1 Grammar NotesThe Simple Past
FormRegular verbs: Base verb + -ed
Irregular verbs: Various forms (see the list on page 15)
FunctionThe simple past expresses a finished past action that occurred at a specific time in the past.
Time Markers
• yesterday
• the day before yesterday
• last (last week, last month, last year)
• ago (two days ago, three weeks ago)
• when / before / after + past verb
(when I was a child, before I went to school,
after I finished my homework)
Examples
• I woke up at 7:00 am yesterday.
• Last week, I watched a lot of TV.
• I ironed my clothes last night.
• I washed my face before I brushed my teeth.
