GÁNOVCE
The area of Poprad has been populated since the prehistoric ages. Among the evidence of this settlement is a brain fossil of a Neanderthal man, found in the nearby village of Gánovce.
VANDALS
In ancient times, the area was populated by the germanic Vandal tribes.
THE NAME
The oldest document mentioning Poprad dates to the year 1256
in medieval times Poprad has been colonised by german settlers.
During this period it was called Popradzaza or later Deutschendorf
MINES
In the 15th century and later, iron, copper and silver were all exploited
By the end of the 18th century over 500 iron mines were operative

1908- powerhouse and cannery
1913- Self Help association
RAILWAYS
The principal driving force of the dynamic development of the town was finally the Košice-Bohumín railway track built in 1871.
