Foryearswehavebroughttherestorationworkofindividualsandorganizationstoourreaders.Thisisthe"BlessedUnrest"thatPaulHawkensoeloquentlydescribedin2007whenhespokeofamassiveundergroundmovementthatoftengoesunnoticedbymedia,governments,andthepublic.

CountlesspeoplearoundtheworldareworkingtopreserveandrestoretheEarth.Forexample,SustainableHarvestInternationalpartnerswithfarmersinHonduras,Belize,andPanamatoimprovesustainablefarmingpracticesandthelivelihoodsoffarmersandtheirfamilies.

Nextspring,we'llbringyouaconferencethatisrootedinBlessedUnrest.We'llcelebratethecapacityofhumanstobecatalystsforlife-sustainingchange,andhowthishasbeenintheworksforyears-offthemainstreamradar-inaddressingecosystemdegradationandglobalwarming.Youcanreadmoreabouttheconferencebelow.

Farmersoutwestarebecomingincreasinglyawareoftheclimateconditionsthatthreatentheircropsandlivelihoods.Recentcatastrophicfloodinghasgivenmanytheincentivetochangetheircurrentfarmingpractices.MattRussell,afifth-generationfarmerinIowawhorunsalivestockfarmwithhishusbandistryingtomobilizefarmerstopubliclyspeakaboutagricultureasaneffectiveclimatechangesolution.RussellalsodirectstheIowabranchofInterfaithPowerandLight,anon-profitthatpromotesareligiousresponsetoglobalwarming.

RanchersinthenorthernGreatPlainsarerestoringprairiepasture,landwhoseoriginalnativevegetationwasstrippedofftogrowcrops.Thisrestorationallowsthelandtoretainmorewater,andthesoiltosequestermorecarbon.

Whenranchersrestoretheirpastureland,theyalsoseetheirprofitsriseastheycreatebetterfeed;thisallowsthemtobrandandselltheirbeefdirectlytoconsumers,ortoprofitthroughecotourism.

MeetPaulaPhipps,AssociateDirectorofBio4ClimatePaulajoinedtheteamin2014aftersheattendedBio4Climate'sveryfirstconference."Itwasaseminalconferencethatarticulatedwhatothergroupsweretalkingabout,butdiditinawaythatmadepeoplewanttotakeaction",shesays.Shedescribeshow,likemanypeople,shecametotheconferencefeelingfullofdespair,butcameawayfeelinghopeful."IrealizedthatBio4ClimatewaswhatIwantedtoputmyenergyinto.Toworkwithpeoplewhoactuallyfacedhowseriousthesituationis,yetremainhopeful.Andtolearnsomuchabouthowtheplanetworksandunderstandthattherearewayswecanworkwithittomakeithealthyagain."

Onanygivenday,PaulahandlesseveraldifferentresponsibilitiesforBio4Climate,includingoutreach,conferenceplanning,fundraisingandpresentations.Shetablesatevents,andonsocialmediashepublicizesregenerativeworkthatisgoingonallovertheworld.Currentlysheisreadyingaworkshoptohelpparentsandteacherspreparechildrenforclimatechange.

Asaneducatorshefeelsthatclimatechangeisanextremelyimportantissueinchildren'slives.Theworkshopsuggestswaystodosothatarenon-threatening,andhelpsparentsandteachersunderstandhowtheyarefeelingthemselvessothattheycanlistenandrespondwelltochildren.

"Weknowthatkidsarethinkingaboutclimatechange,evenveryyoungones.Therearesomeextremeweathereventshappening,andit’sunavoidableforthemtobeawareofit.Wealsoknowthathoweverhardwe’reworkingtoaddresstheseimpacts,wealsoneedtohelpthemprepare–andtodosoconstructively."

Forest-drivenwaterandenergycyclesarepoorlyintegratedintoregional,national,continentalandglobaldecision-makingonclimatechangeadaptation,mitigation,landuseandwatermanagement.Thisconstrainshumanity’sabilitytoprotectourplanet’sclimateandlife-sustainingfunctions.Thesubstantialbodyofresearchwereviewrevealsthatforest,waterandenergyinteractionsprovidethefoundationsforcarbonstorage,forcoolingterrestrialsurfacesandfordistributingwaterresources.Forestsandtreesmustberecognizedasprimeregulatorswithinthewater,energyandcarboncycles.Ifthesefunctionsareignored,plannerswillbeunabletoassess,adapttoormitigatetheimpactsofchanginglandcoverandclimate.Ourcalltoactiontargetsareversalofparadigms,fromacarbon-centricmodeltoonethattreatsthehydrologicandclimate-coolingeffectsoftreesandforestsasthefirstorderofpriority.Forreasonsofsustainability,carbonstoragemustremainasecondary,thoughvaluable,by-product.Theeffectsoftreecoveronclimateatlocal,regionalandcontinentalscalesofferbenefitsthatdemandwiderrecognition.Theforest-andtree-centeredresearchinsightswereviewandanalyzeprovideaknowledge-baseforimprovingplans,policiesandactions.Ourunderstandingofhowtreesandforestsinfluencewater,energyandcarboncycleshasimportantimplications,bothforthestructureofplanning,managementandgovernanceinstitutions,aswellasforhowtreesandforestsmightbeusedtoimprovesustainability,adaptationandmitigationefforts[Ellison2016:Abstract].
