Jalpan

(www.aventurate.com.mx).

Pinal de Amoles
The temperature starts to drop only two hours outside
of the city of Queretaro as you start to enter the forest.
After passing by the Puerta del Cielo area, you will find the
magical town of Pinal de Amoles. You should stroll around
the town and visit the Escanela River, it has extremely light
blue colored water. You can go to the Bridge of God and
end your journey in the majestic El Chuveje waterfalls,
which measure up to 35 meters (114 feet) tall. You can
rent a cabin here or camp out and enjoy a night in contact
with nature.
Jalpan
After one hour of travelling, the temperature rises again.
You will enter the low jungle and the magical town of
Jalpan de Serra, the epicenter of the Sierra Gorda. We
suggest you spend the night here; a good option is in Hotel
Misión Jalpan.
One of the greatest missionaries in Mexico, Fray Junípero
Serra, built the first mission of Santiago of Jalpan in 1751.
The façade of Jalpan, dedicated to the Apostle Santiago,
tells the story of the conquest of faith, and with good
reason: it was the first mission to include the “pames”
indigenous people into the vice-royal system after almost
two centuries of resistance.
Jalpan’s façade started a tradition in which the missions
in Sierra Gorda all portray stories of how the Christian
religion fused together with the ancient indigenous beliefs
of the area. It was thanks to these façades that the
missionaries were able to bring peace to this contentious
territory in only twelve years.
After you have visited la Misión and the town, take a ride
on ATVs around Jalpan River and the dam. You can be
picked up at your hotel to take this ride by the tourism
operator called Aventurate (www.aventurate.com.mx).

Landa de Matamoros y Arroyo Seco
Las siguientes misiones están enclavadas en poblaciones
pintorescas y tradicionales.

Landa of Matamoros and the Dry Stream
The next missions on the way are found in quaint and
traditional towns. Our first stop is in Our Lady of the Light
of Tancoyol, one hour from Jalpan. Its façade symbolizes
Mercy, it was built between 1760 and 1766.
Our journey continued to Landa of Matamoros, where you
can find the Saint Mary of the Waters of Landa mission, one
of the most ornate structures. It was finished in 1764 and
its façade symbolizes the City of God.

Misión de Tilaco
We continue to San Francisco Tilaco, it is the most beautiful
as a conventual ensemble. It was finished in 1762 and is
dedicated to Saint Francisco Assis. Tilaco’s front symbolizes
the naive faith. Its slim bell tower, open chapel, and its
portal distinguish it.
We recommend you end your day in the tropical jungle of
Arroyo Seco and that you spend the night in Hotel Hacienda

Conca
Go on the amazing expedition to Sotano de Barro (clay
basement), a 500-meter wide (1640 feet) and 450-meter
deep (1476 feet) abyss from which flocks of green macaws
and hawks emerge at dawn. You can afterwards visit the
Saint Miguel Conca mission, the smallest of them all,
finished in 1754. The figure that stands out is one of the
Holy Trinity and it represents the victory of faith.
Very close by, you can visit the Millennial Tree, it is a sabino
(cypress) that is considered the second most ancient tree
in Mexico and through which several springs pass. You can
start heading back to Queretaro after this visit and stop at
Las Adjuntas, the place where the Santa María River and
the Ayutla River meet and mix their different shades of
blue. You can take a refreshing swim here to beat off the
jungle heat and end your trip to Sierra Gorda reenergized.
