• This map includes recommendations of popular gravel routes in the Chequamegon Area. There are many more routes out there if you wish to explore on your own.
• Routes include a variety of surfaces including small amounts of paved roads. Some gravel routes may require a mountain bike or fat bike. These are noted in the route descriptions.
• Camping is available throughout the region at National Forest, County and some private campgrounds. Dispersed camping is also permitted on National Forest and County Forest lands.
• Food and lodging are available in most communities along or near these routes. Bike sales and services are available in Ashland, Bayfield, Cable, and Hayward.
• Gravel routes are not specifically marked, except with traditional Forest Service, brown & light yellow wooden road numbers, or more typical town road signs. Most intersections should be marked.
• Many routes are considered town roads and all applicable traffic regulations apply.
• Some routes take you through very remote areas with no services, so be prepared.
• Cell phone coverage may be limited in some areas. Verizon is generally the most reliable carrier. If you need to get a call out, it may help to ride or hike to a higher point.
• Several routes pass by federally designated wilderness areas where bikes are prohibited. Please respect closures and all private property.

CABLE Starting Point : CAMBA Cable Trailhead-Town of Cable Municipal Parking C1 - 12 miles with 626 feet of climbing and some sustained climbing and a few steep hills, especially on Randysek Road and Timber Trail. C2 - 25 miles with 1,437 feet of climbing and a few steep hills on Timber Trail and Randysek Road. Predominately gravel with short sections of pavement. C3 - 31 miles with 1,700 feet of climbing including some long climbs. Short stretches on quiet pavement. Some of the gravel can be sandy and rough. Approaching Seeley you will ride a couple of miles on the railroad grade, which is also an ATV trail - please exercise caution. On routes C2 & C3, check out the site of the former Camp Smith Lake CCC Camp on Telemark Rd. near Camp Smith Lake. Several building foundations can still be seen from the road or via a short walk.
HAYWARD/SEELEY Starting Point : New Moon Bike Shop, Hayward
Alternate Starting Point : Sawmill Saloon, Seeley
All distances based on Hayward start. HS1 - 25 miles with 439 feet of climbing. This easy route contains a combination of gravel and pavement that starts on an abandoned railroad grade and heads toward the KOA Campground. Use the railroad grade to avoid riding on Hwy 63. You will ride along and cross the Namekagon River and enjoy great views of the east side of Nelson Lake. HS2 - 33 miles with 833 feet of climbing. This moderate route extends Route HS1 with sections of pavement, though most of the roads are very quiet. You will cross the Namekagon River a couple times and a enjoy great views of Nelson Lake. Some sections of Tagalder and Phipps Fire Lane can get sandy when it is dry. A gravel bike with wider tires or a mountain bike would be ideal for this route. Après’ ride, stop by New Moon and have a beer or wine on their outdoor deck. HS3 - 38 miles - Includes the perimeter of HS1 & 2 and extends to the northeast into hilly Birkie Country. Pass near the Birkie Cty OO Trailhead and the Samuel Johnson Outdoor Center just a mile to the east on Cty OO – water, vending machines, restrooms available. Long gradual climbs and fun extended descents. Check out ROAM Adventure Basecamp on Janet Rd. and swing into the iconic Sawmill Saloon for a burger, pizza or cold beer. The Sawmill Saloon is a local favorite for a burger or pizza and a beer.
MOOSE LAKE AREA
Starting Point : Intersection of Hwy 77 East and FR 174 between Hayward and Clam Lake. There is no trailhead, place of business or other facility. M1 - 14 miles with 377 feet of climbing. This is an easy “lollipop” loop and is primarily gravel. You will enjoy an amazing view from a wooden bridge as you cross the West Fork of the Chippewa River. M2 - 25 miles with 754 feet of climbing. Ride deep into the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest on this primarily easy gravel route and cross several rivers and three wooden bridges. There are two campgrounds in the area - Black Lake and Moose Lake. Both are about a mile off the main route. There are no services within this route so be prepared. M3 - 30 miles with 935 feet of climbing. This easy primarily gravel route crosses several rivers and passes near the Black Lake and Moose Lake Campgrounds and a former CCC Camp along Forest Road 164. Look for the two chimneys that are just off the road. This is all that remains of the former camp. There are no services along this route. M4 - 48 miles with 1,007 feet of climbing. This route is relatively flat and mostly easy gravel with small sections of quiet blacktop. You will cross several rivers on wooden bridges and ride near the Moose Lake and Black Lake Campgrounds as well the former CCC Camp. This route is very remote but you will pass near Clam Lake towards the end of the ride (off Hwy GG). On all Moose Lake Area routes, keep an eye out for elk. This is prime elk territory - there is a good chance you will see one. If you’re looking for a respite and a tasty gelato or other snack, consider swinging by the Farmstead Creamery off FR 164, just a short ride or drive from the starting point of all routes.
NAMAKAGON Starting Point : CAMBA Namakagon Town Hall Trailhead N1 - 17 miles with 928 feet of climbing. Mostly gravel with short sections of quiet pavement. The gravel on this route is pretty smooth and has rolling terrain. The Clam Lake elk herd can often be seen on the eastern side of this loop, especially along Forest Road 204. There are no services along this route. N2 - 36 miles with 1,328 feet of climbing. Primarily smooth gravel with short sections of quiet pavement and some steep hills on Snake Trail Road. You will pass dozens of beautiful lakes on this ride and the access trail (no bikes) to the Swedish Settlement (a two-mile hike off the main road). Read about the history of this area at the trailhead, which intersects with Old Grade Road along the North Country Trail. There are no services along this route so be prepared. N2 - 5 mile linear route on high quality gravel road through elk country linking Namakagon Cluster gravel routes with Moose Lake Area routes.
