EventhisyearSISSAispreparingtowelcomeitsnewPhDstudents,whoareabouttosetoutontheiracademicjourney.Asinthepast,theWelcomeDayisanopportunitybothtowelcomethenewarrivalsandtogethertocelebrateandsharetheexperiencesofthosehavebeenstudyingandworkinghereforyears,throughpresentations,talksandawards.Therewillalsobethetraditionallectiomagistralis,thisyearheldbyDaanFrenkel,professoratCambridgeUniversity.Thecelebrationswillberoundedoffwithaconcertofthe“TriesteEarlyJazzOrchestra”.

OnDecember1st,theInternationalSchoolforAdvancedStudies(SISSA)inTriestewillholditsWelcomeDay,wherethenewstudentsarrivingfortheirfirstyearofPhDcourseareintroducedtotheSchool,theirseniorcolleagues,theSchool’sprofessorsandallthepersonnel.Asistradition,thecelebrationswillopenwithawelcomemessagebytheSISSADirectorStefanoRuffo,whowillpresenttheSchooltothenewarrivals.Then,themorningwillcontinuewithtalksbythestudentrepresentativesandpost-docsandbriefpresentationsofSISSAresearchandeducationprogrammesbyrepresentativesoftheteachingfaculty.Inaddition,therewillbeapresentationof“SISSAforSchools”,anongoingprojectwhereSISSAopensitsdoorstoschoolchildren,followedby,ataround10.45,theawardceremony:awardsforPhDandMaster’stheses,theBassoliprize,medalsforthepersonnelandtheSpecialStudentPrize.At11.00,DaanFrenkelwilldeliveralectureentitled“CountingtheUncountable:NumericalCalculationofGranularEntropy”.FrenkelisaDutchcomputationalphysicist,aprofessorattheDepartmentofChemistryoftheUniversityofCambridge,theauthorofalargenumberofpaperspublishedininternationaljournalsand,amongstothers,a(foreign)memberoftheAmericanNationalAcademyofSciences.HehasalsobeenamongtherecipientsoftheBoltzmannMedalandSpinozaPrize,aswellasofothermajorawards.Themorningwillendwithaconcertofthe“TriesteEarlyJazzOrchestra”whichwillstartat11.45.TheentireWelcomeDayisopentothepublicandthemajorityoftalkswillbeheldinEnglish.IMAGES:
