It
is
hard
for
us
to
believe
that the
first
quarter
of 1985 is
now
history. These f i

We
ill
have
to back
up
to
December of last year in
order to bring you up to the present.
Christmas 1984)was pent
n
Samban.
We
f inished
the Primer workshop at Ukarumpa
and ust
barely
had enough
time
to getdown
to
Madang,buy
a ew
groceries,
and
make t
out
to
Samban
on
he
24th.
In
nticipation
of
our return, not
a
whole
ot of Christmas ele
bration
planning had been done. So we ot
together with some folks and planned
a
sports' day,
plus some extra worship times.
We had
opened
our
presents
earlier
in
Madang.
The
oys
did
not
seem
to
mind
this
at
all.
We ctually spent
ust
about twoand
a
alf
weeks before
we went
back into
Madang
or
our
Annual Meeting. If
i t
hadn't
been
for
Christmas, we
would
have probably just
stayed
in
Madang
or
that time, but our
folks
out here were r e a l l y wanting
us
to
spend
Christmas
ith
them.
The
week ollowing

we

We got back to

spent a lot of time talking about
some
concepts that were new to
them,
specially
in
regard
to
expressingthem

Botin. While this
was going on, we
began s i l k

a rather slow process, but very
e f f e c t i v e .
This was also new to our fellows,
but
we
managed to
get
about thirty booklets
printed
and stapled together.
Also
in
February,we egan anew
ethod of
presenting our memory verses ~ via pocket
charts. These
charts are
made to enable
teachers to display whole sentences
or
parts
depending
on
the task at
hand. I t has
been
good
for
the
i l l i t e r a t e folk who
have
begun
getting
basic concepts of reading
from
e f t
to
r i g h t , as well as learning a ew sight words.
Using this method, we have
seen
improvement
n people, lready i t e r a t e in the
trade language, who beforehand
had been
more r

their efforts
to read the
vernacular. Also, with this method, we
have
been
more or
less assured th at by he
time
we

that
just
about
everybody
attending

March proved to be a
really
busy month.
The
i

test class of
the Transition Primer. We ad elected about
10 people
who
we thought would give
us
a cross-section of trade language literacy

they
were able to help

that would really make a
difference in the

Also during the irst week fMarch, e ere

our
Easter story text
with the
big

the area.
We

We ere really encouraged by their interest.

We
were

by

the

would

on

which

she

was here,
we

five working
days. We ere
certainly impressed
by the
whole
procedure.
We are hoping to
have the

by
the end of April. If possible, we
hope
to
have
a fly-in to celebrate our irst

the
people
have
been putting some of the

will provide them with an

spiritual growth. This
will be
an

in order to
train
our

During

ur aim

to
further
refine
our language

along
with
developing

techniques
of

our

during

school programs
for
Jesse and Joshua,
getting
the

vacancy, nd
getting everything a l l
packed
up,adds up o a
busy time.
At
hesame ime,we ill endeavor to spend
some
uality
time with the folk
here.
Our olk
are not very eager
for us
to leave, yet they
recognize
our desire
to
see our
families
again.
We
re
praying that
what
wehave een able to
accomplish this
term
will aid them in
their
s p i r i t u a l growth during th e next
year, s
well
as
to stimulate
their interest in vernacular
literacy.
Aswe
ook

re
excited with the prospects of
seeing
