Early Release/Apr 15
February 2016
We are now heading into the second half
of our school year. Students will be re-
ceiving their Term One Report Cards on
Friday February 5th, 2015 and many
have identified some personal goals in
mind to focus their learning.
Parents are always welcome and encour-
aged to contact the school if they have
concerns or need more information about
their child‘s academic or social progress.
Teachers will be continuing to work on
adapting their instructional practices to
meet the individual needs of their students
and our foci remain literacy and numera-
cy.
Thank you very much to those who took
the time to contribute to the DSBN‘s stra-
tegic planning process by following the

formation will be sent via email!

There may be times during
the school year where in-
clement weather or other
situations could cause trans-

school closures.
At times when student trans-

and schools remain open, the
decision of whether or not to
have children in school on
that day rests with the par-
ent or guardian.
Should you decide not to
send your child to school in

ensure that you call your
child’s school to inform
them of your child’s ab-

Good Character at Prince Philip
In January, Prince Philip staff were on the lookout for students who consistently
demonstrated PERSEVERANCE. The students listed below did just that demon-
strated that hard work and dedication can be seen in many form and differ-
ent areas. Staff noted that the attitudes these students displayed ranged from
not getting discouraged and giving up when not being chosen for a team, to
continuing to work with a positive attitude after receiving feedback, to logging
many Dreambox hours even when the lessons were very challenging. They
were honoured at an assembly at the end of January and they will have their
pictures placed on Prince Philip‘s Tableau d’honneur/Wall of Fame. In Febru-
ary, we will be looking for students who consistently demonstrate COOPERA-
TION.
Congratulations, Pumas!

One of our own is highlighted in Discover Girls
Sarah A is a Grade 6
student at Prince Philip
and she is highlighted in
this month‘s Discover Girls
magazine. In the segment
she mentions school-
related experiences with
being bullied and with
anxiety.
Sarah‘s experience with
Discovery Girls has been
going on for a while! She
was 1 of 30 children chosen
out of 8000 applicants to
be highlighted in this mag-
azine. In the summer of
2014, she went to Califor-
nia for a photo shoot. In
addition, Sarah has written
an article about "My Worst
Day...and How I Survived
It" that is coming up and
being published in the April
2016 issue of Discovery
Girls.
We are very proud of Sa-
rah and her accomplish-
ment....she has demonstrat-
ed to be an advocate for
mental health and perse-
verance!.
Check it out!

School Store, Milk Program, and Pizza
Our school store is open daily and features milk, popcorn, and cheese. Students can
also purchase milk cards which will eliminate the need to bring cash to school but
will allow students to have fresh, cold milk daily. Milk cards are $20 and the best
way to purchase them is through School Cash Online—though cash and cheques are
accepted. Pizza will be available again in March. Remember, the class with the
highest enrollment in School Cash Online will win pizza for March (see detail on
Page 1 of this newsletter).

Mr. Mus has begun this year's version of the Prince Philip Yearbook. Anyone who wishes to submit an ad, is most

Student Medical Concerns/Anaphylaxis
We would like to re-
mind students and par-
ents/guardians that we
have students who have
life-threatening aller-
gies to peanuts/nuts. It
is our request that you
avoid sending peanut
or almond based food
as snacks with your child
to school. Trace amounts,
or even the smell of these
products, can cause ana-
phylactic shock and pos-
sibly death. As the holi-
day season approaches
and opportunities to send
treats and snacks to
school arise, please re-
member to ensure that all
treats (and ingredients)
are nut free. We thank
you very much for your
continued support!
Court Orders
When couples separate
or divorce, parents gen-
erally share custody of
the children. Sometimes,
however, other arrange-
ments are made and set
out in a court order. The
school cannot enforce
these alternate arrange-
ments unless we have a
copy of the court order
on file in your child‘s
confidential Ontario
School Record. Should
you have such a court
order that we should be
aware of, please speak
to the principal and share
the most current copy
with the school office.
Head Lice
Parents are an important
part of controlling head
lice. Children are espe-
cially prone to these pests
as they often play close
together where heads
may come in close contact.
Remind your children
to put their tuques and
other headgear in
their lockers.
Long hair should be
braided or pinned
close to the head.
Hats, combs, brushes
should not be lent or
borrowed, and should
be washed regularly.
Check your school age
children once weekly
for head lice.
Please notify the
school immediately if
head lice or nits are
found.
When students are found
to have lice or nits par-
ents will be contacted
and students will be sent
home, as our goal is to
keep the school lice free.
The school sends infor-
mation home with all stu-
dents in a class where
head lice has been
found. This is also availa-
ble for parents to assist
in the treatment of head
lice.

Math Minute(s)
At Prince Philip we continue to
encourage all students in Grades
4 through 8 to spend at least 1
hour per week on DreamBox
Learning®'s Math Program
(sessions should be at least 20
minutes in length). This program
supports students in developing
various models for thinking and
reinforces important mathematical
concepts.
In order to promote this very val-
uable program, we are continuing
our DreamBox Challenge at Prince
Philip. For this challenge, we cal-
culate average (mean) lessons
completed during each month for
each class. The class with the
highest average for each month
will earn a prize. January‘s win-
ning class was, once again, Mme
Latondress‘ Grade 4 class and
they will have special treat for
their hard work. The mean com-
pleted lessons among the students
in 4L for the month of January
was 26!
We also honour the students who
complete the most lessons. For
January, we recognize all stu-
dents who completed 28 lessons
or more. Each of these students
completed (on average) more
than the recommended 5 to 7 les-
sons per week. These students have
their names posted in the front hall
and their names will be entered
into a draw to take place later this
month. Their names will be entered
once for every 7 lessons they com-
pleted. In January, we had 75 dif-
ferent students to enter in the
draw! Ainsley B (5We) was, once
again, at the top of that list! She
completed an incredible 200 les-
sons in January! In second place,
and tops among all Intermediate
student was Curtis R (8D) with an
outstanding 103 lessons completed!
We have included our ―Top 25‖
here. Way to go, Pumas!
Although the students we honour
here, in assemblies, and in our front
hall should be commended for their
incredible work, so should the stu-
dents who complete between 20
and 28 lessons (or 4 hours) in a
month because that means they
completed 5 to 7 lessons (or 1
hour) per week. That is a total wor-
thy of congratulations! Big congrat-
ulations to all those Pumas who met
that target!
