Learning and Living Our Catholic FaithMy dear Brothers and Sisters rejoicing in Jesus,
Today we celebrate the Ascension of the Lord and next Sunday we'll celebrate Pentecost. Today we recall that forty days after he rose from the dead, the Lord Jesus ascended, that is went up to Heaven, commanding the Apostles to go and baptize all, teaching them everything he had taught them in their time together, and also promising to be with them until the end of time. “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”" (Mt 28: 18-20)
And yet Jesus also had given them - and us - all seven Sacraments, including the ordaining of the Apostles as the first Bishops and the gift of the Eucharist, both at the Last Supper. As Jesus ascended, he and the Apostles both knew he was still with them - in the Sacraments and in a profoundly abiding way in the Eucharist which he had given them the power and the authority to celebrate in the Holy Mass. To this day we have not exhausted the depths of this great mystery of Christ's love.
Today we rejoice in a particular way because it's the second Sunday in a row that we've been able to distribute Holy Communion here at St Mary's. We still look forward to the day soon when we can be together at Mass, but I am delighted, along with the other priests here to be able to offer Jesus in the Eucharist to you, to be able to offer you the Bread of Life, the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus so that you might have eternal life, God's life, in you! That you might be nourished by him for strength against temptation, that you might be nourished by him to live your vocation in faithfulness and love, according to his plan - which can include sacrifice for fidelity to one another and His law of love. That together we might journey to Heaven!
These times are a gift to us in different and unexpected ways, having more time together being one that's often mentioned. One I am thinking much about, is that all around the world in the last number of weeks Catholic Priests have been celebrating Mass without their flocks; it has been just so strange to experience your physical absence. While the Mass was being offered and its fruits being applied by Our Lord according to his intentions and purposes, it still has been just so unusual to experience and think about. The world not able to attend Mass. That's over one billion Catholics unable to attend Mass.
While many are taking the opportunity to watch livestream Masses and praying the fruitful and time-honored Act of Spiritual Communion, in some ways I feel like we are living in the times of the early Church. It's like we're starting all over again. The Gospel and the Eucharist being proclaimed and celebrated as if for the first time after Jesus rose from the dead, ascended into Heaven and sent the Holy Spirit into the world at Pentecost. To me it's as if our Lord God is offering us a new beginning, a kind of very comprehensive spiritual reboot - or better, rebirth. And this is being offered to the entire world. A blessed moment of "Nunc Coepi!" - "Begin Again!"
My dear, dear Parish Family, I ask you to take some time to think about this, to ponder it, to pray about - to speak to the Lord Jesus and Mama Mary about it...Lord are you inviting me to begin again? What gift are you giving me in this invitation, this call to start over, this opportunity, Lord to hear you as if for the first time, and this possibility of the conversion of my heart and my entire life to you and your priorities? Lord, what really matters to you? Am I living the gift, responsibility and sacrifice that you commanded the Apostles to go and share with the world as you ascended into Heaven and yet remained with us, and am I being a witness, an apostle of all of this myself?
My dear Brothers and Sisters, I ask myself these questions of myself too.God love you! - Fr Jeremy OMV
The Apostles soon began celebrating Mass after the Ascension and PentecostOur 2nd collection
NEXT weekend will be for the Annual Catholic Services Appeal (ACSA) As is our parish custom, a Memorial Day Mass will be offered via

THE ASCENSION OF THE LORDFocus: God makes himself known to us.
Knowing God in a way that brings eternal life is no casual acquaintance, but an intimate friendship. When we know someone as a friend, we know likes and dislikes, character and personality. God knows us intimately and, amazingly, desires to be known, and makes himself known to those created in his image.
In the first reading, after Jesus’ Ascension, the disciples went to the upper room and devoted themselves to prayer. In Peter’s Epistle, he encourages the beloved community to rejoice in persecution; privileged to suffer with Christ, they will also glorify God. In John’s Gospel, Jesus, nearing the end of his earthly life, prays for his followers who remain in the world.

“The Language of Faith”171. The Church, "the pillar and bulwark of the truth", faithfully guards "the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints". She guards the memory of Christ's words; it is she who from generation to generation hands on the apostles' confession of faith.57 As a mother who teaches her children to speak and so to understand and communicate, the Church our Mother teaches us the language of faith in order to introduce us to the understanding and the life of faith.
