A member of the USA Gymnastics Hall
of Fame as a coach, Fred Turoff is now en-
joying his 38th season at the helm of the
Owls’ program. Turoff has coached 18
EIGL/ECAC title teams and has a lifetime
coaching record of 432-184 (.701).
A native Philadelphian, Turoff began his
gymnastics career in the Philadelphia junior
high public league and competed with the
Mannettes and Philadelphia Turners. After
his family moved to Connecticut, he became
a two-time state high school all-around
champion for Rippowam High School. As a
member of Temple's gymnastics team from
1966-69, Turoff was the EIGL all-around and
horizontal bar champion in 1968. He earned
the ECAC Scholar-Athlete Award in his senior
season and graduated cum laude with a
physics degree.
In the next two years, he represented
the United States at the 1969 Cup of the
Americas, the 1969 Maccabiah Games, the
1970 World University Games and the 1970
World Championships. Temple's highest ath-
letic honor was presented to Turoff in 1984,
when he was inducted into the Temple Uni-
versity Hall of Fame. Turoff's international
coaching activities began with the 1978
Golden Sands competition in Bulgaria. The
next year, he was assistant coach of the
World Championship team in Fort Worth,
Texas.
In 1991, he was assistant coach for the
U.S. men's team at the World University
Games held in Sheffield, England, and the
Pan American Games in Santiago de Cuba. In
1992, he was an assistant on the U.S.
Olympic team. In November of 1993, Turoff
coached at the Nike International Invita-
tional in Sydney, Australia. He was a mem-
ber of the U.S. coaching staff for the 1994
Team World Championships in Dortmund,
Germany, plus the 1995 American Cup and
Visa Challenge.
He was the coach of the 1996 Pacific Al-
liance Championships team that competed
in Malaysia, and he coached the 1997 Mac-
cabiah team in Israel. Turoff's textbook,
Artistic Gymnastics-A Comprehensive Guide
to Performing and Teaching Skills for Begin-
ners and Advanced Beginners, was released
in April, 1991 by Wm. C. Brown Publishers
and adopted by the U.S. Junior Boys' pro-
gram as its coaching manual.
In previous writing endeavors, Turoff
co-authored a rules supplement governing
boys' gymnastics for 1977-80 and edited the
1981-84 rules. The current AACCA Cheer-
leading Safety Manual also contains a sec-
tion he authored. He received the U.S.
Gymnastics Federation's Frank Cumiskey
Award in 1980 for contributions to the boys'
Junior Olympic Program. He also received
the Robert Stout Service Award in 1984 for
his work in the Region Seven boys' program.
The National Association of Collegiate
Gymnastics Coaches honored Turoff with its
Special Service Award after he served for
two terms each as the association's presi-
dent and secretary-treasurer. He previously
served six years on the NCAA Men's Gym-
nastics Committee 1987-93, the last two as
chair, and currently serves again. Turoff was
voted NCAA Eastern Region Coach of the
Year in 1981, 1985, 1986, 1991, 1998, 2000,
2007, 2012 and 2013. In 2003, the College
Gymnastics Association presented Turoff
with the Honor Coach Award, the highest
honor given by the Association, which is
composed of present and former collegiate
gymnastics coaches.
He has served on the USAG Hall of Fame
Selection Committee for 27 years and is its
current chair. He is a past president of the
United States Elite Coaches Association for
Men's Gymnastics. Turoff is a nationally and
internationally certified judge. He served as
delegation leader and judge for the USA-
Italy men's competition in Italy in 1982; he
was delegation leader for the USA-Canada
meet in May, 1990; he judged at the 1990
USA-DDR-Switzerland meet and the 1991
Pan American Games. In 1987-88, and again
in 1991 he served on a committee to re-eval-
uate the international ratings of pommel
horse skills and compose a new compulsory
routine.
