Shagaya Initiative
Phase II: 1,200MW by the Oil Sector
The oil sector in Kuwait decided to secure 15% of
its electricity demand from RE sources by 2020,
that is equivalent to 2,500 GWh/years.
11
Shagaya Initiative
Phase III – Part 1: 1,000MW by the private sector
Investment opportunity for the private sector
design-built-operate RE power plants against
long term purchase agreement (IPP). Initial
package will include:
- 550 MW PV
- 300 MW CSP
- 150 MW Wind
Up-on the learning curve the size of remaining
parts of Phase III will be decided…
12
Distributed Generation
1,000 MW Roof-Tops
To generate part of consumer’s demand from
locally generated electricity from roof-tops
including:
- Residential Properties
- Schools
- Government Buildings
- Commercial Buildings
- Any available spaces within the city….
More than 20 MW PV already in operation with
expected 500 MW of PV to be installed by 2019.
13
Closing Remarks
1. Oil and Gas will remain the global predominant sources of energy,
2. Kuwait is and will remain energy-intensive country with high energy security
challenges,
3. Renewable energy technologies mainly solar and wind will play a key role
to complement not to compete with conventional sources of energy.
4. National optimized domestic energy portfolio can be developed to sustain future
supply of energy,
5. Solar and wind energy production match peak demand
