Certified to prepare for the NCLEX through NC Boards of Nursing.

Mitchell-Botts, Heather (Raleigh)
I've been confused about what this was supposed to mean. I've adjusted it to basically say that ECPI is certified by the NC Board of Nursing to prepare students for the NCLEX exam. If that is not what this was supposed to say, please make sure you adjust it.

Biography for Michael Taylor

I grew up in Kinston, NC and began learning in earnest when I was a paper carrier for the local newspaper. While folding newspapers to prepare them for being tossed from my super-fast 10 speed bicycle I would read the daily news, cover to cover…multitasking in the 60s. After High School I wanted to go where the sky is always blue and begged my way into the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Majoring in Business Administration, (because I disliked computers), I migrated from Accounting to Finance to Personnel looking for the right mix to make my life count for something. I did not figure it out for a while and wandered from sales job to sales job because that is what Business graduates do. I spent 15 years in healthcare sales and 5 years as a business owner and independent manufacturer’s representative. Though lucrative, sales did not satisfy my need for feeling fabulous about my career life.

A merger of two important factors led me to ECPI. I had been selling a medical software product that did not work and my boss fired me for undiplomatically suggesting we fix it. It was timely. I had already asked myself if my life would only be judged by having sold medical supplies and decided I had had enough of life on the road. My previous dislike of computers had been replaced by a slow necessary adoption of the aggravating gizmos. Encouraged by my frugal nature, I found that I could, with some effort, build and repair my own computer. That led me to study for and obtain an A+ certification. I worked for free to gain experience. Subsequently, I took a contract job at half my former pay to work full time. Though I was now poor with children in college, it was fun helping people with computer problems and even more fun teaching them how to use them. Teaching…hmm, now there is something that I could be happy doing.

While serving as a Lab Supervisor for a global computer training company, an advertisement for an instructor at ECPI to teach A+ certification grabbed my attention. A few terms of teaching certification classes got me hooked. I was offered the chance to teach full time and subsequently completed my Master’s degree from East Carolina University, concentrating on Network Administration/Security. Since that time, I have focused on Networking and the related Routing and Switching classes. Additionally, I have been a technical reviewer for the highly popular Cisco Networking Academy book series that has sold over a half million copies. I published articles on networking topics in online magazines. I have written several instructor guides, slide presentations, and question banks for Pearson Publishing for their A+, Network+, and Cisco products. My last authored work was a complete Network+ Simulator, which is offered at all major book outlets.

In addition to ‘instructor’ (my favorite role), I have been school class scheduling manager, department head for CIS(6 yrs.), and most recently Network Security Curriculum Chair/Associate Dean for all campuses. I am passionate about the curriculum role and am always driving the process to improve what we offer to our students to prepare them.

Other important interests include my wife, 3 fabulous children, 5 amazing grandchildren, Boy Scout Committee Chairman and Sunday School teacher for 12 -14 year olds. BTW: One of my children is a graduate of ECPI, currently working at Tekelec.

Success StoriesNetwork Security

Jose M. – AS Network Security – 6/2012

Jose is a veteran of the USMC. While in the Marine Corp he served in a technical capacity, so we can thank our military for assisting him in his technical career along with instilling discipline and dedication.

Jose completed an internship with a national staffing company whose HQ is in Raleigh. He was on the IT staff, and as he was nearing graduation, he got deployed in 2010.

Nearly 2 years after his internship, Jose returned and completed his AS Degree. He was pursuing a 2nd internship just for the experience and was hired from that as a Technical Support Engineer with a local computer services company.

Darrell G. – BS Network Security – 6/ 2012

Darrel served in the US Navy for more than 10 years and demonstrated leadership and management skills throughout his service. Following his military career, he worked in a couple customer service and technical support positions which drove his interest in coming to ECPI.

Darrell was eager to put his education to work, and spent time with the CS team building his résumé and checking on available and appropriate positions. After many applications, and interviews, without landing a position, it would have been easy for Darrell to give up. Finally a great opportunity as a Help Desk Technician presented itself, and he is on track. Not without challenges in scheduling and learning the new technology, but he is demonstrating persistence and laying the ground work for his new career.

Success Stories

Electronic Engineering Technology

Barry J – BS EET – May 2011Barry had Service Management experience prior to ECPI and worked as a machine operator and manufacturing technician while in school. He was promised promotions by his employer with his BS Degree from ECPI, although over time that did not materialize. He did not engage with CS team much while in school and immediately following graduation. It was almost a year after graduation when his promotion was clearly not being offered that he finally contacted us. THEN we had résumé, interview, and salary negotiation conversations to assist with his job hunt. He found 2 exciting opportunities and Barry was flown to NY (near where family lived) and actually interviewed and was offered both positions. We discussed the pros/cons of the positions and he accepted one. Friday we received the following EM: Hi Alan!I just wanted to take a minute and fill you in on how my new job is going in New York. After just a few short months of on the job training, ASML sent me to Taiwan for a week to train and have now asked me to be one of two project leads for our new EUV machine. The company is flying me and my family to Veldhoven, The Netherlands for 7 months to train for my new title as "Machine Father". I just wanted to thank you for investing your time with me in helping me get prepared for my interviews. My life is completely different today than it was 1 year ago, and I couldn't be happier! My flight leaves for Europe tomorrow, so I need to go pack. I just wanted to take a quick moment out of my busy schedule to say "Thank you!" Sincerely, Barry J.

