Although a former teacher of me at the Henry van de Velde-instituut and therefore familiar with my achievements as a student, Jo Crepain (°1950-+2008) hired me in he first place because he was pretty impressed by the layout of the flyer I sent instead of the regular letter when I applied for a job at his office. It was an unmistakable sign on the wall but ...
Being stuck with little more then a black circle in the letterhead - a variation on Mies’ square - and Times New Roman for body text for so many years, he wanted to revamp the corporate identity amongst, what turned out, another handful of jobs like designing vignettes, compose portfolios, contests, presentation material and so on...
Not really that found on his architectural production that - at that time - was still suffering under the weight of postmodernistic pillars and frontons, I didn’t really mind about this job description, thus minimizing my responsibility and availability at the office and increasing my chances to focus on my main goals: establishing my own practice and taking part in as much as possible contests.
Becoming a triple father during those first years at the office, that was rapidly booming from 10 to 75 coworkers in just a couple of years, didn’t leave me with much time to work on my own ambitions.
That only changed in 2000 when my one-man team was extended with two members. This finally gave me the opportunity to apply for contests but not for to long. In 2002 Jo Crepains career became 30 years old, what needed to be celebrated with the publication of a book and a retrospective at the Design museum Gent. Two aspirations that made anothere serious attack on my freetime and it started to look like that the long awaited improvement in my pesonal time managment needed to be postponed again.
In 2005 I was done. With the book, with the exhibition and the office. Jo started to delegate more and more to his successor and I realised I could never engage myself with the same involvement to the office again. After 10 years I definitly needed to start an new chapter.

In order to minimal ize the visual presence we opted for a construct ion with a roof as a part of a s lope rais ing from the groundlevel of the garden to the two f loors high facade at the streetside. The foot of the s lope encloses the shared outdoor space of the houses. To make it even more invisble a roof garden makes the bui lding merge with fol iage of the trees. . . .The common space on groundlevel not only serves as storage room but also accomodates the col lect ive technical faci l i t ies, CHP, heat pump and al ike.

A smal l deattached house in the suburbs Antwerp with a twist.By ref lect ing the incl inat ions of the borders of the plot into the layout of the plan, the rather archetypical form of the house hides some unexpected dynamics. One result is the tradit ional Flemish approach to the house: from the back with a direct access to the kitchen and diningroom where one welcomes the guests and vis itors. It takes another turn to enter the l iv ing room with an panoramic view of the garden.

In order to preserve some qual it ies of these houses - the high cei l ings and f ireplaces - we preserved the frontside of the buiding and put new f loors in the back.
