new faces there to compete.
The time of year is also fast
approaching for foaling sea-
son to start again. I wish
everyone luck and good
health with their foals due,
and look forward to hearing
about and seeing our newest
Pintos on the ground. Please
remember to send in your
foal pictures and descrip-
tions so they can be added to
our foal gallery on our web

Welcome to our new mem-
bers! I look forward to
meeting you around the
show circuit so please come
and introduce yourself.
Also, if you have any thing
you would like to chat about
please don’t hesitate to give
me a call on 0439 110 198.
It was lovely to see so many
outstanding Pinto exhibits
presented at Sydney Royal
Easter Show. The condi-
tions weren’t the best, but
our Pinto members turned
out a splendid display of
horses. In June both I and
Michele Robson will be
attending the RAS meeting
to see if we can have new
classes added while still
keeping our existing ones.
We will also be asking for
our Pinto classes to be
scheduled more closely to
the Mini Horses, Mini Po-
nies, and Shetlands to allow
our members to compete
across a broader range of
breeds with their Pintos.
For the upcoming 2011
Pinto State Titles we will
again be having interstate
judges as the feedback we
received from our members
was that the choice of judges
was very successful.
I would like to thank those
who attended our AGM in
April, and to also congratu-
late those who won and were
presented awards for their
great achievements. I hope
you were pleased with your
prizes.
Our Association is currently
in a good financial position,
which I must thank our tire-
less, hard working commit-
tee and the many members
who volunteer their time.
Don’t forget our Winter
Woollies show is coming up
at the beginning of July,
which should be a very big
show leading into the up-
coming show season. I hope
to see all those foals and

Depending on where you live, your equine companions may have to tough it through
harsh conditions in the winter months. Most horses, no matter what age, entering into
the winter season in good condition will do fine on the same routine with only minor
changes. But what about the geriatric horse? It is important to realize the difference
between old and geriatric. If the aged horse is in good body condition, healthy and ac-
tive even at 20+ years, he is simply just an older horse, and it may not be necessary to
make any special preparations for winter. However, as horses enter their senior years
arthritis, dental abnormalities, weight loss and endocrine dysfunction are a few condi-
tions that may classify the aged horse as geriatric. Wintering the geriatric horse is
somewhat more challenging, but can be successfully accomplished.
As with human athletes, years of stress, injuries and general wear and tear can result in
painful and crippling arthritic changes in older horses. Also as with humans, the cold,
damp conditions of winter make arthritis pain even worse. With the proper manage-
ment you can help. Do not keep your horse confined to a stall unless recommended by
your veterinarian for medical purposes. Ideally there should be free access to turnout,
but good shelter from the elements should also be available. The more the horse has an
opportunity for exercise the better. It is not uncommon for the arthritic horse to become
reluctant to lie down due to difficulty in getting back up. Be sure to use enough bedding
in his stall if you do need to bring him in. Not only will bedding provide warmth, but it
will also provide cushion for elbows and hocks, prime spots for abrasions to occur if
the horse struggles to get up or is down for prolonged periods of time. If his stall floor
is covered with rubber matting and the straw or shavings are wet, this can be a very
slippery surface. Blanketing may also be needed in the more severe winter climates.
Proper fit is essential when blanketing any horse. If using a turnout rug, be sure the ma-
terial is water resistant and breathable. Blankets should only be used if someone is
available to check them at least twice a day.
Older horses are more sensitive to severe weather, be it heat or cold, and often suffer
weight loss when temperature fluctuations are extreme. Higher energy needs in winter
can be met by increasing feed in a more highly digestible form such as pelleted or ex-
truded feeds designed specifically for old horses. Impaction problems can be reduced
by insuring free access to clean, fresh, unfrozen water in the winter. Just breaking the
ice in the tank will not be enough. There are several devices available to help keep wa-
ter buckets and stock tanks from freezing and at more optimal temperatures for drink-
ing. If your horse does not drink well, feed water soaked feeds (1-2 gallons of water per
feeding) to help increase fluid intake. Poor dentition can result in the inability to ade-
quately chew hay or feed. The geriatric horse should have its teeth checked by an ex-
perienced equine dentist at least every six months. If the horse has dental problems that
are not correctable (missing teeth, severe wave mouth) it will benefit from a diet of
"soups" of soaked hay cubes or beet pulp plus pelleted or extruded feeds offered at least
twice a day. Soaked feeds can easily freeze in the winter so only offer amounts that can
be consumed in a single meal. Rely on the advice of your veterinarian or nutritionist for
the proper recipe for your horse.
Remember, weight loss can certainly be due to many other conditions. If vaccination,
deworming and dental care schedules are up-to-date and your aged horse is still not
maintaining weight, have your veterinarian perform lab work to check for metabolic
disorders, malabsorption, and liver and kidney dysfunctions.
Summary
Geriatric horses can live for years comfortably. The winter season, however, provides
an extra challenge. Adequate shelter, good footing with the ability to exercise freely,
free access to fresh, unfrozen water, good quality hay and feed are all necessary for
geriatric horses to survive the elements of winter weather.

