PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Dwayne Hopwood Principal
It was wonderful to see so many Year 7 parents come to our Teams night yesterday. The relationships that are formed between the boys, the Team teachers and parents support the success of the boys for their entire time at high school. It is always a nice way to start Year 7 with the evening and dinner afterwards. So many parents commented on the lovely community atmosphere of the evening. Our annual Open Night is on next Monday 27th February. It would be great if you could encourage any friends, family or neighbours to come along and see what the school has to offer their sons. As with previous years many of the boys will be asked to come along and lead activities on the evening. This is a great leadership opportunity for all those involved that they really enjoy. If your son is going to be asked to attend a permission note will come home next week. Safe Drop off at School We encourage parents who drive their sons to school to make sure that they are dropped of safely. The front courtyard on Liverpool Road is reserved for boys with disability permits. The best place to drop your son off is at a short distance from school in one of the back streets.

YEAR 7 EVENING
2017 is going to be an exciting year for Music at ABHS.
We will have four ensembles running this year: Stage Band, Concert Band, The Drumming Ensemble and a Training Band. The Stage Band is for experienced players and is conducted by one of Sydney's finest jazz musicians, guitarist Carl Morgan. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays from 3.10 to 4.10. The Concert Band and Training Band will be conducted this year by myself, Ian Pieterse. I have been a professional musician in Sydney for over 20 years and a newly appointed Music staff member at ABHS. Rehearsals for Concert Band are on Thursday from 2.30 to 4.00p.m. Training Band rehearsals will be on Tuesday mornings from 8. 00a.m to 8.45.am.
We have a new drum tutor this year, Ben Kidson, one of Sydney's finest professional drummers.
He will be tutoring on drum kit and percussion, and conducting The Drumming Ensemble. Ben
has conducted drumming ensembles across Australia and has an amazing knowledge
of rhythms from across the globe. The drumming ensemble will be held on Tuesday afternoon
3.10 -4.10. These ensembles are open to all students and you do not need any experience to be
involved. If your child is interested in any of the ensembles or would like to be tutored in brass,
woodwind, percussion or guitar, please ask him to see Mr Pieterse in the CAPA staffroom to get
a note. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Ian Pieterse on extension

$$$$ EARNING MONEY $$$$ To begin the Year 9 Mathematics topic of Earning Money, students first worked in groups to brainstorm the concepts involved in earning money. Students then placed their collective results in a mindmap on the board. After further discussion and terms explained, students completed a cut and paste activity of definitions and terminology. Year 7 start the Visual Arts course learning all the basic skills required to become budding young artists. This week, students learned about the colour wheel and how to mix and match colours in an effective manner. This will lay a strong foundation for all future art making and design practice. “Today we learned how to mix primary colours into secondary colours. We understood complementary, cool and warm colours. We had a lot of fun and this will help us with all painting in the future.” Dylan Mazzucco and Oliver Harding (Year 7)

A week ago our athletics superstar Nicholas Beekwilder competed at NSW Junior and Youth Athletics Championship. The competition was held at Olympic Park and Nicholas finished 2nd in javelin with a solid throw of 45.51m. This championship preceded the Little Athletics Regional Athletics Competition which was held at Sylvania Waters, where Nicholas captured the second place with a brilliant throw of 51.50m. Nicholas is now aiming to go a step further at Australian Junior Athletics Championship later next month. The perfect javelin throw requires the athlete to release the javelin with maximum speed at ideal flying angle. "My training goal over the next couple of weeks is to incorporate resistance - band explosive movement exercises into my training routine, simulating the real javelin throw"- reflected Nicholas on his short term training plan.
