ARAMIS 2+ exoskeleton for upper limb rehabilitation
• The FEX robot is an exoskeleton glove developed and patented by TelerobotLABS (GE2014A000120).
• The FEX robot aims to develop an innovative hand robotic exoskeleton for the functional recovery of hand movements and for the assistance in ADLs (activities of daily living) in neurological and orthopaedic patients.
FEX - Fingers Extending eXoskeleton
FEX - IDEA
The best solution for rehabilitation/assistance to hand functional losses would be a:
Wearable,
4-fingers actuated,
Exoskeleton Glove
Which should provide:
Assistance for ADL tasks
Active Motion: Assistive/resistive forces
Passive Motion
Specific design for managing spasticity
Hand rehabilitation for in/out-patients (tele-rehabilitation)
Requirements
It should not interfere with or restrict the natural range of movement of joints
Should be unobtrusive at the palm so to allow naturalinteraction with objects (ADL tasks)
It should exert forces to support bidirectionalmovement
Safe (back-drivable), compliant and lightweight Integration of sensors for diagnostics Easy to don/doff Modular/scalable Low cost
The the heart of Fex is its innovative multi link under actuated vertebra like exoskeletal structure The fex spine like “finger” can adapt to any different finger configuration loading in a progressive and controlled way the finger. The low section and clean profile of Fex fits on the hand with little impact
Ongoing activities- motion analysis
The analysis of (ROM) between normal and pathological subject while wearing the FEX showed that the pathological subjects while using the FEX during the ADL compared with the normal subject in the same condition showed no statistical differences. These results demonstrate that the FEX is kinematically transparent to the any user. Moreover, in healthy subject, can be appreciated that the kinematic and rom analysis with and without wearing the FEX during ADLs activities shows that no relevant and statistical differences were found.
Ongoing activities- pre-clinical studiesSpecial attention given to the comfort of wearingwhile the fingers were forced to open with good acceptability assessed by a specific generic unidimensional questionnaires suitable for evaluating the acceptability. The mean of results of acceptability were 8±2 (were 0 is minimum and 10 the maximum values). The mean of results of pain intensity were 3±1 (were 0 is minimum and 10 the maximum values). All subjects showed excellent compliance and remarkable satisfaction, highlighted by the results of the NRS rating 7±3 Absence of dropouts associated to intolerance to treatment.
FEX will be developed along two different directions:
FEX as a rehabilitation device which would be used as a rehabilitation-only device used under supervision of trained staff of hospital or rehabilitation center.
FEX4ALL as a portable, lightweight system to support grasping movements of human fingers and execute low-intensive rehabilitation used in-home and without supervision of trained personnel.
