Pin Point Overview
4
What is Pin Point?• A website providing a query engine for researching parts in the Federal
supply chain– Provides advanced parametric searching on physical and logistic part
properties– Allows user to quickly locate groups of similar parts for possible substitution,
sustainment engineering studies, and long term contracting• A User Interface to the Coherent View database. The Coherent View:
– aggregates part data from over 20 DOD databases, DOD EMALL and GSA Advantage electronic part portals, and commercial and manufacturer websites
– uses advanced Artificial Intelligence technology to structure part properties from unstructured narrative text, specifications, part numbers, and product descriptions

NSN information lookup
Text boxes with circle icons have autocompletionStart typingNSN in textbox
Matching NSNappear in dropdown list
Choose desired NSN from list
11
NSN Information Lookup
Alternately you can click on the lookup icon …
…and a separate window pops up that offersadditional NSN lookup options
12
NSN information lookup
Once an NSN is entered in thetext box click the Search button to get informationfor that NSN
13
NSN information lookup
Sidebar shows differentviews of informationavailable for NSN Grayedout items have no informationavailable
Initial view displayed is thebasic Info view
14
CAGE information lookup
Cage to lookup can be entered in textbox withautocompletefunction
15
CAGE information lookup
Alternately you can click on the lookup icon …
…and a separate window pops up that offersadditional CAGE lookup options
16
Cage Information lookup
Once a CAGE is entered in thetext box click the Search button to get information for that CAGE

Initial view displayed is thebasic Info view
18
CAGE Information Lookup
Looking up a brand name in the CAGElookup window…
… will match to the CAGE that supplies that brand
19
Part Number Information Lookup
You start a part number search by typing thefull or partial part number you are looking forin the text box using the * as a wildcard
Holding the mouse over The question mark icon …
20
Part Number Information Lookup
… Brings up rules for usingwildcards
21
Once a Part Number pattern is entered in thetext box click the Search button to get informationfor matches to that Part Number pattern. ThisPattern finds all part numbers starting with MS14303

Initial view displayed is thebasic Info view
23
Part Number information lookup
Selecting specific part numbersand clicking the compare button …
24
Part Number information lookup
…And you get a side by side comparison of the parts by attributes
25
Parametric Searching
26
Parametric Searching can be used to:
• Find part similar to an NSN– Example 1 - Bearing NSN
• Find parts with common attributes– Example 2 – O-Ring Attributes
• Group parts based on physical and logistic properties– Example 3 – Material Problem
27
Example 1 – Bearing NSN
28
Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1
This is the results of a search on NSN 3110-00-184-0039, an AnnularBall Bearing. No referenced sourceis a purchasable item
Clicking the Find Similar button willinitiate a parametric search based on theknown attributes of this NSN
29
Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1
A parametric search query is filledout with all the known attributes ofThis NSN
30
Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1
The results of this query only returnthe one NSN
31
Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1
We modify the search by removing non-essential attributes including thereference to MIL-G-18709, an olderlower performance grease specification
32
Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1
Now 3 NSNs are returned that matchthese properties
33
Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1
We can select these NSNs and compare themside by side by clicking the Compare button
34
Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1
35
Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1
If we modify the query byremoving the StandardTolerance Designation,(ABEC 1 is minimal)…
36
Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1
Now ten NSNs are returned
37
Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1
The 10 NSNs can be compared side by side
38
Parametric Search – Find similar parts – Example 1
Holding the mouse over the Context Icon next toa property value pops up a window showing where that value was found or inferred
39
Example 2 – O-Ring Attributes
40
Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes
A parametric search based on productcharacteristics can also be started by clicking on “with INC/FSC/FSG filters” or “without filters”
We will start the nextsearch with an INC filter
41
Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes
You can choose one or moreINC, FSC, or FSG filters to limityour search. We will limit the nextsearch to a single INC
42
Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes
We enter the INC for O-Ring by startingto type O-Ring then choosing thecorrect INC from the autocompletedrop down list
43
Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes
We are presented with a listof O-Ring characteristicsfrom which we can selectto build a parametric search query
44
Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes
We enter the characteristicvalues we are looking forand click the Submit Querybutton
45
Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes
We find 2 NSNs and 74commercial part numbers thatmatch the query characteristics
Looking at AAC, AMC, AMSC, and CriticalityCodes for the NSNs, we see one is purchasedthrough open competition at a cost of $0.25 andthe other is purchased from a single source atat a cost of $3.98. The AMSC code of H forthis NSN means the Government does not haveenough information about the part to purchasefrom other sources
46
Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes
Comparing the NSNs side by side and looking at thecontext for Cross-Sectional Height for the sole sourceNSN, we see that FLIS technical characteristics onlyhas one critical dimension and the material as syntheticrubber
47
Parametric Search – Find parts with common attributes – O-Ring Attributes
The other critical dimension and the Fluorocarbon material all comefrom the Caterpillar part number reference number for the NSN. There is a link to the Caterpillar website to verify this
48
Example 3 – Material Problem
49
Click on product characteristics search without filters
Parametric Search – Grouping Parts – Material Problem
50
Choose material and click on lookup icon
Parametric Search – Grouping Parts – Material Problem
51
Titanium can be chosenfrom the Material Taxonomy

52
Parametric Search – Grouping Parts – Material Problem
Use Manufacturing Processtaxonomy lookup to chooseForging
53
Select WSDC and choose WSDCfor EA-6B aircraft
Click on Submit Query

55
Parametric Search – Setting Matching Rules
56
Parametric Search – setting rules for matching properties
When working with a specificINC, you can set up special rulesfor matching property values. All Pin Point users can viewthese rules. Editing the rulesrequires a user account withspecial permissions. CAClogin will not let you edit rules
57
Parametric Search – setting rules for matching properties
Rules for INC 47946O-RINGS. Rules canbe set for different types of numerictolerances and valueequvalencies.
58
