Neyyar dam on the Western Ghats
This is a dam on the Neyyar River located at the foot of the Western Ghats. This is very popular and
scenic picnic spot. Activities around this place would include boating and yoga. This place serves as a
home to the Sivananda Yoga Ashram where courses in yoga and meditation are offered. Boats can be
hired to view the forests surrounding the reservoir. The wildlife in the forest includes wild elephants and
sambar deer. If travelling by air the nearest airport is Thiruvanthapuram International Airport and the
nearest railway station in Thiruvanthapuram railway station. One can also avail the bus service from
Thiruvanthapuram to reach the dam.
Anchuthengu: First settlement of East India Company
This place 40 km to the north of Trivandrum city is of historic importance. The first settlement of the
East India Company was established here. The place still holds the remains of the English fort. Local
attraction would be churches built by St. Francis Xavier and a boat club. Also there are boats to sail
across the river Veli.
Meenmutti and Kombaikani Waterfalls
The Neyyar reservoir has two waterfalls named as Meenmutti and Kombaikani. Located at a distance of
2km both can be reached by a trek through the dense forests. Permission to visit the falls should be
availed from the forest department and a guide will be sent along to visit the falls.
Sarkaradevi Temple
Located to the north west of Thiruvanthapuram district, the main deity of this temple is Bhadarkali. This
is one of the most important temples due to the famous kaliyoot festival which is celebrated in the
month of March. It is a 9 day long festival where during the first 7 day story visualizations of the war
between Darika and Bhadrakali are enacted. The story goes as on the 8th day Bhadrakali goes in search
of Darika but returns empty handed. This is celebrated as ‘Mudi uzhichil’ where the blessing of the deity
is offered to the devotees directly. On the 9th day ‘Nilathil poru’ is celebrated where as per the story
demon Darika is killed by Bhadrakali. These ceremonies bring lots of people to this temple as they are a
visual treat.
Thiruvanthapuram city
The city has whole has lot tourist places to visit. The Sree Padmanabha Swami temple attracts a lot of
people after it made the news about its wealth. No one is allowed to wear pants inside the temple so
make sure you either wear a dhoti or pavadai to the temple. Also similar to Tirupathi cell phone and
camera is not allowed inside the temple. The place is very calm with a cool breeze that you can feel all
the pressure and tension ebbing away. The other attractions in Thiruvanthapuram would include
museums, zoos and beaches. Sree Chitra Art gallery has a section with a collection of Ravi Varma
paintings. One can also visit the palace in the old capital of Travancore, Padmanabhapuram is located
towards Kanyakumari.