Brandon H. – AS / BS EET – 5/2012Brandon had very little work experience prior to ECPI. He was not a top student, completing his program with a low B average. In addition to the electronics education, he worked on his interpersonal communication skills.Brandon also spent extra time in the classroom when having trouble understanding concepts. He made himself well known to the CS team, due to his strong desire to land a curriculum related position.Midway through his AS Degree, an entry level opportunity came up with a major technology company. It was 3rd shift, and fairly routine work, but it represented a foot in the door. Upon graduation from his BS degree, Brandon transitions to a FT Electronics Technician.

Success Stories

Criminal Justice

Lori H. – BS CJ – 9/2012

Lori graduated from our Criminal Justice program and nearly stepped into her County Security position right away. Like many ECPI students, Lori met her employer at an event on campus, either a Career Fair or in her case a guest speaker who attended one of her classes.

After the presentation, we arranged for her to speak with the guest for advice and guidance in applying for positions with his organization.

One thing led to another, and after a formal application, interview and background check, Lori started her Criminal Justice career. This is not her dream position, but she sees how her first step in the door leads to new opportunities that will open for her down the road.

 Roberto C. – BS CJ – 6/2012

Roberto landed a position with a local security company while still enrolled at ECPI. Again, as a result of a career fair introduction, the opportunity seemed perfect. Hours were flexible around school, and upon graduation he received full time hours, a raise. Roberto is poised for additional responsibilities and has been with his company for more than a year.

Practical NursingSuccess Stories

JW – 8/2012JW had 2 years of billing and coding experience AND 4 years of CNA experience when she enrolled at ECPI for our PN program.

Like all ECPI students she progressed through a rigorous practical nursing experience and in her case, her on-site education included working in the following environments: Mental Health, Skilled Nursing, and Rehab. While her grades were not top of the class, she applied her education in a practical setting and utilized her hands on knowledge and interpersonal skills to her advantage.

She applied to some of her practical sites and too many other facilities as well. She worked closely with CS team and was responsive to leads provided and communicated regularly about her search progress.

She landed a great PN position within 60 days of graduation, which is fantastic considering the process included taking and passing the national exam and receiving licensure from the state of NC.

TU – 5/2012TU came to ECPI with a variety of experiences, including managing a transportation company and med tech/ CNA for a little over 3 years. Her clinical rotation was the same as JW above, except it included a rotation working with patients with developmental disabilities.

Through many résumé and application submittals, TU landed a great job at a Rehab facility.

Bio for MR. TRAVIS BUTLER

I was born and raised in Greenwood, South Carolina with a very close family. During high school my

brother and I race dirt track stock cars on the week end and thus started my love for racing. My family

and I have attended numerous races and I have had the opportunity to meet several NASCAR drivers.

After graduation I entered the military in 1992. While on active duty I was a medic in the 1st Battalion

21st Infantry Regiment (Gimlets), as a part of the 25th Infantry Division. During my time in the military

I was able to travel to South Korea, Washington state and Fort Polk Louisiana. In 1994 I was deployed to

Haiti as a part of Operation Uphold Democracy. During my time in Haiti I was a member of the United

Nations while supporting the mission in Haiti. During this time I was able to earn the Expert Field

Medical Badge, it is the highest honor for any medic to receive.

After my time on active duty I spent 5 years in the reserves at Fort Gordon, Georgia. I was able to gain

experience working on the general surgical ward, in the emergency room and at a troop medical clinic.

During my time in the reserves I enrolled at Lander University in Greenwood South Carolina. In 2002 I

graduated from Lander with a Bachelors degree in Healthcare Administration.

Before coming to ECPI I spent time as a counselor at an outdoor treatment facility for troubled teens in

Pittsboro NC. On the weekends I enjoy working around the house and playing golf.

Department Head

Biography for Jennifer K. Thomason, MSN, RN I was born in Los Angeles, California, and spent my elementary school years there. By junior high, my parents

moved to Nashville, Tennessee. I was fortunate enough to be accepted into the BSN program at Western Kentucky

University, and begin my training right out of high school. The summer before my last year, I married my college

sweetheart. By my first wedding anniversary I was pregnant with my first son, and I had just graduated from the

BSN program at WKU.

