Although it can be tempting for a runner to start out with thegoal to run a marathon, starting out with just a half marathonis the most intelligent way to enter into the sport ofcompetitive running. A marathon is a grueling display of will, determination, and overall strength no matter the skill of therunner running the race. The distance alone is enough topsychologically beat a runner into a very slow finishing time;it is important to gradually build up to that distance bytesting the waters every couple of miles. How well a runnerhandles a half marathon is a good indication of how well heor she will handle double that distance. Although mosttraining programs will bring a runner close to that long of adistance, being surrounded by other competitors an make allthe difference.