PINK RIDE PINK RIDE –– 2 APRIL 20112 APRIL 2011 Raising funds for the National Breast Cancer Raising funds for the National Breast Cancer
FoundationFoundation By Melanie MossBy Melanie Moss
The Pink Ride was a fund raising venture organised by the Australian Stockmans
Hall of Fame with all profit going to the National Breast Cancer Foundation
(NBCF), who provide funding for research on prevention and cure for breast cancer. This event had previ-
ously been held in Longreach, QLD and Clare Valley, SA in 2010. I had previously heard about it from the
program Landline and was keen to attend when it finally made it to NSW. I think that even the organisers
were surprised with the attendance with more than 380 riders from across New South Wales and beyond
saddled up at the Bong Bong Race Course, Bowral to raise $11,470 for the NBCF. This was the largest re-
corded number of participants for any “Pink” ride held in Australia.
I was particularly keen to attend this ride having been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2007 at the age of
27. This was a great opportunity for me to give something back by doing something that I love the most,
being riding my horses. My two “babies” were a lifeline for me during an incredibly difficult period in my life
and brought me a lot of joy and comfort at this time. And as 1 in 9 women will be diagnosed with breast
cancer by the age of 85, chances are you all know someone that has personally been affected by breast
cancer.
I have been a pinto member on and off for 20 years, having purchased my first tobiano mare when I was
11 years old, who is still going strong to this day. I was lucky enough to breed from her, and now actively
show her two grandsons, Monty (SP Coloured Exposure) and Busta (SP Full Throttle).
Monty was a little disturbed at being spray painted pink but soon settled in to the spirit of things. There was
lots of spray painting going on with other people as well, and two large grey horses were dyed pink entirely
for the event and they won the “most pinked” award. People also dressed up in as much pink that they
could find in their wardrobe, which led to some crazy outfits on the day.
Most of the horses were well behaved as a lot of them would not have been in the vicinity of that many
horses before, or pink feather boa’s which were a popular accessory. Just about every breed was repre-
sented from Shire’s to Shetlands, but it was nice to see a large representation of Pintos and Pinto Members!
We really do stand out in a crowd.

The course started with a turn around Bong Bong Race Track (unfortunately we were held at a walk-
ing pace because that could have been heaps of fun) and then on through some absolutely spec-
tacular private property. We had bridge crossings, creek crossings, boggy sections and beautiful
views. We stopped for a camp-oven cooked lunch, then back on the horses to head back to the
race track where we lined up for an aerial shot with all of us in the “pink ribbon” formation.
I would like to thank the Pinto Association for their very generous donation of $100. In total I raised
$3,580 for the NBCF which was by far the most amount of money raised by an individual and got an
honourable mention at the evening dinner and entertainment.
Next year I would like to see more pinto members, and perhaps we can do some fundraising on be-
half of the Pinto Association.

Vice Presidents Report—Marg Madden Hi Everyone,
Here we are in winter, the show season is all but over and most are having a rest, leaving
our horses and ponies out to ―be a horse‖ for a few months prior to the beginning of the
next season (even though they are still under layers of rugs). Don’t forget that we have our
―Winter Woollies‖ show at Luddenham on 3rd July, 2011 this is a great opportunity to get
your young stock out before the foal show, or just to go out and have a bit of fun with your
winter woolly pony. Those of you who will not be showing may like to come and give a
hand, we are always looking for helpers.
Thank you to all who made the effort to come to the AGM, some coming down from near
Newcastle. After all, your views, ideas and general- input assist us in running your society.
Your next newsletter will contain the programme for the state show, which will be held on
18th 19th and 20th November at Horseworld.
As a direct result of feedback from members, the miniature pintos will once again have a
separate ring with their own supreme. There will also be changes to other rings and the
rules and regulations will be ―tightened up‖. If you have any ideas for the state show,
please contact us at [email protected] we still have a little time before the pro-
gramme goes out.
Congratulations to the winners and placegetters at Sydney Royal, once again the standard
of entries was excellent, with each and every exhibit presented beautifully, well done all.
The Pinto Horse Association of NSW inc. is now insured under the AHSA affiliate Club
insurance scheme. This scheme also offers members the opportunity to obtain personal
