By Elaine Storey
With the recent announcement about theclosure of our only grocery store, weve allheard our share of disparaging comments.
And in some cases we may have used a few
superlatives ourselves in describing thefrustration we all feel in the wake of theformal statement.
After being an anchor in the Fraser Lakeshopping centre for decades,Super Valu will be closing itsdoors on June 18th.
Their parent company, LobLawsannounced last July they wereclosing 52 of their unprofitablestores across Canada and Fraser
Lake was targeted as an undera-chieving store.
With one month notice, theycalled local store manager SylviaHendriksen and said not to or-der more stock and to let theinventory run out. They weredispatching trucks to recovertheir equipment and she was encouraged tosell everything off in the interim.
Despite closing stores, Loblaws has an-
nounced in their recent quarterly reportthey are building 50 new stores and reno-vating 150 others at a cost of $1 billion.
They operate 2,300 retail outlets and cur-rently employ 192,000 full and part-timeworkers across Canada.
We continue to invest in our business in
ways that matter for the Canadian economyand the millions of Canadians who shopwith us each week, said Galen G Weston
the companys president and executivechairman in his statement in April 2016.
Loblaws are the biggest grocery chain inCanada, agreed Cameron Olma, owner ofthe Fraser Lake Shopping Center. But, we
are disappointed in our tenant, he said ofthis huge company.
Said Olma, We take pride in our invest-ment here, and feel we owe it to the com-munity to provide a food store.
Since hearing of the upcoming closure,Olma has been making calls of everyone inthe industry to find a solution. Well do
what needs to be done. Whatever it takesto get a food store back in there.
Fourteen people will directly loose theirjobs with this closure and its yet to be de-termined if the trickle-down effect willresult in more job loss in the community.
Perhaps the person who cleaned the floorswill be left without work. Any independentfood distributor who supplied pop andchips and ice will notice a decrease in sales.
A bookkeeper might be effected .Andfamilies of them as well.
The loss of the grocery store could be aGame Changer. This is a real reason toconsider moving on.
BUT..
There remains a very positive and optimis-tic outlook amongst many of the retailmembers of the community.
Rob King at Ace Hardwarehas just completed a huge ex-pansion and now offers amuch wider variety of stockbeyond building supplies andnails and boards.
A new business JUST openedin the shopping center in earlyMay. Lash n Nail, which of-fers a cute spot to have yournails painted and your hairtrimmed.
These are all entrepreneurswith a vision and a positive
frame of mind.
And, if the people in the know, KNOWwhat they profess to KNOW, a solutionwill surely be forthcoming.
While some can only dwell on the hardshipcreated by this closure . Others see it asan opportunity.
And until it all gets sorted out, We aregoing to be challenged for awhile, admitsMarilynn Reyden newly elected Chamberof Commerce President. Adding, FraserLake will never die, but the face of it willchange. In the interim

This, claims a senior over seventy who started her life here, Is the first time we will be without a place to buy ourgroceries. For many years there were two stores that seemed to do very well here. The first grocery store was started here pre1923. And before that there was a trading post.
We are disappointed that Loblaws would do this. But, were working with the mall owner, said Mayor Dwayne Lindstrom.
Council cant fix it. But we can keep the rumours to a standstill. We welcome positive suggestions, added Lindstrom.
While rumours run amok, and everyone has their version on who will be taking over the store and how it all will be done, concreteplans are in the works by someone who is a new resident to Fraser Lake.
And if you have seen the work already tackled around the hotel, you would have little doubt it could happen.
The Fraser Lake hotel owner Paul Dhaliwal, has great plans for his property. Although he has only been here a few months, he hasput $125,000 into a new roof and another $15,000 into new water lines. The grease traps had been left for years and not cleaned,he said, I fixed it by putting in all news lines.
About the closure of Super Valu, Paul says, I want to give people all the services they need. Once my crew get here, we plan toget the restaurant open by July 1st, pending inspections.
Along with plans to open the restaurant and the 25 rooms upstairs in the hotel, Paul is planning to open a convenience store in theold bar area in the hotel.
The pub business isn't as important right now as a grocery store. We have lots of plans.
Along with the project plans, Paul is happy to give any former Super Valu employees a job in his new store.
We have work to do, and it will go fast. I know people are worried about where they are going to get their groceries, thatswhy Iwant to get up and running quickly.
Some local seniors wrote some of their thoughts about the Super Valu closure:
...It will no doubt result in other retail outlets closing.
...I am 88 years old and have been in Fraser Lake 50 years, and this is the worst thing that has happened to me.
...it will be bad enough not having a grocery store in the summer but it will be even worse having to drive on the winter roads tobuy our groceries. Property values will plummet.
...I have lived in Fraser Lake for 50 years. It is a great community, but it cant survive without a grocery store!!
...The lack of a grocery store will impact our community greatly. Lower property values will cause fewer people to movehere...less travellers will stop, lowering the income of the other stores and impact future considerations by all levels of governmentfor grants and help in expanding our community.

