District Deputy ReminderSeptember 2012
Let us hear from you. Use the Supreme Council mail box for district deputies: [email protected].
New Council Development
One of the greatest accomplishments for any district
deputy is the formation of a new council. If you have a
potential new council in the works, strive to have it in-
stituted as soon as possible. Also, each state deputy
has been asked to identify one diocese in his jurisdic-
tion for a concentrated New Council Development ef-
fort. For more information contact your state deputy.
For more details on starting a new council, e-mail
[email protected]. or call Stephen Hinckley
at 203-752-4247.
Featured Programs
The Knights of Columbus Featured Programs initia-
tive runs in conjunction with the Surge. . .With Service
Program and its six specific program areas — Church,
Community, Council, Culture of Life, Family and
Youth. Meeting re-
quirements for a
featured program
listed for one
Surge program
area fills all four
activity require-
ments for that
area. More informa-
tion on each featured program may be found on the
Order’s website kofc.org. Featured programs that ful-
fill all requirements for the Columbian Award cate-
gories include:
Church — The featured program for the Church
category highlighted this month is the Refund Support
Vocations Program (RSVP). By participating in a
RSVP program for this fraternal year, a council fulfills
all Columbian Award requirements for the Church cat-
egory. (See RSVP article in this issue.)
Community — There are two featured programs,
Habitat for Humanity and the Global Wheelchair Mis-
sion. To meet Habitat for Humanity requirements, a
council must donate a minimum of $1,000 and 200
man-hours of service to a Habitat project. Visit
www.habitat.org for more information.
For $150, the Global Wheelchair Mission can pro-
vide a wheelchair to a person in need. In partnership
with the Knights of Columbus the mission has distrib-
uted more than 20,000 wheel-
chairs worldwide. To meet
requirements of this featured
program, a council must raise
the funds for one case of 100
wheelchairs to be distributed
by the Global Wheelchair Mis-
sion. More information is avail-
able at amwheelchair.org or,
in Canada cdnwheelchair.org.
Council — The featured
program for the Council pro-
gram category is Special Olympics. To satisfy all four
council activity requirements, a council must con-
tribute a minimum of $2,000 and 200 man-hours of
volunteer service in support of local/state Special
Olympics activities. For more information contact the
Special Olympics chairman in your jurisdiction.
Family — The featured program for the Family Ac-
tivities category is the Knights of Columbus Food for
Families program. To meet Food for Families fea-
tured program requirements a council must collect a
minimum of 1,000 pounds of
food to be donated to a parish
or community food bank as well
as provide at least 100 volun-
teer-hours of service collecting
and distributing food or prepar-
ing or serving meals to needy
people. Conducting a Food for
Families program earns full
credit for all requirements in the Family Activities cat-
egory. For more information, contact Jason Porrello
at 203-752-4571 or e-mail [email protected].
Culture of Life — A council can satisfy all require-
ments for the Culture of Life Activities category by

participating in either the
Knights of Columbus Ultra-
sound Initiative (kofc.org/ultra-
sound) or a local, regional or
national March for Life.
For the Ultrasound Initiative a
council must identify a Preg-
nancy Care Center that is certi-
fied to use and maintain an
ultrasound machine and complies with all regulations
of the Ultrasound Initiative. Then the council must
raise half the cost of the machine (the council finan-
cial obligation ranges from $3,000 to $30,000 de-
pending on the cost of the equipment). The Supreme
Council matches council funds.
The March for Life program requires that the coun-
cil must involve 100 council members/family mem-
bers/parishioners in a local, state or national March
for Life. For complete details of either program con-
tact William O’Brien at 203-752-4403 or e-mail

cases of coats —

Refund Support Vocations Program (RSVP)
Through the Knights of Columbus Refund Support
Vocations Program (RSVP), councils, assemblies
and Squires circles “adopt” one or more seminarians
or postulants providing them with financial assistance
and moral support in this featured program.
RSVP money is used by seminarians and those in
religious formation for personal expenses. But
Knights provide more than financial support. They
provide moral support too, by writing letters to the
“adoptee,” sponsoring dinners for them, inviting him
to join the Order and, most importantly, praying for
vocations.
Last year, financial help from 2,628 councils, as-
semblies and circles to future priests, sisters and
brothers, exceeded $3 million. Since 1981 the Order
has provided $53 million in aid through RSVP, help-
ing more than 80,000 men and women follow their
vocations.
Qualifying councils and assemblies receive a $100
refund for every $500 donated, up to a limit of $2,000
donated to an individual, while the refund for Squires
is $20 for every $100 donated. In the Philippines and
Mexico, councils and assemblies receive the equiva-
lent in local currency of $50 for every $250 donated.
Councils qualifying for the RSVP plaque (or sticker)
and receiving a refund meet all requirements of the
Church Activity category on the Columbian Award Ap-
plication form (#SP7). Note: Once a council receives
the RSVP plaque. Subsequently, for each year they
qualify, they receive a sticker to place on the plaque
(there are five spaces for stickers). Once those are
filled, a new plaque will be issued. For more details
on the RSVP program, visit www.kofc.org/vocations.
Coats for Kids
It may be warm now,
but soon many children
in need will face the cold
winds and falling tem-
peratures of winter with-
out a warm coat.
Providing them with one
is the goal of Coats for
Kids, a Knights of
Columbus featured pro-
gram.
Encourage your coun-
cils to participate in the
intitiative and remind
them that by success-
fully holding a Coats for
Kids program, they fill all
requirements — pur-
chasing and distributing at least eight cases of coats
(12 coats per case) — they meet all requirements for
the Youth Category on the Columbian Award Applica-
tion (#SP7).
State, district and local councils may purchase new,
high-quality winter coats for boys (sizes 8-18) and
girls (sizes 7-16) through the Supreme Council for
$16.25 per coat plus shipping by using the Coats for
Kids order form which may be found on
www.Kofc.org/coats.

are randomly selected from the “Family of the Month”
nominees sent to the Supreme Council office. The
winners receive a beautiful Holy Family icon. The
Family of the Month nomination form (#1993A) may
found in the Council Report Forms Booklet (#1436)
