FORWARD
Evolution of field of Architecture is as old as human civilisation still even
now number of small scale projects are dealt by persons who do not have
technical knowledge in this field especially in towns or villages. Education in
the field of Architecture at diploma level was introduced since 1964. This was
in Women’s’ Polytechnic. Since then it was for female candidates only.
Education related to construction industry for male candidates was limited to
Civil Engineering and after wards Construction Technology and Management.
In field these pass outs were found more suitable for site work and female
candidates for drawing office .Hence there was always requirement of
candidates suitable for both site and office. With the start of this course,
‘Architectural Assistantship’ in co-ed polytechnic number of male candidates
who are interested in this field will be able to take proper education in the field
of Architecture.
The curriculum developed for this programme there is emphasis on practical
work and exposure to field by providing six weeks duration of practical training
and site visits in each subject. There is also emphasis on creating expertise in
architecture related software’s which will serve the purpose of providing
optimal mix of up to date knowledge of requisite skills for the professionals of
today and tomorrow.
The major numbers of candidates opting for diploma education belong to
rural areas or small towns. This education will impart them knowledge and
skills to work in construction industry at their place without running to

metropolitan for getting job. In future it will be possible for them to create new
jobs for the local population also.
Diploma in Architectural Assistantship with 10th as basic qualification is run in
other states like Maharashtra and Gujarat. This course in Madhya Pradesh
has been started to give opportunity to more number of people especially male
candidates.
Detailed curriculum for 1st year course has already been prepared and
executed from academic year 2008-09. For the remaining four semesters
workshop was organised at S.V. Polytechnic College, Bhopal .This will be
implemented from the successive academic sessions.
My sincere thanks to Principal, Faculty and staff of S.V. Polytechnic
College, Bhopal for successfully conducting curriculum development
workshop. Also thanks to experts from higher institute, design and
construction industry for their valuable contribution in developing the
curriculum. Last but to not the least thanks to Dr.Danej and Shri V.K. Jain

in Architectureal Assistantship (III sem to VI sem) was organised in this
institute from 26th May 2009 to 28th May 2009.This is to thank secretary
R.G.P.V.for giving us opportunity to develop curriculum for this new course. I
also thank Prof.Dr. Alka Bharat H.O.D.and Prof. Jagadhish Singh,Department
of Architecture MANIT Bhopal for their valuable contribution in development of

INTRODUCTION
Food, shelter and clothing being basic requirement of human being;
Architecture was important part of man’s life since cave age. The natural
shelter occupied by man decorated with paintings to make it more liable was
the introduction to Architecture. Since then as the civilisation grew Architecture
changed its physical form as per the need of the changing society .To day the
fast changing technology changing living style, land availability and cost
effectiveness; requirement of expertise for construction industry is felt for
metropolitan cities to small settlements.
The council of Architecture till 2007 has 29,085 registered Architects out
of which maximum are working in big cities. In this 46% practicing the
profession as self practice and 49% in private sector .The maximum number of
Architects is in Mumbai also limited to 583.As far as M.P. is concerned the
settlements with more than 100 registered Architects there are only two cities
i.e. –Bhopal 256 and Indore 196.These are all having Bachelor or Master
Degree in Architecture as qualification with most of them working in bigger
cities. Up to 2009 there are about 34,000 total registered Architects .Again for
smaller settlements and villages services of these highly qualified personals is
not available.
In Polytechnic education scheme most of the students are coming from
villages or small settlements. With this point of view Govt. is taking efforts to
open new polytechnic in small towns. Many of these pass outs go back to their
own place and are happy with the life of small settlements. Architectural and
construction work is such settlement is in the hands of non technical persons
generally the local craftsman hence education in Architecture will help the
pass outs of diploma Architectural Assistantship to work for the people in small
town or villages to give better solution for the local needs. He/she is well
acquainted with the local needs and can judiciously use the local material, and
create technically sound and economical buildings. This will also help the
youth to stop running towards main cities and can create job opportunity at
small settlements.

SAILENT FEATURES OF THE NEW COURSE
• Developing in computer skills to fit into present day professional
requirement. The knowledge of various software’s in Architecture with
emphasis on application is achieved through practical’s and drawings in
all subjects are to be produced on computers from middle level to higher
level.
• Exposure to field by
1. Introducing site visits and field visits in almost every subject
2. in final year 6 weeks practical training.
• Emphasis on practical orientation starting from manual work in first year
to application of software’s in subsequent semesters.
• Emphasis on small and medium size Architectural projects which are
common in all level of settlements specially fulfilling the needs of small
settlements in terms of buildings and services.
• Develop written, verbal, visual communication and presentation skills.
• Develop core competencies and soft skills like office and construction
management to become a perfect professional.
• Develop leadership, management and analytical abilities through design
projects.
• Professional activities for professional and self development.
• Emphasis on learning to learn through practical.
• Flexibility in system at higher level in form of electives.
• Project in final year after practical training to develop the student to
handle any construction work from start to finish.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
1. To provide man power as per today’s need of Architectural profession from
metro city to small settlement
2. To provide man power to super wise and manage construction work.
3. To provide man power to work in drawing office with expertise in computer
application. and general office management

to Architectural projects from start to finish.

RATIONALE
The wide range of communicative and functional need of English in the evolving global and technical professional environment has more than ever imposed a demand of acquiring proficiency in communication skills in our technicians and diploma pass outs.
