Case Study #1 Training Simulators on TurretLCTS-90
2
Client: CMI Defence
Quote from Paul Thonon, CEO CMI Defence: “A world Premiere, the close cooperation between CMI Defence and SILKAN opens the way
for a new generation of training simulators”
Highlights of SILKAN Solution: a modular product which can easily be configured to
reply to different levels of training simulation; training for generic turret techniques
and embedded simulation.
Objectives
The simulators are used for initial training and for maintaining the competence of the teams working on 90 mm turrets on armored vehicles. Instruction can work on both an individual and a squad basis, and this is possible on two types of simulators : virtual simulators in classrooms or in mobile shelters, in which the learning posts of students are constituted of tactile 3D interfaces that reproduce their environment; and embedded simulators that connect the instructors post to the turret, permitting the instructor to train the team at the post in the real turret. Offering powerful realism in armored scenarios, the TUTORTM Simulator enables the tank commander to use virtual tools for daily leader learning and skill sustainment regimens.

Client: CEA
Simulation of seals behavior is a hard task. It addresses complex physical phenomena such as elasto-visco-plastic and hyper-elastic
material behavior, large displacements and deformations, contact, thermo-mechanical coupling...
Highlights of SILKAN Solution: An innovative worflow-oriented all-in-one simulation
solution with : Development of evolutionary & dedicated interface with robust
detailed and coarse Models, Model Order Reduction & Surrogate Models,
parameterized Models, smart DoE, Optimization of complex Design and use of HPC.
Objectives
To develop a robust and friendly environment for the design of seals, numerical simulation
brings several benefits by reducing the number of necessary tests, saving time by automation
of the simulation process, reducing design costs, exploring new nonintuitive configurations,
ensuring robustness of the design...

Case Study #3 FIRE SIMULATION SOLUTION (FIRESIM)
4
Client: National Fire Academy
Built to accommodate Emergency and Firefighting Operation training needs, FIRESIM can be naturally expressed to model the
operating logic of phenomena, behaviors and general environments.
Highlights of SILKAN Solution: the solution provides many possibilities for civilian
responders and incident command stakeholders such as fire departments, emergency
responders and security organizations
Objectives
FIRESIM is an interactive or real time simulation of modular environments. Its modularity
allows the development of economical, evolving and multi-configurable simulation
solutions. Specific working conditions are accurately reproduced. The resulting simulation
system will be tailored to suit various needs such as training, planning and decision
support analyses....

Case Study #4 TEST BENCH FOR HELICOPTER MTR390 ENGINES
5
Client: French MoD, (AIA) in Bordeaux
SILKAN technology is now widely used in critical applications requiring a high level of confidence in the quality of the data transmitted such as
control command systems or real-time tests and simulation means for the sectors of Energy, Space or Aerospace.
Highlights of SILKAN Solution: SILKAN Arion 100 Technology is particularly suited to address
hard real-time issues. This communication enables deterministic data exchanges, precise
dating and integrity of data. This technology is now widely used in various critical
applications requiring a high level of confidence such as command and control systems or
real-time tests and simulation workbenches for Industry, Energy , Transportation or
Aerospace.
Objectives
To assist the AIA in its maintenance operations on turboprop , turbojet aircraft equipping the
French armed forces. The construction of this new and complex bench integrates various
technologies and skills as control command an regulation systems, infrastructure aspects
(management of engine fuel, air, high voltage, telephone systems, video transmission and IT) as
well as fire safety issues

Case Study #5 BRAKE UNIT FOR HELICOPTER
6
Client: Messier Bugatti Dowty, Safran Group
This project focuses on the braking system of an Helicopter. It is the first time SILKAN technology is incorporated into a system
which will actually fly.
Highlights of SILKAN Solution: SILKAN skills in embedded equipment allows us to
provide a robust solution with fewer parts, with less equipment parts and a DO254 B
level certification. With its proprietary DAL A DO-254 IP, SILKAN is in a position to
dramatically speed up critical design processes
Objectives
This solution integrates an electronic and mechanical assembly for converting the
movement of the helicopter brake unit into electrical information. The contract includes
the mechanical and electronic design, all the test and manufacturing benches and the
industrialization of the units.

Case Study #6 WESLAB, FOR WEAPON EFFECTS SIMULATION
7
Client: CMI Defence
Usually, weapon effect simulation are performed offline, as batch, CPU-intensive calculations. For the first time, accurate numerical
physics simulation is incorporated into an interactive virtual environment
Highlights of SILKAN Solution: Mixing skills in numerical and virtual simulation, SILKAN has
extended its TUTORTM platform for integrating a realistic analysis of the weapon effects.
User is then in a position to obtain quantitative assessment based on the capacities of
ammunitions and the characteristics of the targets in terms of material and structures ,
while maintaining a 3-D interactive and mission-oriented visualization.
Objectives
WESLAB is a software product able to simulate weapon effects on a target. Using detailed
specifications as well as fine modeling of physical phenomena involved, WESLAB aims to
analyze precisely the effects of the impact – penetration and blast of a shell on targets
such as armored vehicles or buildings. A precise control of the shooting conditions and a
clear visualization of the results are achieved through an ergonomic interface and a 3-D
representation of the virtual environment.

Case Study #7 DAMAGE ASSESSMENT IN COMPLEX INDUSTRIAL FACILITIES
Case Studies 8
Numerical simulation for industrial risk assessment.
Highlights of SILKAN Solution: As a civil adaptation of the WESLAB solution, this platform
imports existing data for faster model construction; generates detailed analysis at
different scales; runs automated and systematic exploration of possible incidents to
detect maximum impact of the event; enables the testing of contingency and recovery
plans and works at higher layers for jurisdictional level assessments.
Objectives
The solution integrates and visually represents various aspects of incident response, within
a complex plant environment, in a single, unified platform: Risks Management related to
fire & its related consequences; Damage Assessment & Prevention; Emergency & Rescue
Team Training and Exercise Support. It offers an environment that connects and unifies
the following points of view: 3-D solid model of the physical plant; logical control of plant
automation; physical orientation of the plant, assets, and the incident.