Turoff also contributed to the 1989 and
1993 international Code of Points. In both
2009 and 2010, he was a member of the
committee to pick US gymnasts to compete
in the World Championships. An avid scuba
diver, Turoff also enjoys underwater pho-
tography. He has an instructor's license and
has instructed SCUBA classes at Temple.
Some of his photos can be seen in materials
published by the National Association of Un-
derwater Instructors.
The Owls' mentor completed his Mas-
ter of Education in biomechanics in August,
1991, and is married to Diane Eigner, better
known as "the Cat Doctor". The couple has
one child, Evan, who is a sophomore on the
Owls' squad this season.

52014 Temple Men’s Gymnastics Media Guide
Former Temple gymnast and NCAA All-American, Patrick McLaughlin enters his third season as the assistant men’s gymnastics coach at
his alma mater. In just two seasons as Fred Turoff’s assistant, McLaughlin has aided the Owls to back-to-back Eastern Collegiate Athletic Con-
ference championships and a pair of NCAA Championship appearances, helping himself earn ECAC and NCAA East Region Assistant Coach of
the Year both seasons. McLaughlin, who is currently pursuing his Master’s degree in Sport and Recreation Management, was a gymnast at
Temple for four seasons (2008-2011), while earning his undergraduate degree in Kinesiology.
As a gymnast at Temple, McLaughlin was the first Owl since 2005 to reach the individual event finals of the 2011 NCAA Championships,
where he placed seventh on parallel bars and was named an All-America honoree, the first for Temple since 2004. In that same year, he was
named the ECAC's Senior Gymnast of the Year, Temple's Male Student-Athlete of the Year and NovaCare's Comeback Student-Athlete of the
Year.
During his career at Temple, he was a member of two ECAC Championship teams and tied for first on Floor exercise in 2008, in addition
to earning a variety of ECAC medals. While leading the conference as an all-arounder in 2010, he suffered a severe ankle injury that cut short
that season but the NCAA hardship rule allowed him another season. He was elected co-captain twice and earned All-America Scholar-Ath-
lete status four years. In addition to his recognitions, McLaughlin was named ECAC Gymnast of the Week, NCAA Gymnast of the Week and
Philadelphia Inquirer 2009-10 Academic All-Area At-Large Performer of the Year.

Neil D. Theobald is Temple’s 10th president.
He began his tenure at Temple on January 1, 2013.
In naming Theobald to this role, Temple
Board of Trustees Chairman Patrick J. O’Connor
cited his extensive record of accomplishment as a
university administrator and faculty member: "Dr.
Theobald is a gifted teacher and dedicated re-
searcher. In addition, he has a deep and practical
understanding of the changing dynamics of higher
education. He wants to ensure that students have
access to an education that is first-class and af-
fordable. I can't think of a better set of values to
bring to the Temple presidency."
Theobald was named Indiana University’s
senior vice president in 2007. Previously, he had
served as the senior vice provost at the University’s
flagship campus in Bloomington and as special as-
sistant to IU’s president. Major accomplishments
during more than a decade as a senior administra-
tor at Indiana University include increasing the
mean SAT score of the incoming class at IU Bloom-
ington from 1096 to 1203, directing a $1.1 billion
capital campaign, and boosting IU’s credit ranking
to Moody’s highest level (Aaa).
In addition to his administrative responsibili-
ties, Theobald holds a professorship in education
finance. His research interests in the appropriate
role of decentralization in educational financing
and in modeling educational labor markets are re-
flected in more than $1.5 million in funded re-
search, numerous books and book chapters,
dozens of articles published in professional jour-
nals, and nearly 50 policy reports for state govern-
ments across the United States.
At Indiana University, Dr. Theobald directed
a research center that assisted state governments
in Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, and Washington
in devising education funding processes that equi-
tably facilitated academic excellence. In addition,
Theobald was a three-time winner of IU's Teach-
ing Excellence Recognition Award.
Theobald is a past-president of the American
Education Finance Association, winning the asso-
ciation's Jean Flanigan Award for the outstanding
dissertation in the study of educational finance in
1990. In 1995, the University Council for Educa-
tional Administration presented Theobald with the
Jack A. Culbertson Award as the professor who, in
the first seven years of his or her career, made the
most outstanding contribution to the profession.
