Recovery from Breast Lift Surgery
A breast lift or mastopexy is a cosmetic surgical procedure in which sagging
breasts raised to a more aesthetically pleasing position. Excess skin beneath
the breast is removed and the remaining skin is pulled taut to provide a more
youthful look. Although this surgical procedure is considered to be a relatively safe,
there is a substantial recovery period involved, which varies among patients. The
normal healing process could take at least 6 weeks. Following the surgeon's
prescribed instructions will help make the process smoother and reduce the risk of
complications.
The Recovery Process
First Two Weeks After Surgery – Mastopexy surgeries are typically done using
general anesthesia. Following the surgery, patients may experience discomfort,
swelling, and bruising, which typically last from two to three weeks. Taking
prescription pain medications makes patients more comfortable during the first week
of breast lift recuperation. Walking soon after the surgery is important as this can
decrease the risk of developing blood clots. For the first few days after the surgery,

patients are required to wear a surgical bra mild compression and support in the
early stages is important.
After the surgical bra is removed, the patient will be required to wear a soft support
bra for several weeks. This ensures a speedy healing process. Antibiotics will also be
given to reduce the risk of post operative infection. The incision area must be kept
dry until the stitches have been removed. Sleeping on the stomach should be
avoided for at least two weeks.
First Several Months – After the removal of bandages, a compression garment is
worn for the next two or three months and the patients should avoid lifting anything
heavy for four to six weeks. The scars will continue to fade over the next several
months, though they will not disappear completely. Normal activities can be resumed
gradually and the time varies among patients. The breast typically resumes its
permanent shape within a period of 6 weeks to 6 months.
The key to a healthy recovery is rest. Overall, initial improvement takes about 3
weeks and full recovery from any side effects of the surgery would take about 6
months.
In a professional plastic surgery practice, the focus would be on patient safety
and natural results. The surgeons as well as staff would help the patient with any
questions or concerns right from the initial consultation through recovery and after.
Properly following the surgeon’s instructions, taking the prescribed medications, and
keeping follow-up appointments will go a long way towards making sure that the
recovery process goes smoothly.
