Editors’ note... At long last we’ve had some lovely weather before the schools go back and Autumn arrives. Lets hope it lasts a bit longer!
Several village events take place right at the begin-ning of September, as advertised in the August issue and again on this page, so be sure to go to them. There’s no Parish News this month as no meeting was held during August but most of the other regular articles can be found throughout this newsletter.

View from the Pew! We begin September with our ever popular Flower Festival on 1st and 2nd, this year dedicated to Sport.
As well as the usual floral displays, there will be conducted tours of the church at hourly intervals by our good friend David Paul who compiled our Church Guide. These will be interspersed with live musical interludes and tea and cakes will be available to sustain you.
Trips up the Tower will be another attrac-tion. Donation of cakes to cut and serve would be most welcome. Please contact Frances 811727 or Hazel 810326 and let us know what you can bring. Songs of Praise will close the Festival on Sunday at 4.30. You may also like to visit the village hall that weekend to see the Art Exhibition by local painters.
Our services will follow the usual pattern throughout September but the 29th being the fifth Sunday there will be no service at Grafham. However, Bishop John Flack will take his retirement Eucharist at 10 am at Nassington near Oundle and all are welcome to attend.
On the first Sunday in October, the 7th, we will have our traditional Harvest Festival with
all the familiar harvest hymns. The church will be decorated by members of the Flower Club and the service is followed by lunch. Everyone is wel-come to this very pleasant event in the church's calendar when we give thanks for all good gifts around us.
The wedding of Amie and Peter took place on 28th July and we were all glad that the sun shone for the happy couple. We wish them God's blessings on their future life together.
We are grateful to Mel, Pete and Gor-don who have been standing in with cutting the grass in the churchyard while David is receiving his treatment. Please remember him in your prayers. We would still like to hear from anyone who is willing to help us with jobs in and around the church. Please contact Peter El-liott on 810550 or email: [email protected]
Our Restoration Fund continues to grow. To date we have received £3,190 in donations plus a total of £77 in monthly standing orders. We truly appreciate the thoughtful response we have had to our appeal so far. Donations may be made at any time. Please contact Hazel if you have mislaid your form and would like another. We expect to hear soon from English Heritage whether our application has passed the first stage and we will keep readers informed.

Dorks Village Shop on Breach Road, Grafham Sam Malt
These old photos show a shop at No.35 Breach Road, Grafham and an invoice dated 1902. The shop and coal business owned by the Dorks family served our community in the late 1800s through to the 1900s. The sign above the shop door indicates James Dorks was the proprietor at that time. The invoice to Mr Brown, who was the Grafham Church warden, shows 5 shillings for coke for the church stove. I don’t know when the shop closed.

Huntingdon Stabbing - Men Sentenced A man and a teenager have been jailed for their in-volvement in a stabbing in Huntingdon.
The incident happened at around 3.30am on 12th Feb-ruary in Nene Road as the 22-year-old victim walked home.
A group of men approached him and asked if he had a cigarette. He said he had not and was then attacked and left with three stab injuries. The victim fled to a friend’s home where an ambulance was called. He suffered a punctured lung.
The adult attacker, 22yrs old, of Nene Road Hunting-don pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm at a previous hearing and was jailed for two years and eight months.
The teenager, 17yrs, of Beaton Crescent, Huntingdon pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon at a previous hear-ing. He was jailed for four years for the assault charge plus three years extended licence and two years, to run concurrently, for possessing an offensive weapon. They were sentenced on 17th August at Huntingdon Crown Court.
DC Liz Cooper said: "This was a nasty and unprovoked attack on an innocent member of the public and I hope these sentences sends out a strong message about the seriousness of this type of crime.”

