Sewage Treatment and Recycling Challenge
Challenge for conventional STP
include:
• Centralized nature of treatment
• With increase in Sewage generation,
Centralized plant have Zero scope of
capacity expansion
• Difficulty to meet existing norms due to
every increasing complexity of Sewage
• Increasing issue of Sludge
Management and disposal
• High foot print of conventional
technology, limiting scale of new plant
• Limited water reuse scope with poor
output quality
Why Decentralized Sewage Treatment seems difficult ?
• Conventional Technologies lime Activated Sludge process
were designed for Centralized solution.
• ASP is very high of foot print, energy usage , solid waste
generation and skilled manpower
• Decentralized plant start from an individual level, to single
house, a building complex and for whole community
• Old technologies cannot be scaled up
• High foot print prevents their use in densely populated
urban centres which are hot spot of sewage pollution
• Options like MBBR and FAB need high investment and
high level of technical expertise to generate consistent
water quality of reuse.
• Modular, Mobile and Package plant are a very high on
Capex
BIOFLOCS compared to conventional treatment plants
BIOFLOCS Conventional like ASP, MBBR,
FAB etc.Higher concentration of MLSS gives Better
treatment in less space
Lower MLSS concentration leads to high foot print
of treatment plants
Residence time (HRT) of sewage in reactor is low
due to high concentration of bacteria
Reactor have high residence time due to low
concentration of bacterial mass, increasing the
plant foot print and civil cost
Bacterial removal is very good, nearly 100 % Bacterial removal is very poor
The plant takes less start-up time compared to
MBBR as the bacterial growth is suspended
Attached bacterial growth (as in MBBR, FAB,
SAAF) requires longer time and high level of
expertise for operation and stabilization
Sludge generation is less due to high biomass
concentration
High sludge generation
Removal of nutrients like Ammonia, Nitrate and
phosphate is good
Removal of nutrients like Ammonia, Nitrate and
phosphate is poor
Operating cost of plant is at PAR with a properly
functioning conventional technology plant
Operating cost of (sub 100 KL) plant is in the
range of Rs. 12 – Rs. 20 per KL depending on the
operating condition of plant
New STP norms – A Challenge to conventional technology
It would be difficult to
meet the new STP
norms using
conventional methods,
without making the
plants more BIGGER
BIOFLOCS – Membrane based Sewage Treatment solution
• BIOFLOCS process is based on use
of Submerged membrane for solid
liquid separation.
• It belongs to Membrane
Bioreactor (MBR) family
• Low Footprint and high quality water
treatment are hallmark of Membrane
based BIOFLOCS treatment
• Design of BIOFLOCS is done to
carter Sewage Treatment
requirement of single family to full
fledge community.
How BIOFLOCS – Membrane solution works ?
• Hollow Fiber based filtration is at the heart of BIOFLOCS
Bundle of hollow fibre (making sufficient filtration area) is submerged in the bioreactor

How BIOFLOCS – Membrane solution works ?
• In the Bioreactor, clean water gets collected in the hollow fibre cavity, leaving the biomass outside
How BIOFLOCS – Membrane solution works ?
• Backwash is regularly applied to prevent clogging (fouling) of hollow fibre membrane
BIOFLOCS Advantage in Sewage Treatment
• High MLSS (6,000 – 12,000 mg/L) => low HRT => small reactor volume => small plant footprint
area
• Biomass separation is independent of settling; separation is via microfiltration or ultrafiltration.
• Biomass is completely retained, effluent TSS (< 1 mg/L) and turbidity (< 1 NTU) is very low.
• Due to microfiltration or ultrafiltration, BIOFLOCS provides a perfect physical disinfection.
Removals:
o 5-6 log bacteria
o 2-3 log viruses
o Complete removal of pathogenic protozoa such as the chlorine-resistant
Cryptosporidium and Giardia.
• Automated operation, operator requirements are reduced
• Due to elevated SRTs: less susceptible to problems associated with nitrification and toxic organics,
less biomass yield => less sludge
• Due to high MLSS, high loadings allowed
• Better SRT control since no escape of TSS as occasionally observed from secondary clarifiers
• Can also remove nitrogen and phosphorus with the addition of anaerobic and anoxic zones
BIOFLOCS Advantage in Sewage Treatment
• Extremely low plant footprint
• Simple construction makes for easy repair and
replacement
• Custom design and low capital and cost makes
BIOFLCOS installation in most difficult location
possible
• There is reduced demand for post treatment
chlorination
• Low sludge production compared to conventional
treatment process
• Generation of treated water quality ideal for Flushing
and other non-potable applications.
• Plants can be underground, over ground,
basement based etc.
