Garland Junior School Curriculum Overview
The National Curriculum:
The National Curriculum outlines the programmes of study in maintained/state primary and secondary schools in England.
It sets out what children should learn in Key Stages 1 and 2.
The content within the National Curriculum:
The National Curriculum identifies what to teach but not how to teach.
In primary schools, it consists of eleven subject areas plus Religious Education.
English, Maths and Science are the three core subject areas, with detailed programmes of study.
From September 2014, it is compulsory for children to follow the new National Curriculum.
To read the National Curriculum document published by the Department for Education, click on this link: The National
Curriculum in England: Key Stage 1 and 2 Framework Document.
For more information, visit the Department for Education webpage
The Garland Junior School Curriculum:
The staff at Garland Junior School have been working very hard to produce a curriculum which not only meets, but enhances the
requirements of the new National Curriculum, which started in September 2014. The curriculum at Garland Junior School is structured
around a key text which is studied in English lessons and used to enhance the whole curriculum.
This document maps the curriculum and shows the coverage in each year group. Each subject will be covered during the course of the year
but may not be taught on a weekly basis. Instead, the subjects will be taught when most appropriate to fit with the History topic being
studied or the text being read in English.