I passed my NCLEX-RN in Tennessee, but soon moved to Charlotte, North Carolina. I stayed home with my son for

9 months before returning to work. I was with the county health department, working in the community OB/GYN

and pediatric clinics. I moved into a position as the Patient Educator for Carolinas Healthcare System / Ambulatory

Services. My position was funded through a High-risk OB grant, so I was based in the main clinic. During that time,

I was part of a process improvement committee that was in progress. As a result, I was one of the 4 selected to

present our work to the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations when they visited.

I left that organization when we moved to Raleigh, North Carolina. I worked for a surgeon in her office, and

enjoyed assisting her in the operating room as well. When her partner retired, I left for a position as a Nurse Case

Manager at IBM. I enjoyed being there for a couple of years, but left to have my second son.

A couple of years later I started working at Duke Children’s Consultative Services, and began graduate school

through the University of Phoenix Online. I realized that the nursing shortage is partially due to a shortage of

instructors. Teaching had always been my favorite part of the job, so I decided to pursue a teaching position at the

university level following graduation. My nurse manager at Duke advised me to check out ECPI. My telephone call

with the DON went well, and I came in for an interview. I enjoyed working in the Practical Nursing Diploma

program for a couple of years, but found the schedule incompatible with motherhood. I was blessed to take a

position in the Medical Program. I have been working in that department for 4 years.

I have also been accompanying our High School Presenter to the local high schools and performing demonstrations.

The students love to watch me draw fake blood for the artificial arm, and jump at the chance to try under my direct

supervision. When the Medical Club needed a faculty sponsor, I volunteered. We have helped wrap gifts with the

marines for Toys for Tots, and raised money for cancer research. I love my career!

by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists and spent an additional four years in the Army

working in hospital laboratories. Upon an honorable separation I went to Texas Christian

University to get my Masters in Medical Technology, Laboratory Education Option and managed

the Hematology Department at the Tarrant County Hospital District in Fort Worth, Texas, where

I was involved in teaching new medical technologists along with my regular supervisory

responsibilities. I then entered a career in industry in sales and technical support with Organon

Teknika Corporation, where I travelled all over the country and abroad demonstrating, training,

performing general maintenance and quality control for our line of HIV diagnostic products. I

Success StoriesMedical Assisting

Amie is a 2012 Medical Assisting graduate who has 2 teenage boys at home.  Being an ECPI

student during the day gave her the flexibility she needed to home school her sons while furthering her

own education.  She was concerned that upon graduation, she would not be able to find a job that

allowed her the same flexibility for her family obligations.  Just as she was about to give up on her

search for the perfect part-time job, the ideal opportunity presented itself.  Career Services hosted an

employer on campus to conduct interviews and Amie was nervous, but did great!  She was chosen to

have a second “working interview” in the physician’s office and after making a great impression with

her clinical skills and understanding, she was offered the position!  She started 2 weeks before

Christmas and feels she is truly in the perfect place for her!

Laura was a Medical Assisting graduate who was driven to succeed from the time she began

school at ECPI.  She was working hard at school while working a full time retail job in addition to

having a family.  Laura had an excellent work ethic that made a great impression on everyone –

including the urgent care office where she did her internship.  She did such a great job that they offered

her a position as she about to complete her training hours, but there was only one problem – the pay

was NOT GOOD.  Laura accepted the position anyway since she really felt like she needed a job. It

was also a 5 minute walk from her home and across the road from her second job.  A few months

passed, but we knew Laura was not happy in her new position.  While we truly believe every graduate

should keep their 1st job for a minimum of 1 year after graduation – this was a special case.  After a few

conversations, we came up with a plan to get Laura a new job with MUCH better pay.  Career Services

introduced Laura to different Urgent care that loved her and offered her a job right away – and the pay

was $4.00 more an hour – she was able to quit her second job, have more time with her family and

LOVES her new position.  We all knew Laura was worth way more than she was being paid, it was our

job to help her reach her potential…

What some key employers have to say about ECPI graduates :

One of the most important areas considered when anyone pursues avenues in higher education is

whether or not jobs will be available when the course studies have been completed.  One of the key

elements to running a company successfully is to be able to obtain the most qualified applicants, and

retain them as dedicated employees.  When both areas are achieved it is a win-win for all concerned.

Through the dedicated efforts of Brenda Dannenburg and the staff at ECPI, our affiliation has been

more extremely successful in satisfying the best of both worlds.  The connection enables ECPI

graduates to enter a nursing career in the home care environment and for I Am Unique to hire the

best qualified candidates.

Thank you ECPI.  We look forward to many years of a flourishing partnership.

Janet L. Campbell - I Am Unique Special Care & Case Management

Administrator

“We have worked together for nearly 10 years and hired approximately 30 graduates directly or

through contact basis.

We have been an active member of the advisory board meetings and career fairs which benefit both

ECPI and EMC2 by sharing resources and information.”

Mike Stanley, EMC2 Senior Manager of Worldwide Lab Operations Unified Storage Division
