REFLECTION ON THE WORD OF GOD Today we hear how Abram encounters Melchizedek, “king of Salem . . . and a

priest of God Most High” (Genesis 14:18). Melchizedek appears nowhere else in

scripture, but is nonetheless significant. Psalm 110 declares of the great King David, “You are a priest forever, in the line of Melchizedek,” a description later given (in the letter to the Hebrews) to Christ as High Priest. Early Christians saw in Melchizedek’s bread and wine the bread and wine of the Eucharist; Paul’s account of the Last Supper (in today’s second reading) is the oldest one in scripture. In the Gospel, Luke describes Je-sus providing bread for a crowd in words similar to Paul’s, words still used by the Church: Jesus takes bread, gives thanks, breaks it. Together, these three readings reveal how Christian priesthood, Christ’s Real Pres-ence, and the call to serve those in need are all found in the gift of the Eucharist.

DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME We are familiar with the instructions that Jesus gives his disciples at the Last Supper. But what exactly is it that we are to do in remembrance of Jesus? One answer focuses on the “institution narrative” found in the Eucharistic Prayers: we are to consecrate the bread and wine, changing them, by the power of the Holy Spirit, into the Body and Blood of Christ. This is true; but let’s think about what it takes to actually do this, as the Church has done for almost two thousand years: We are to remember Jesus—to remember Jesus, the Word of God in human form. To do this, we need

that other word of God, given in a different form: the words of the scriptures. We need to assemble to do this. The Last Supper is a communal meal with Jesus. In his letter to the Co-

rinthians, Paul describes actions done within a group, actions that began with that communal meal with Jesus. We gather as today’s disciples and continue that group activity in our assemblies.

We need to find a way to assemble with some degree of order. We need leaders. We need preachers to preach the Word, we need presiders to repeat the actions of Jesus, persons who are “ordered”—ordained—for preaching and for the consecration of the bread and wine.

CHURCH, EUCHARIST, AND THOSE IN NEED There is a saying: “The Church makes the Eucharist, and the Eucharist makes the Church.” In the Eucha-ristic celebration, we find Christ truly present in the consecrated bread and wine. We also find him in the as-sembly, the scriptures, and the preacher-presider—everything we do to “do this,” and in doing “this,” we be-come the Body of Christ. Our Eucharistic remembrance of Jesus is a living sacramental memory that trans-forms us, too. We receive Communion to live in communion with Christ and one another, to become the “real presence” of Christ in the world. ý đề cập đến một lớp

nhân vật mà độc giả

thƣờng ít chú ý: đó

là những người láng

giềng của gia đình Da-ca

-ri-a. Niềm vui không chỉ

gói kín trong gia đình này mà còn lan tỏa sang những ngƣời

láng giềng. Khi mô tả những ngƣời láng giềng ―kinh sợ,‖

Lu-ca không có ý nói họ bị thất thần vì một tai hoạ kinh

hoàng nào đó. Ở đây thánh Lu-ca dùng kiểu nói trong Cựu

Ƣớc diễn tả tâm trạng choáng ngợp trƣớc những “điềm

thiêng dấu lạ” là dấu chỉ sự hiện diện và can thiệp của

Thiên Chúa. Những ngƣời láng giềng “kinh sợ” vì cảm kích

trước ân phúc quá lớn lao và rõ ràng mà Thiên Chúa đang

thực hiện nơi gia đình này.

LỜI TỪ GIÃ

Kính thƣa cộng đoàn thánh Giuse, giáo xứ St. Barbara

Cuộc đời gồm nhiều chuyến đi...

Kể từ khi chuyển địa phận từ Chicago sang địa phận

Orange, tôi đã đến và đi nhiều chặng đƣờng.

Năm 2005 đến 2006 ở St Angela Merici, Brea;

rồi 2006 đến 2010 ở St. Columban;

rồi 2010 đến 2015 ở Trung Tâm Công Giáo;

và 2015 đến 2019 ở St. Barbara.

Quả đúng là cuộc hành trình của đời linh mục có

nhiều trạm dừng chân, rồi lại lên đƣờng ra đi.

Giống nhƣ lời ca của bài Tạ Ơn:

“Dù đến rồi đi tôi cũng xin tạ ơn người, tạ ơn đời, tạ

ơn ai đã đưa tôi về chốn này, tôi xây mãi cuộc vui”.

Tạ ơn Chúa đã ban cho tôi cơ hội và sức khỏe để

phục vụ quý ông bà anh chị em. Tạ ơn cộng đoàn đã

cùng đồng hành, cộng tác, và nâng đỡ tôi

chu toàn sứ vụ mà bề trên trao phó.

Trƣớc khi đi đến một nhiệm sở mới,

tôi cũng xin cộng đoàn thứ lỗi nếu có thiếu xót,

hoặc nói gì hay làm gì mất lòng ai.

Vì tôi biết mình không thể làm vừa lòng mọi ngƣời.

Xin cộng đoàn tiếp tục cầu nguyện cho tôi trong

nhiệm sở mới là giáo xứ Đức Mẹ La Vang, kề cận

giáo xứ St. Barbara. Thế nào cũng có dip gặp quý ông

bà anh chị em để ―chào nhau giữa con đƣờng‖!

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Perú tiene más de 3000 fiestas cada año, normal-mente en torno al santo patrón de algún pueblo. La celebración de Corpus Christi es celebrada en todo el país. Pero es más llamativa en Cusco. Durante el día se escucha el repique de María Angola, la campana más grande de todo Perú, que existe desde el siglo XVI. La celebración incluye una procesión con quince santos y vírgenes del siglo XVII, que vienen desde sus santuarios hasta la barroca Catedral de Cusco para honrar el Cuerpo de Jesús. Estas imágenes son cargadas por la plaza de armas antes de llegar a la catedral donde se quedarán hasta el octavo día. Se-gún los peruanos los santos y vírgenes pasan las sie-te noches platicando con el Señor de los temblores, bromeando y planificando el año que viene para sus parroquias. El último día los santos y vírgenes regre-san a sus santuarios con otra procesión. Estas dos procesiones nos recuerdan que por mucho que los latinoamericanos amemos y venere-mos a los santos y vírgenes reconocemos que tanto ellos como nosotros están al servicio de Cristo Jesús. —Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