In 2003, Theobald was presented the Distinguished
Graduate Award by the College of Education at the
University of Washington.
A native of Peoria, Ill., Theobald had planned
to enter an electrician’s apprenticeship after high
school. However, donors to Trinity College in Con-
necticut made it possible for him to attend college
and Theobald earned a bachelor’s degree in 1978.
After a short stint in the corporate world, Theobald
began his education career as a secondary school
mathematics teacher in the State of Washington,
where he also coached baseball. He subsequently

The Liacouras CenterThe Liacouras Center is a four-building
complex that includes a Convocation Center,
the Independence Blue Cross Student Recre-
ation Center, 1700 North Broad Street and the
Entertainment Community Center with retail
shops, a 1,200-car parking garage, and a live-
music restaurant. The Center has been designed
as a venue for culture, sports, entertainment,
commerce and education.
The Convocation Center seats 11,000 for
convocations, commencements and concerts;
10,206 for basketball games; and up to 3,500 for
theater and dance. The theater configuration is
named for benefactress Esther Boyer Griswold.
Rededicated on February 13, 2000, and
named in honor of former Temple President
Peter J. Liacouras, The Liacouras Center, the
home of Temple basketball, is one of the pre-
mier on-campus arenas in the country.
Already the site of some exciting events in
its history, the Temple venue has hosted such
sold-out concerts as Bob Dylan, along with the
NBA Players Party prior to the 2002 NBA All-Star
game and the 2002 Atlantic 10 Women's Bas-
ketball Championship. The Liacouras Center was
also the site of the 2003 NCAA Men's Gymnas-
tics Championships, the 2004 NCAA Women's
Basketball First and Second Rounds, and the
2006 and 2011 NCAA Women's Basketball Re-
gionals.
In an historic partnership, the Pennsylva-
nia state legislature provided capital funds -
$31.8 million - to build a new multi-use com-
plex, provided the University could raise $28.7
million from private sources. The total cost of
the multi-building complex would be $107 mil-
lion - an investment in Temple's future.
Originally christened The Forum at The
Apollo of Temple, the Board of Trustees voted in
2000 to change the building name to The Lia-
couras Center in honor of President Liacouras'
retirement after 18 years as Temple's chief ex-
ecutive.
Lincoln Financial FieldOn August 13, 2003, the Philadelphia Ea-
gles and Temple University announced a 15-
year pact for the Owls to play their home
football games at Lincoln Financial Field. An av-
erage of 24,137 fans per game witnessed the
Cherry & White in its inaugural season at the
venue, a 21 percent increase from the prior
year's average.
Lincoln Financial Field, familiarly known as
The Linc, is the home stadium of the National
Football League's Philadelphia Eagles. It has a
seating capacity of 68,532 (69,032 with Stand-
ing Room Only tickets). The stadium was named
in June 2002 when the Lincoln Financial Group
paid $139.6 million for naming rights over the
next 21 years. It is located in South Philadelphia
on Pattison Avenue between 11th and 10th
Streets, closer to the area's stretch of Interstate
95 than to Pattison.
In 2011, the stadium became powered
with a combination of onsite wind, solar, and
dual-fuel generated electricity, making it the
world’s first major sports stadium to convert to
self-generated renewable energy. Approxi-
mately $25 million was invested to build the sys-
tem, saving the Eagles an estimated $60 million
in energy costs.
Edberg-Olson HallEdberg-Olson Hall is the home of the Tem-
ple University football program. Officially dedi-
cated on December 9, 2000, the facility was
designed by AP3C Architects of Philadelphia.
The building was engineered to not only support
the football team's functional requirements, but
to enhance the experience through innovative
design concepts.
During the season, approximately 250 peo-
ple will pass through its doors on a daily basis.
In 2012, Edberg-Olson Hall underwent a $10
