassion for all people, we
place our needs before him in faith.
That the Church may be faithful to its call to preach repentance and the
Good News of Jesus Christ to all people.
For the priests serving in the Diocese of Sacramento, that they will each
be shepherds according to the heart of Christ.
For all those called to the priesthood or consecrated life in the Diocese
of Sacramento, that each of them will hear the call of the Lord and follow
him.
That we may make wise choices in how we live as God’s stewards and
have the courage to turn away from foolish wants.
For those who govern us, that they may have the heart and mind of a
good shepherd, and keep the protection of human life as their first
priority.
That those who suffer injustice, discrimination or hardship because of
race or religion may deepen their faith in God and experience his protec-
tion.
That the sick may be comforted, strengthened, and healed.
That all who have died may experience the peace and life of Christ in the
heavenly kingdom.