Grafham Cricket Club It is often said, that winning the toss often wins the game, especially when the condition of the pitch or the weath-er are big factors in that winning. The home match against the Prime Minis-ters, had the prelude of a short sharp heavy shower, followed by a warming sun that dried the shower deluged bat-ting track. Grafham lost the toss; were put into bat and were soon put to the sword, with Gareth Knowles (17) and Josh Owen (9) raising any resistance. Grafham were all out for 53.
The Prime Ministers reply was steady; the only wicket to fall was the Prime Ministers’s captain who could not be-lieve the movement Adi Love achieved in rounding his orthodox forward defensive stroke and hitting his wick-ets. The Prime Ministers scored the winning run on the first ball of the 16th over; winning the game by 9 wickets.
The following week, also at home Grafham faced the league leaders; The Aryans. Grafham took to the field with 10 men; several key players were on holiday. The Aryans opened the batting, with Adie Love and Tom Chester bowling well, and keeping the Aryans scoring rate low and slow. A steady fall of Aryan wickets meant that the Aryans never really developed a lasting partner-ship. The main stay of the Aryan innings was S Safi who scored 51 runs. Tom Chester finished on 7 overs 4 maid-ens 30runs for 5 wkts; Adi Love 10 overs 1 maiden 40runs 2 wkts, and Matt Chester 4 Overs 25 runs for 2 wkts. The Aryans were all out for 139 runs.
Grafham started well with Jack Sene opening, scoring 28, with Colin Grundy 14; and Tom Chester 19, along with some prolific wide bowling gave Grafham a basis to achieve the Aryan total, but the optimism faded as Grafham’s last man was out 8 runs short of the Aryan total.
The final home game of the season is on :-

Getting Grafham Connected We promised that we'd keep you updated on progress on the Con-necting Cambridgeshire initiative.
We're delighted to report that by 10th August, almost 50% of the homes in Grafham had registered. This is a fantastic achievement, but it is important that we continue this progress. Some villages in Cambridgeshire are now close to 90% registration!
So, if you haven’t already done so, please fill in the form at the Cambridgeshire County Council website (http://www.connectingcambridgeshire.co.uk/). It takes no more than two minutes and there is absolutely no further obligation. Or you can fill out the form that was posted through your door recently and hand that into either of the village broadband champions Alastair Brydon or Chris Bulow.

Church Cleaning If you’d like to help with church cleaning we would be most grateful. Two members of our team are a little overloaded. Heating oil and gas – getting the right measure At the time of writing we’re having a mini heatwave, so you might not thank me for turning your thoughts to the winter months! But sometimes time flies far more quick-ly than we like, and in our British climate who knows how early a cold snap will arrive. Some of you may therefore be considering buying in your fuel for those cold months.
In Cambridgeshire, Trading Standards work closely with heating oil and bulk gas suppliers to help them ensure their tankers are measuring and dispensing fuel accu-rately. This helps to ensure that you, the customer, can be sure you’re getting what you’ve paid for. When it comes to bottled gas, local Trading Standards services check the meters at the bottling plants to ensure they are accurate. We provide support for businesses to make it easier for them to meet regulations and provide good customer service too.
However, for added peace of mind there are a few checks you can make yourself, at the time of delivery, to ensure you are getting the fuel you paid for.
Heating oil and bulk gas
On most tankers there is an automatic ticket printer that records and prints the quantity of fuel dispensed into your tank. You should be given a copy of this delivery ticket. If you want to make absolutely sure it is correct, you can take the following steps:
• For heating oil, observe the fuel being dispensed from start to finish. (For safety reasons we do not ad-vise this for bulk gas).
• Inspect the ticket before it is put in the printer and
before the fuel is dispensed to make sure it is yours and that it remains in place until it is printed again on com-pletion.
• When the ticket is inserted, make sure the meter shows ‘zero’.
At the end of the delivery, check the reading on the me-ter is the same as on your ticket.
A small number of oil tankers still use a dipstick to measure fuel being dispensed. This is harder for you to check as your own dipstick or sight tube may not be as accurate.
Bottled gas
Bottled gas is sold by the weight of its contents which should be clearly marked on the cylinder. If you want to be sure that you have received the correct amount of gas, you can take the following steps:
• Check the amount marked on the cylinders adds up
to the amount on the delivery note and both match the amount ordered.
Where fitted, check the plastic seals are in place and that the essential safety information is stamped or painted on the side.
If you have concerns or issues with any products that you have purchased, you can contact our partner, Citi-zens Advice Consumer Service, on 08454 04

LAWN CARE IN SEPTEMBER • Scarify lawn and overseed. Remove the thatch, the dead and the weak grass, and
open up the surface to allow the lawn to breathe and overseed with a quality grass seed.
• Aerate lawn. Soil compaction is a frequent cause of turf deterioration and moss invasion; this is the process whereby 10 – 15cm (4-6 ”) holes are “mechanically punched” in to the lawn allowing air in to the roots of the grass encouraging a more vigorous and greener lawn.
• Combine an Autumn feed with an early moss control. Our fertiliser is high in phosphate and potassium with additional Iron for that dark green look and moss prevention.
• Raise cutting height to 1 ½ inches (3.5-4 cm)
