THE LENTEN RITUALS OF THE
RCIA PROCESS
Lent begins a very special time for those par-
ticipating in the RCIA process, as what we call the
period of Purification and Enlightenment starts the
first Sunday of Lent, March 1st.
On this Sunday we celebrate the Rite of Send-
ing. Our catechumens (those not yet baptized), Gabi
Castillo, Ahrianna Canales, Trynity Canales, and
Brieanna Smead, and our Candidates for Full Com-
munion (those who are already baptized Christians
and who will be confirmed and receive Holy Com-
munion), Jennfer Braithwood and Richard Swanson,
will be blessed and recognized by the parish. This af-
ternoon at Immaculate Conception they will be re-
ceived and blessed by Archbishop Schnurr.
Those participating publicly in the RCIA pro-
cess remind us of how very much we ourselves need
to repent, to return to God, to give to others, and to
strive for greater holiness in our own lives. Lent is a
time to prepare ourselves spiritually to celebrate the
paschal mystery. We spend Lent “thirsting” for the
waters of Baptism; this is true whether you are antici-
pating baptism or have already been baptized.
So, although the rituals we will see in the next
four weeks are directed specifically towards the Elect
(those not yet baptized), and the Candidates for Full
Communion, they are really meant for all of us.
In the weeks ahead we will celebrate both the
Penitential Rite, for our Candidates for Full Commun-
ion, as well as the Rites of Scrutiny, which are specifi-
cally intended for the Elect. More on those rites in
future weeks!
