Dear Parishioners

What Can Advent Mean for You?

Each year the Church offers us this season of Advent. The prayers are o en about the “coming “ of Jesus and the culture around us

clearly points to Christmas. So, Advent can feel like a me of remembering the coming of Jesus at Christmas, but not par cularly helpful for right here and now.

A deeper look can allow Advent to be about preparing your heart for Jesus to come to you in mately during these four weeks. The explora on - the ac vity and the work of Advent- can be about discovering where you need Jesus to come into your life. This is the process of examining the places in your heart where Jesus is missing. It is an opportunity to feel his absence, to feel the spiritual emp ness or perhaps, the shallowness of certain places in our hearts. The beginning of the Advent experience is to allow yourself to enter into an experience of missing something/someone and of longing for something/someone to replace it.

To pray “Come, Lord Jesus” without knowing what or why I am asking may ul mately not be the most frui ul way to pray! One way to help ourselves is to be more concrete and specific. For example, we can ask ourselves: What is feeling “empty” in me? Where do I feel I’ve not let Jesus into my heart? Into what pain, loneliness, fear or anger have I not invited him?”

I can begin to feel a longing. If I can let myself sense that I’m not going to be happy living with resentment or sadness, I can imagine happiness that comes from welcoming Jesus into those parts of my life where I need him, where he brings renewal, comfort and peace.

During these early weeks of Advent, as I hear Isaiah’s readings and their promises, I can begin to say “Come, Lord Jesus” in a new way - with genuine hope, expecta on, with deep desire and longing. When our desire meets God’s desire for us, something we call “grace” happens. The gi is given where we may be most recep ve to receive it.

Our desire for Jesus to fill our hearts will help us welcome him as Mary and Joseph did with trust and hope. “Come, Lord Jesus, Come!” Father Forcier

SAINT AUGUSTINE SCHOOL The Pre-K 3 class prepared a Thanksgiving dinner for their classmates and rela ves. They gave thanks for each other and for the abundance of food present at their table. Grade 4 put on the “First Thanksgiving Play.” The children were enthusias c and knew their characters well. The real feeling of Thanksgiving radiated through the school with acts of kindness and generosity. On Tuesday, the last day before the Thanksgiving break, the en re school par cipated in a Prayer service to reinforce the value of giving thanks. Thank you to both Father Forcier and Father Brice for sharing the experience with us.

Spotlight on Ms. Emily Fox Ms. Fox began teaching middle school math last year during Mrs. Fera’s absence. She did an excellent job of teaching math, rela ng to the students, and was good at differen a ng instruc on to meet the needs of all students. When her long term posi on was completed, we were happy to see Mrs. Fera return, but we did not want to lose Ms. Fox as part of our school family. Ms. Fox stayed on as the grade-6 math teacher and resource teacher. The resource teacher entails working the Response to Interven on and resource programs. Ms. Fox works with students who need interven on because they may have a gap in skills or they may be working below grade level. The resource part of her posi on requires that she work with students who have an Individual Educa onal Plan. Already we can see students progressing at a steady rate and showing growth in math and reading. We are blessed to have Ms. Fox as part of our school community.