Several members of the Fraser Lake Seniors Sports Group at-tended the Carpet Bowlers Association of BC provincialplayoffs in Telkwa in March.
Dave & Carol Harper and John Thiessen won all seven of theirgames to take a gold medal in pairs, and Fran Armatage, AnnaCarter & Shirley Mann with Florence Stewart as spare took abronze medal in Threes.
We have a very large group in small-town-standards, saidDave Harper. We have an average of 16-19 bowlers who par-ticipate every week. Its not costly to play and everyone puts ina dollar twice a week. Many clubs like Prince Rupert havehalf the number of players that we do.
Carpet Bowling is every Monday & Thursday 1pm to 3pm at the FL Legion. There has been an active carpet bowling club here forover 30 years Or that would be my guess, says Beth Woolsey who has played for much of that time. The club owns three 30 x 6foot carpets and 16 bowls for each.
Its lots of fun and gaining in popularity amongst retirees. The great thing about it, its played inside so can be played allyear round.

Designing and selling from a home studioBy Elaine Storey
When youre an artisan, much joy is de-
rived from designing your product. Youobserve leaves dancing or water rippling, children laughing and you envision yournext piece
And whether its glass or clay or ink oracrylics you are the master of the finalproduct. You are the idea team the draftperson design squad and themerchandising entrepreneur all rolled upin one. And with your artistically-designed-giftware in hand, its yours alone to show-
case and sell to the masses. And while each piece is unique and origi-nal, your artistic skills are put to the testwhen it comes to marketing, promotionand sales.
Local glass and mixed media artisan Mari-lynn Reyden finds this only too true.
I love for people to stop by my studio,
browse around my gallery and ask ques-tions. Yet I see little foot traffic through
here, says Reyden. The newly elected Chamber of Commercepresident is actively searching for answersto small-town neighbourhood retailing.
Reyden applied for highway signage thatread ARTISAN but those signs are grand-fathered and no longer available.
She has asked at all levels of governmentprovincial, regional and local and remainsunable to crack the signage problem thatcould direct traffic to her studio.
My goal is to share. To let people knowwhat Signature Creations is all about. IWant them to check out the gallery, seethe studio and hey, leave their wallets athome, says Reyden.
Just because you browse around I dontwant people to feel obligated to buy some-thing.
While her gallery is full of functional andartistic glass and giftware and jewellery,
Reyden is more than happy just to show itoff and talk about the process.

May 4, 2016 and the Saskatoons are in full bloom! Other years I remember using the blooms on July 1st parade floats! Wonder if the frost willget the blooms? Hope not!
****
One of my wonderful grandsons made the trip from McBride to help me get the bulls organized for shipping as well as getting machinerywashed etc for the auction sale. Thanks so much Clinton, you are GREAT! Daughter Debbie, husband John, son Bruce & friend Dean have
been working like mad to get ready for the auction sale as well as three fellows from Sekura Auctions. Many thanks to all of you!Trying to decide what and what not to put in the sale is quite a job! Will be cleaning out the saddle shed next I guess...LOTS of great memoriesconnected with that little building and its contents! The shop is nearly cleared out...found lots of antiques that I'd forgotten we had...one thingabout it it is very interesting getting things sorted!
****Daughter Debbie & I went down to Marcel & Irene Muellers to see their baby goats...Now, they are without a doubt the cutest little monkey's Ihave seen in a long time! They all run and chase each other up and over rock piles and jump & twirl around, they are adorable...too bad theygrow up to be goats! LOL
****Have been to the Endako Pub for some VERY GOOD meals lately, sure wonderful to have a nice respectable place to go for fine d in-
ning! Thank you Dave & Rose for the special treat....now if we can just get a meal of "NEWFE FRIES" we will be happy! Mandy keeps prom-ising them! (Hope your tooth quits aching real soon Mandy!)
****Had some friends from Vernon stop in for a very enjoyable visit, fun to talk over old times!
****Our sympathy goes out to Dave & Rose Simard on the loss of Dave's Mother. May she rest in peace.
****Got two interesting calls today, both messages as I was not in to take the calls. One "Chief Ryan Smith" from Canada Revenue left a long spielthat I must NOT ignore this call etc etc and if I don't contact him immediately I had better contact my lawyer! Well, I really didn't think thatsomeone with an accent like he had would be called "Ryan Smith! LOL!!" But just to be sure I called my accountant and she said there aremany, many such calls taking place and to just ignore them. And, above all, do NOT SEND MONEY! Too darn bad these idiots wouldn't puttheir time, effort & brains to better use!
****Went to McBride for the long weekend. It was my oldest sister's sixty-seventh wedding anniversary. Her husbands 90th birthday, their oldestson's 60th birthday and a grandson's 30th birthday as well as some others also celebrating special events. It was a great time, saw lots of people Ihadn't seen in years!
****Bought a lovely house on an acre & a quarter of land, all on one floor, has town water & sewer and is on the edge of town. Very beautifulneighbourhood with few neighbours and the town cemetery right across the street...so it is bound to be quiet! LOL!! Another adventure aboutto take place in my life...just wish Walter was here to take part in it!
Be nice if we could get a few days of rain, sure dry! Have a jollygood summer everyone!
